Gemini vs. ChatGPT in 2026: Prices, Features and Which to Use
Gemini or ChatGPT? Here's how the two compare in 2026 on price, free plans, Google app access, video, privacy and work tools, and which one I'd pick.
Gemini is the better pick if your day runs on Gmail, Google Calendar, Docs and an Android phone, because it reads those apps directly and comes bundled with Google storage. ChatGPT is the better pick if you want one assistant that works across every platform and many third-party work apps. Both cost about $20 a month at the main paid tier, and both have useful free plans.
If you're trying to choose, you've probably noticed that every comparison you read is out of date a month later. The models change constantly. What changes slowly is the stuff that actually decides it for most people: which apps each one plugs into, what you pay, what you get for free, and how each handles your data. That's what this guide covers, with my recommendation for different kinds of work at the end.
Gemini vs. ChatGPT at a glance
The quick version: Gemini is Google's assistant and lives inside Google's apps; ChatGPT is OpenAI's assistant and connects outward to many apps. Here's how they line up on the points most people ask about, using Google's plan page and TechCrunch's report on ChatGPT's plans.
Gemini | ChatGPT | |
|---|---|---|
Made by | OpenAI | |
Free plan | Yes, with 15 GB Google storage and limited access to newer tools | Yes, with ads |
Cheapest paid plan | Google AI Plus, $4.99/month | ChatGPT Go, $8/month (with ads) |
Main paid plan | Google AI Pro, $19.99/month | ChatGPT Plus, $20/month |
Top plans | Google AI Ultra, $99.99 or $199.99/month | ChatGPT Pro, $100 or $200/month |
Works inside | Gmail, Docs, Calendar, Android, Chrome | Its own apps, browser and desktop apps |

Video generation | Yes, on paid plans | No standalone video app since Sora was shut down |
Extra perks | Cloud storage, YouTube Premium on higher plans | Coding tools and higher limits on higher plans |
Prices move
Both companies change plans often. The figures here are US prices as listed in October 2026. Check Google's plan page and ChatGPT's pricing page before you pay.
How much do Gemini and ChatGPT cost?
Gemini's paid plans run from $4.99 to $199.99 a month, and ChatGPT's from $8 to $200 a month. At the tier most people buy, Google AI Pro is $19.99 and ChatGPT Plus is $20, so price alone won't decide it.
Gemini plans
Google sells Gemini as part of its Google AI plans, which also include Google One storage. According to Google's subscription page:
- Free: $0. 15 GB of storage across Gmail, Drive and Photos, plus image generation, Deep Research, Gemini Live, Canvas and Gems.
- Google AI Plus: $4.99/month. 400 GB of storage, about twice the free usage limits, video generation and Gemini in Gmail.
- Google AI Pro: $19.99/month. 5 TB of storage, about four times the free limits, Gemini in Gmail and Docs, and YouTube Premium Lite.
- Google AI Ultra: $99.99/month for five times Pro's limits, or $199.99/month for twenty times. Storage starts at 20 TB, and a YouTube Premium individual plan is included.
Google says usage limits refresh every five hours up to a weekly cap, and depend on how complex your prompts are and how long the chat runs.
ChatGPT plans
OpenAI's lineup, as TechCrunch reported when the $100 tier launched on April 9, 2026:
- Free: $0, with ads.
- Go: $8/month, with ads, and higher limits than Free.
- Plus: $20/month, no ads.
- Pro: $100/month for five times Plus's coding usage, or $200/month for the heaviest users. OpenAI said both Pro tiers share the same features and differ in capacity.
OpenAI said its ads appear at the bottom of answers when there's a relevant sponsored product, are labeled, stay away from topics like health and politics, and that advertisers don't see your conversations. If ads bother you, Plus is the cheapest way out.
Which is the better deal?
At $20, Gemini usually gives you more for the money if you'd pay for Google storage anyway. Google AI Pro bundles 5 TB of storage, and plenty of people already pay Google for 2 TB just to keep their photos. Say Doug runs a two-truck landscaping business outside Columbus and his Google Photos account is full of job-site pictures. For him, Google AI Pro replaces a bill he already has and adds an assistant on top.
ChatGPT Plus is the better deal when the assistant itself is the point: you write, research and analyze in it all day, you want it on a Mac, a Windows PC and an iPhone equally, and you don't care about storage.
Which is better for Gmail, Google Docs and Calendar users?
Gemini is better for anyone who lives in Google's apps, because it works inside them. On the paid plans it appears in Gmail and Docs, and in the Gemini app it can pull from your Gmail, Google Calendar, Maps, YouTube and more when you connect them.
Google's Connected Apps help page lists what you can link: Gmail, Google Calendar and Google Home, media apps like YouTube Music and Spotify, and on Android the Phone, Messages and WhatsApp apps. You turn them on like this:
- Go to gemini.google.com.
- In the sidebar, click Customize (click More first if you don't see it).
- At the top, click Connectors.
- Find the app and click Add.
- In a prompt, type @ and pick the app to use it.
One setting to know
Google says Connected Apps don't work on the web or iPhone when Keep Activity is turned off. If @Gmail is missing, that's the first thing to check.
Here's where this pays off. Say Heather is a real-estate agent in Phoenix with six showings on Saturday. She can ask Gemini to find the confirmation emails, check her calendar for gaps, and map the order of the houses, all without copying anything between tabs.
@Gmail find every showing confirmation I got this week for Saturday. @Google Calendar check where I have gaps between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. Then put the houses in a driving order that starts in Arcadia and ends in Tempe.ChatGPT can reach Gmail and Google Drive too, through its connected apps, but it's reaching into Google from the outside. Gemini is already there.
Which is better for work across many apps?
ChatGPT is usually the better fit when your work spans tools from different companies, like Slack, Microsoft 365, Google Drive and a CRM. OpenAI has built a large catalog of app connections, and in July 2026 it launched ChatGPT Work, an agent that works across Slack, Gmail and Google Drive to build documents and finish multi-step tasks.
Gemini's third-party list is growing, but Google's own help page doesn't name most of them and points to a separate table. My rule: count the apps you open every day. If most of them have a Google logo, Gemini. If they're a mix, ChatGPT.
Say Marcus runs a 14-person design agency in Chicago. His team chats in Slack, invoices in QuickBooks, keeps files in Dropbox and only uses Gmail because it came with the domain. Gemini's Google strengths don't help him much. ChatGPT, connected to the tools his team actually uses, does.
Which is better for images and video?
Gemini is the stronger choice for video, because Google offers video generation on its paid plans and ChatGPT no longer has a standalone video app. Both make and edit images well.
OpenAI announced on March 24, 2026 that it was shutting down Sora, its video app. Google, meanwhile, lists video generation from Google AI Plus upward and gives paid plans credits for Google Flow, its filmmaking tool, per its plan page. If you make short promo clips or social videos, that settles it.
For still images, I wouldn't pick on quality. Both are good enough for a blog header, a slide or a mockup, and each one wins some prompts and loses others. Try your actual use case in both free plans before you pay.
Which is better for writing, research and everyday questions?
For writing and research, Gemini and ChatGPT are close enough that your habits matter more than the model. Both have a deep research mode that reads many sources and writes a cited report, and both have voice chat.
The real differences are in feel. ChatGPT is where many people already have months of chat history, custom instructions and saved projects, and that context makes it better for them specifically. Gemini leans on Google Search and your Google data, which helps for anything local, current or tied to your own inbox.
Both companies ship new models every few months. Google announced Gemini 4 Argon on September 30, 2026, and its plan comparison lists access to it on AI Pro and above. OpenAI has released several model updates this year too. I'd never switch assistants because of one benchmark chart; the lead changes hands too often.
Here's a before-and-after that shows what matters more than the model. Say Kayla is a freelance copywriter in Austin pitching a coffee roaster.
Write a pitch email to a coffee company.Write a 120-word pitch email from me, Kayla, a freelance copywriter, to the marketing lead at a small Austin coffee roaster. They just opened a second cafe. Offer to write the menu descriptions and launch emails for it. Friendly, no hype, one clear ask: a 15-minute call next week.Either assistant writes a usable email from the second prompt and a generic one from the first. The prompt matters more than the logo.
Is Gemini or ChatGPT better for privacy?
Neither is private by default. On the consumer plans, both can use your chats to improve their models unless you change a setting, so the honest answer is: whichever one you've actually configured.
On Gemini, the setting is Keep Activity. Google's privacy hub says that when it's on, your chats are saved and used to improve its services, including training AI models, and reviewers may read a subset. When it's off, future chats aren't used for training unless you send feedback, but Google still keeps them for 72 hours. The catch is the one above: turning it off also turns off Connected Apps on the web and iPhone.
ChatGPT has its own data controls in settings that do the same job, so look there before you paste in anything sensitive. Whatever you pick, my advice is the same: don't paste anything into a consumer AI plan that you wouldn't put in an email to a vendor. Client contracts, health details and passwords belong in tools your company has approved.
What to do if you can't decide
Use the free plans side by side for a week on real work, then pay for one. That beats any comparison table, including mine.
- Pick three tasks you do every week: an email, a research question, a document.
- Run each one in both free plans with the same prompt.
- Note which answer you'd actually send or use without rewriting.
- Check which one connects to the apps you open most.
- Pay for that one for a month, and cancel if it doesn't earn its keep.
Plenty of people end up keeping one free plan and paying for the other. That's a perfectly sensible setup: Gemini free for Google-heavy questions, ChatGPT Plus for everything else, or the reverse.
My recommendation
Choose Gemini if you use Gmail and Google Calendar every day, have an Android phone, want video generation, or already pay Google for storage. Choose ChatGPT if your tools come from many companies, you want the same assistant on every device, or you already have a lot of history and projects in it.
If you… | I'd pick |
|---|---|
Live in Gmail, Docs and Google Calendar | Gemini |
Need more cloud storage anyway | Gemini (Google AI Pro) |
Make short videos for social or ads | Gemini |
Work across Slack, Microsoft 365 and other non-Google tools | ChatGPT |
Write code with an assistant every day | ChatGPT (Plus or Pro) |
Already have months of chats and projects saved | Whichever one you already use |
Watch the switching cost
Your chat history, saved instructions and custom assistants don't move between the two. The longer you use one, the more it costs you to leave, so decide early and on real work.
Next steps after you choose
- Connect your apps on day one. Most of the value comes from the assistant seeing your mail, calendar and files.
- Set custom instructions (ChatGPT) or Gems (Gemini) with your role, tone and the things you ask for weekly.
- Check the privacy setting that controls training, and decide on purpose.
- Put a reminder on your calendar for 30 days out to ask whether the subscription is worth it.
Want an assistant that follows through?
Gemini and ChatGPT answer when you ask. Merlin is a Mac app that also keeps track of your people and commitments: who's waiting on a reply, what you promised, what's on tomorrow. It works with Gmail, Google Calendar, Slack and Notion, and when you ask it in chat to send an email or change an event, it shows you a card to review and approve first.
