Why Is My ChatGPT Not Working on Mac? Fixes for 2026

ChatGPT not working on your Mac? Check OpenAI's status page, then fix the Mac app, Safari or Chrome, sign-in loops, VPN errors and slow replies.

The Merlin team11 min read

When ChatGPT stops working on a Mac, check OpenAI's status page first. If it shows no incident, open chatgpt.com in Safari or Chrome to see whether the fault is the ChatGPT Mac app or your account. Then quit and reopen the app, update it and macOS, clear chatgpt.com's site data, and test without your VPN.

I had a client proposal half-written in ChatGPT when the reply froze mid-sentence and the little spinner just kept going. I was one click from deleting the app and starting over. It turned out OpenAI was having a bad hour, and nothing on my Mac needed touching. That's why this guide starts with the five-second checks, then works through the ChatGPT Mac app, ChatGPT in Safari and Chrome, sign-in problems, network errors and slow replies, in the order that wastes the least of your time.

Is ChatGPT down right now?

OpenAI posts outages on status.openai.com, so look there before you change anything on your Mac. The page splits ChatGPT into separate parts, including Conversations, Login, Voice mode, File uploads, ChatGPT Work and Codex in ChatGPT Desktop. That matters: voice can be broken while typed chat works fine, and a login incident looks exactly like a problem with your password.

Two habits make the page more useful. Click Subscribe to updates if you rely on ChatGPT for work, so the next incident reaches you before you start troubleshooting. And read the small print: OpenAI notes that its availability figures are averaged across all tiers, models and error types, so a green page doesn't guarantee your own account is fine. If the page is green and only you are stuck, the problem is probably on your side, and the fixes below are where to look.

Mac app, browser or account? A 30-second test

The quickest way to find the fault is to try ChatGPT somewhere else on the same Mac. Open a private window in Safari (File > New Private Window, per Apple's guide) or an Incognito window in Chrome (Command-Shift-N, per Google's shortcut list), go to chatgpt.com and sign in. A private window skips your saved cookies, and Apple says Safari turns off extensions that need website access in private windows on macOS Sonoma and later, so it rules out two common causes at once.

Fixing the ChatGPT Mac app

Most ChatGPT Mac app problems come down to an app that needs a clean restart, an old version, an unsupported macOS or a missing permission. Try them from the top, and test ChatGPT again after each.

Fix 1: Quit ChatGPT properly, or force quit it

Clicking the red close button leaves ChatGPT running in the background. To really restart it, bring ChatGPT to the front, use Command-Q, then reopen it. If the app won't respond, use Apple's force quit steps:

  1. Press Option-Command-Esc.
  2. Select ChatGPT (or ChatGPT Classic) in the Force Quit window.
  3. Click Force Quit, wait a few seconds, then open the app again.

Fix 2: Know which ChatGPT app you have, then update it

Since July 9, 2026, there are two ChatGPT apps for the Mac. OpenAI's download page says the new ChatGPT desktop app combines Chat, Work and Codex, and the previous Mac app was renamed ChatGPT Classic and is still supported. If your Dock icon now says ChatGPT Classic, nothing is broken; it's the old app under a new name.

To update, open the app and choose Check for Updates from its menu, which is the step OpenAI's Work and Codex article gives. One catch: the Apple blog Daring Fireball reported that Check for Updates in ChatGPT Classic only brings Classic up to date. If you want the new app, download it from chatgpt.com/download, which picks the right installer for Apple silicon or Intel.

If the new app looks wrong rather than broken, it may simply be laid out differently. OpenAI's move guide says Chat and Work conversations now share one Recents list, your projects sit under Projects, and Codex keeps its own separate history. A chat that seems to have vanished is often just in Recents.

Fix 3: Check your macOS version

OpenAI's system requirements for the ChatGPT Mac app are macOS 14 Sonoma or later, on Apple silicon (M1 or newer) or an Intel processor, and OpenAI says it won't release a version for older systems. Check yours under Apple menu > About This Mac. Updates live in Apple menu > System Settings > General > Software Update, as Apple describes. If your Mac can't run macOS 14, use ChatGPT at chatgpt.com in your browser instead.

Fix 4: Check the macOS permissions ChatGPT needs

A missing macOS permission makes a ChatGPT feature fail quietly, with no error. Open Apple menu > System Settings > Privacy & Security and look at these two:

  • Accessibility: OpenAI's Work with Apps guide says ChatGPT needs Accessibility access to work with most compatible apps, and turning it off disables the feature for them. Turn ChatGPT on in the list, or add it with the + button, as Apple explains.
  • Microphone: voice conversations need ChatGPT switched on under Microphone. Apple notes that if you turned access off, macOS asks again the next time the app tries to use the microphone.

When ChatGPT stopped seeing the document I had open, the Accessibility switch for ChatGPT was off. Turning it back on and restarting the app fixed it. If Option-Space no longer opens the ChatGPT chat bar, look at the shortcut in the app's settings. OpenAI says Option-Space is the default and you can change it, which helps when another app uses the same keys.

Fix 5: Reinstall the ChatGPT app

Reinstalling gives you a clean copy of the app. First open chatgpt.com in your browser and confirm your chats are there, so you know they live in your account and not only on this Mac. Then follow Apple's uninstall steps: quit ChatGPT, drag it from the Applications folder to the Trash, empty the Trash, and install the current version from chatgpt.com/download. When it asks you to log in, pick the method you originally used.

Fixing ChatGPT in Safari or Chrome on a Mac

When ChatGPT works in a private window but not in your normal one, stored site data or an extension is the likely culprit. Start with a hard refresh, then clear chatgpt.com's data, then look at extensions.

Hard refresh, the Mac way

OpenAI's error guide suggests a hard refresh with Command-Shift-R for blank screens and replies that never finish. In Chrome that works: Google lists Command-Shift-R as "reload, ignoring cached content." In Safari it doesn't. Apple's Safari shortcuts assign Shift-Command-R to opening Reader. The first time I tried OpenAI's shortcut in Safari, the page simply turned into Reader view, which is a confusing moment when you're already trying to fix something. In Safari, press Command-R to reload, and if that isn't enough, clear the site data below.

Clear chatgpt.com's site data

Removing one site's data signs you out of that site and resets its stored settings, without touching every other site you use. In Safari, per Apple's steps:

  1. Open Safari > Settings and select the Privacy tab.
  2. Click Manage Website Data.
  3. Find chatgpt.com and openai.com in the list, select them, and click Remove.
  4. Quit Safari, reopen it, and sign in to chatgpt.com again.

In Chrome, go to Chrome > Settings > Privacy and security > Third-party cookies > See all site data and permissions, search for chatgpt.com, and click the trash icon next to it, as Google describes. Do the same for openai.com, since sign-in runs through auth.openai.com.

Find the extension that breaks ChatGPT

Ad blockers, script blockers and privacy tools are the usual suspects, and OpenAI's sign-in guide says cookies and JavaScript must be allowed for chatgpt.com, openai.com and auth.openai.com. In Safari, choose Safari > Settings > Extensions and clear the checkbox next to each one, per Apple. In Chrome, go to Chrome > Settings > Extensions. Switch them back on one by one until ChatGPT breaks again, and you've found the culprit.

Network errors, VPNs and iCloud Private Relay

"A network error occurred" means your Mac can't hold a steady connection to OpenAI's servers, according to OpenAI's error guide. Its suggested fixes are to turn off VPNs, proxies and security filters, try another browser, and switch networks. The same steps help with "unusual activity" warnings, which OpenAI says can come from traffic routed through flagged IP addresses.

I keep a VPN on when I work from hotel Wi-Fi, so that's the first thing I switch off when ChatGPT throws a network error. On a Mac there's a second relay many people forget: iCloud Private Relay, Apple's own relay for Safari browsing. To test without it, go to System Settings, click your name, then iCloud > Private Relay, and choose Turn Off Until Tomorrow, per Apple. It switches itself back on within 24 hours.

On a work Mac or office network, don't start disabling security software yourself. Send IT OpenAI's network recommendations, which list the domains to allow (including *.chatgpt.com, *.openai.com, *.oaistatic.com and *.oaiusercontent.com) and say WebSocket traffic to wss://ws.chatgpt.com must be allowed on port 443. When WebSockets are blocked, OpenAI says some features can stall, disconnect or stop streaming. For file uploads that fail with a network banner, the page suggests allowing *.oaiusercontent.com, and voice uses UDP port 3478.

Why can't I log in to ChatGPT on my Mac?

A common cause of ChatGPT sign-in failures is using a different sign-in method from the one you signed up with. OpenAI's login guide says to pick the same option every time: Google, Microsoft, Apple or email. One Mac-specific trap: if you signed up with Sign in with Apple and chose Hide My Email, your account uses a relay address, and typing your real email can trigger errors such as "Wrong authentication method."

The same guide covers the other common messages:

  • "Checking your browser…" on a loop: pause your VPN or proxy and refresh. On a company network, IT may need to allow the check.
  • "We have detected suspicious login behavior": clear cookies, pause your VPN, try another network, and wait up to an hour, because repeated failed attempts can trigger a temporary block.
  • "Something went wrong" or "Oops": wait at least 60 seconds, check the status page, then try a private window.
  • No verification code: check spam, use only the newest code, and mark noreply@openai.com as a safe sender.

If you see a security alert about your account, OpenAI recommends changing your password, turning on two-factor authentication and logging out of all devices.

ChatGPT slow or stuck on "Thinking"

A slow ChatGPT is often working as designed rather than broken. OpenAI explains that reasoning models and tool use take longer, and that peak hours slow things down. When a reply stalls, the error guide says to wait 30 to 60 seconds, click Stop generating, then Regenerate, or start a new chat.

Long conversations are a quieter cause. I used to keep one giant chat per project, and it got sluggish well before it got useless. Now I start a fresh chat for each new task and paste in only the context it needs. OpenAI also suggests switching models to see whether the problem follows one model or your whole account, and closing other heavy tabs and apps.

A usage limit isn't a bug

If ChatGPT says you've reached a limit, the app is fine. OpenAI's Free tier FAQ says features such as image creation, file uploads and voice have their own caps, access returns at the reset time shown in the app, and upgrading to a paid plan resets the limit.

When to contact OpenAI support

Contact OpenAI Support from help.openai.com once the status page is clear and the fixes above haven't worked. OpenAI's guides ask for details that make a ticket quick to solve, so gather them first:

  • The email address on your ChatGPT account and how you sign in.
  • Your macOS version, the app name (ChatGPT or ChatGPT Classic) and its version number.
  • The exact error text, a screenshot, and the time it happened with your time zone.
  • Whether you use a VPN, proxy or iCloud Private Relay.
  • For browser problems, the conversation link and, if asked, a HAR file recorded while the error happens.

How to keep ChatGPT working on your Mac

  • Bookmark status.openai.com and subscribe to updates.
  • Run Check for Updates in the ChatGPT app now and then.
  • Keep macOS current; the app won't run on anything older than Sonoma.
  • Give ChatGPT Accessibility and Microphone access only if you use those features, and check them after a reinstall.
  • Keep chatgpt.com working in a browser as your fallback when the app misbehaves.
  • Start a new chat for each task instead of growing one endless thread.

Frequently asked questions

Why is ChatGPT not working on my Mac but working on my phone?

If ChatGPT works on your phone over cellular data but not on your Mac, the cause is most likely on the Mac: its network, a VPN, iCloud Private Relay or browser data. Test chatgpt.com in a private window, then turn off the VPN and Private Relay, before reinstalling anything.

How do I know if ChatGPT is down?

Check status.openai.com. It lists ChatGPT's parts separately, such as Conversations, Login, Voice mode and File uploads, so you can see whether the part you're using has an incident.

What is ChatGPT Classic on my Mac?

ChatGPT Classic is the previous ChatGPT Mac app under a new name. OpenAI renamed it in July 2026, when the new ChatGPT desktop app combining Chat, Work and Codex arrived, and says Classic is still supported.

What Mac do I need for the ChatGPT app?

The ChatGPT Mac app needs macOS 14 Sonoma or later, on Apple silicon (M1 or newer) or an Intel processor. On an older Mac, use chatgpt.com in Safari or Chrome.

Will reinstalling the ChatGPT app delete my chats?

Your chats are tied to your ChatGPT account, so check they appear at chatgpt.com before you reinstall. If they do, deleting and reinstalling the app won't remove them, and they'll be there when you sign back in.

Why does ChatGPT say "network error" on my Mac?

OpenAI says a network error means your device can't keep a reliable connection to its servers. Turn off VPNs, proxies and security filters, try another network, and on a work network ask IT to allow OpenAI's domains and WebSocket traffic.
