Google Gemini Alternatives in 2026: Leaving Gemini or Leaving Google?
Google Gemini is the right pick if your days run on Gmail, Docs and Drive and you'd use the storage in its plans. Proton Lumo fits privacy worries, Microsoft Copilot fits Office users, ChatGPT and Claude fit anyone wanting a different assistant, and Merlin fits Gmail users working on a Mac.
We make Merlin, one of the tools on this page. Every claim about other tools is checked against their own sites.
The best Google Gemini alternative depends on whether your complaint is with Gemini or with Google. Leaving Google over data use points to Proton Lumo. A Microsoft Office workday points to Microsoft Copilot. If you're keeping Gmail and only want a different assistant, compare ChatGPT and Claude. Merlin, the Mac app we make, suits Gmail users who want people and errands tracked.
Gemini is harder to walk away from than most chat apps, because it's tied to the account that holds your mail. A subscription can also be what's paying for your inbox's storage. So start with the sentence below that sounds most like you, and read the cancellation check before you touch your billing.
What's bothering you | Try this inside Gemini first | If that isn't enough |
|---|---|---|
Google reading or keeping my chats | Turn off Keep Activity or use temporary chats | Proton Lumo |
I hit limits too often | Move up a plan, Plus starts at $4.99 a month | ChatGPT or Claude, which also have limits |
My documents live in Word and Outlook | Ask about Gemini Enterprise's Microsoft 365 connectors | Microsoft Copilot |
I'm paying for more than I use | Drop to Plus or Free after checking your storage | ChatGPT Go or Lumo Plus |
It answers, but my follow-ups still slip | Try Tasks in Gemini, formerly Spark, on a Pro plan | Merlin, on a Mac with Gmail |
What Google Gemini does well
Google Gemini's strongest case is its reach into Google's own apps, at a low entry price. With the Workspace connection, Gemini finds and summarizes material across Gmail, Docs and Drive and can create and manage Google Calendar events. Google's October 2026 release notes say you can now connect more than 40 apps and services, Instacart, OpenTable and Adobe among them, on the web, on mobile and in the Windows and Mac apps.
The free plan isn't a token gesture either. Google's plan page lists image generation and editing, Deep Research, Gemini Live and Canvas at $0. Paid plans run from AI Plus at $4.99 a month to AI Pro at $19.99 a month, then AI Ultra at $99.99 or $199.99 a month. Each also adds shared Google storage for your mail, files and pictures: 400 GB on Plus, 5 TB on Pro, and from 20 TB on Ultra. Pro and Ultra include a YouTube Premium plan as well.
Tasks in Gemini, the agent Google launched as Gemini Spark, may also close the gap that sent you looking. Google described Spark as a cloud-based agent that keeps working after you close your laptop, and its help page says Gemini is designed to ask before purchases or sending communications. That page also lists the conditions: Google AI Pro or Ultra, a personal Google Account and Keep Activity on, and no availability in the European Economic Area, Nigeria, Switzerland or the UK. Pro subscribers in over 160 additional countries were added in July 2026. For more background, see our plain guide to Gemini and what Gemini does inside Workspace.
Why people look for a Gemini alternative
People leave Google Gemini mostly over data handling, usage limits, or a workday built around other software, and Google's own help pages explain the first two.
- Human review. Google's privacy hub says a subset of consumer chats are read by human reviewers, and that those reviewed chats are kept for up to three years.
- Limits you can't count in advance. Gemini's limits are based on compute: prompt complexity, model, features and chat length all count. Your allowance refreshes every 5 hours until you reach a weekly limit, and a subscriber who hits it can carry on with the lighter Flash-Lite model.
- A workday in other software. The Workspace connection in the Gemini app is about Google's apps. Gemini Enterprise, from $21 per seat a month, lists connectors to Microsoft 365, but that isn't the same as an assistant inside Word.
Check three things before you cancel Gemini
Cancelling a Google AI plan can affect your email, and some privacy concerns have a fix inside Gemini, so these come before any switch.
- See how much storage you're using. After the billing period ends, your account drops to the free 15 GB. If you're over, Gmail can't send or receive and messages go back to their senders. Drive uploads and Photos backups stop too, and Google says content may be deleted after two years over quota. Clear space first, or buy storage.
- Weigh Keep Activity. With it off, future chats aren't used to train Google's models and are held for 72 hours, the same as temporary chats. The catch: Gemini can't connect to Workspace with the setting off, so the private setup gives up Gmail, Docs and Drive answers. If you can live without those, you may not need to leave.
- Look at which account you're on. The review and retention rules above describe personal accounts. On qualifying Workspace editions, Google says chats and uploads aren't reviewed by humans or used to train models outside your domain without permission. If your objection comes from consumer coverage, your company account may already be treated differently.
To leave Google behind: Proton Lumo
Proton Lumo is built around the objections consumer Gemini draws. Proton says conversations are stored with zero-access encryption so that even Proton can't read them, that it doesn't log chats or train on them, and that its code is open source so people can check. Those are Proton's own claims, and its Gemini comparison page makes the case at greater length.
The trade is reach. Lumo's page names web search and Proton Drive as what it works with, on the web, iOS and Android, and doesn't list Gmail or calendar actions. Lumo Plus is $9.99 a month, billed at $119.88 every 12 months, and there's a limited free plan.
Who Lumo fits: someone whose main reason for leaving is who can read the chat, and who is happy to paste in what the assistant needs.
If your work lives in Office: Microsoft Copilot
Microsoft Copilot sits inside Microsoft's own Office apps. Microsoft 365 Personal, at $9.99 a month or $99.99 a year, puts Copilot in the Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook desktop apps on PCs and Macs, with 1 TB of storage. Family costs $12.99 a month or $129.99 a year for up to six people, but Copilot features in those apps are for the subscription owner only. Premium, at $19.99 a month or $199.99 a year, adds higher AI limits, and Pro, at $99.99 a month, is the top personal tier.
Companies pay differently. Microsoft's business pricing lists Business Standard with Copilot at $28.20 per user a month, or $23.50 paid yearly. On data, Microsoft's privacy FAQ says it doesn't train on Copilot used within Microsoft 365 Personal and Family apps.
Who Copilot fits: anyone whose documents are already in Microsoft's apps. The move only pays off if the files move too, so a Gmail and Drive user would be switching far more than an assistant.
If you're keeping Gmail: ChatGPT or Claude
ChatGPT and Claude can both link to your Gmail and your Google calendar, so you can change assistants without changing your email address. Neither removes limits or data questions: both have them, in different forms.
ChatGPT
ChatGPT's plans are Free, Go at $8 a month, Plus at $20 a month, and Pro at $100, $200 or $500 a month. OpenAI's help center says ads may appear on Free and Go, and not on Plus or Pro, which matters if you came for a cheap plan. Its June 2026 release notes say Plus and Pro users with Gmail or Outlook connected can send email from the web. Personal plans share data for training by default, and you can turn that off in Data controls.
Who ChatGPT fits: someone who wants one general assistant, connected to Gmail or Outlook, and doesn't mind the same default-on training question Gemini raises.
Claude
Claude's plans are Free, Pro at $20 a month ($17 a month billed yearly), Max at $100 a month and Ultra at $200 a month. Free has limits every 5 hours and weekly, a pattern Gemini users will recognize. Claude's Google connectors are open to all users and cover reading, drafting and sending Gmail plus Calendar changes, asking approval by default before each send. Anthropic says it doesn't train on that connector data, with a caveat for content you copy out if you've opted in to training. Its help center ties other chats to a Model Improvement setting you can change, and incognito chats are excluded. Apps cover Mac, Windows and mobile.
Who Claude fits: a Gmail user who likes an approval step on email and wants the assistant's data rules spelled out setting by setting.
If follow-through is the gap: Merlin on a Mac
Merlin, which we make, is a Mac app that tracks people and commitments and carries out errands on websites. A People panel shows who is waiting on your reply and who has gone quiet. Browser tasks run in Merlin's own browser, filling forms, booking or cancelling, and pause before paying or submitting anything it can't take back. The Meetings feature records calls on your Mac (transcripts need a paid plan), and routines, jobs you set up to run on their own, fire on a schedule or on a Gmail or Calendar event.
Approvals depend on where the work starts. An email or calendar change requested in chat waits for your confirmation. Routines run unattended, so one you've allowed to post to Slack posts without asking you first.
Merlin won't help if you're trying to leave Google, because setup requires Gmail and Google Calendar. It also isn't a privacy pick in the Lumo sense: our privacy policy says we don't sell personal information, and that the context for each request goes to the AI providers handling it. There's no Windows, Android or iPhone version, and it can't place phone calls. Browser tasks pause when your Mac sleeps, where Google's agent keeps going in its cloud. If you run Merlin beside Gemini's Mac app, note that both open with Option + Space. Merlin's plans start with 5,000 free credits a month, then Pro at $29 a month or $278 a year, with Ultra at $99 and Max at $299 a month as the larger tiers. Jobs use up credits at different rates, so there's no fixed number of them a month.
Who Merlin fits: someone on a Mac and Gmail whose real problem is the replies and small errands that never get done, more than the quality of any answer.

How to take your Gemini history with you
Google Takeout exports your Gemini chats, and exporting doesn't remove them. Google's export guide sets out the route.
- Go to takeout.google.com and sign in with the Google account you use for Gemini.
- Click Deselect all, then check Gemini to include your Gems.
- Check My Activity, choose All activity data included, click Deselect all in the pop-up, check Gemini Apps and click OK.
- Click Next step, choose a delivery method and file type, then create the export. Google emails you a link, which can take a few hours to a few days.
- Delete your activity separately if you want it gone, since the download only makes a copy. Reviewed chats follow the three-year rule above.
Staying might be the right answer
If your only complaint is cost and you're under 15 GB, the free plan still includes Deep Research and Canvas. Try it for a month before you move anything.
Keep Gemini for answers, hand Merlin the loose ends
Gemini and Merlin can share a Gmail account. Merlin looks after the part that happens after the answer: who's still waiting on you, what's on tomorrow, and the form you keep meaning to fill in. The free plan costs nothing to try alongside Gemini.
Get MerlinFrequently asked questions
Is there a free alternative to Google Gemini?
Yes, several, and the right one depends on why you're leaving. ChatGPT's Free plan and Claude's Free plan are general assistants that can work with Gmail in different ways, while Proton Lumo's free plan is the choice for privacy. All three have usage limits.
Which Gemini alternative is most private?
Of the products compared here, Proton Lumo makes the strongest claims: zero-access encrypted chat history, no chat logging and no training on your chats. Those are Proton's statements, and it publishes its code so people can check them.
Will I lose my Gmail if I cancel Google AI Pro?
No, your account stays, but your storage falls to the free 15 GB when the billing period ends. If you're over that, Gmail can't send or receive until you clear space or buy storage.
Does Google read my Gemini chats?
Google says a subset of personal-account chats are read by human reviewers and kept for up to three years. Turning Keep Activity off stops future chats being used for training, though Google still holds them for 72 hours to respond and protect users. Qualifying Workspace accounts aren't reviewed this way.
Is there a Gemini alternative for Microsoft Office?
Microsoft Copilot is the direct match. Microsoft 365 Personal costs $9.99 a month or $99.99 a year and puts Copilot in the Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook desktop apps.
