Grok Alternatives in 2026: After the X Subscription Bundle
Grok suits people who want live X posts in their answers and a free place to start. For cited web research, try Perplexity. For a Mac or Windows app, ChatGPT. For approval before each Gmail action, Claude. For help inside Gmail and Docs, Gemini. For follow-through from your Gmail on a Mac, Merlin.
We make Merlin, one of the tools on this page. Every claim about other tools is checked against their own sites.
The right Grok alternative depends on which job you gave Grok. Perplexity fits cited web research from $17 a month billed annually. ChatGPT has Mac and Windows apps, with Plus at $20 a month. Claude asks before each Gmail action. Gemini costs least, from $4.99 a month. Merlin, which we make, acts across a Mac.
Since October 12, 2026, new Grok customers buy The X Subscription: one plan that also carries Cursor coding usage and X perks. That's a good deal if you use all three. If you only ever opened Grok to ask questions and draft things, you may now be looking at the bill differently. Below: what Grok still does best, what the new plan changed, and where each everyday job could go instead.
Where Grok is hard to beat
Grok is the assistant from xAI (its documentation now names the company SpaceXSI), and it is strongest when the answer lives on X. Its X Search documentation describes keyword, semantic and user search plus thread fetching across real-time posts and profiles. If following what people are saying on X is your actual job, stay on Grok.
Grok also gives away more than you might expect:
- A free start on the web and phones. Grok runs at grok.com and in iOS and Android apps, with chats and settings synced after one sign-in, and covers chat, voice, file uploads and Grok Imagine, per xAI's overview.
- Connectors on every plan. xAI says connectors are "available to all Grok users": Gmail and Google Calendar, Google Drive, OneDrive, Outlook, Microsoft Teams, SharePoint and Salesforce, a third-party catalog, and custom MCP servers.
- Automations. Grok Automations repeat a prompt on a schedule for everyone, and email triggers come with SuperGrok, the older paid plan whose benefits now sit in Premium and up. Runs are saved as conversations you can reopen and continue.
- Grok Bot, on the Premium plan and up. Announced in beta in August 2026, Grok Bot gives you named agents on a persistent cloud computer, with desktop apps for macOS, Windows and Linux. Work keeps going when your laptop is closed, and approval cards appear for actions you've reserved. Emails it writes from background work stay as drafts until you press Send.
So a missing feature is rarely the honest reason to leave. The reasons worth weighing are the price structure, the way usage is counted, and where Grok lives on your computer.
What The X Subscription changed
The X Subscription sells Grok, Cursor and X as one plan, and it's where new customers start, according to xAI's announcement. The prices below are the monthly figures in that announcement, and usage is expressed as a multiple of Plus.
Plan | Price | Grok and Cursor usage | What else comes with it |
|---|---|---|---|
Free | $0 | Limited | Daily Grok access, a starter Cursor allowance, standard X |
Plus | $8 a month | Base | Checkmark, creator tools and fewer X ads |
Premium | $30 a month | 4x Plus | Benefits of SuperGrok, Cursor Pro and X Premium+ |
Super | $100 a month | 15x Plus | All Premium features |
Ultra | $200 a month | 50x Plus | All Premium features |
xAI says existing SuperGrok, Cursor and X Premium subscribers can keep their plan, price and features, or switch with a prorated refund of the old plan. Team seats on Premium, Super and Ultra cost the same as individual plans and add SSO, admin controls and consolidated billing.
What sends people looking beyond Grok
You pay for X and Cursor whether you use them or not
Grok's $30 Premium plan is the tier that carries SuperGrok's benefits, and it is $10 more than ChatGPT Plus, Claude Pro on monthly billing or Perplexity Pro on monthly billing. For someone who codes in Cursor and posts on X, xAI's figure of $90 a month for the same pieces bought separately makes that a bargain. For someone who does neither, most of that value goes unused. Plus at $8 is the cheaper way in, with a quarter of Premium's usage.
One weekly pool runs out for everything
Paid Grok usage comes from a single weekly pool shared across products, and a long video or coding task costs far more than a chat message, per xAI's FAQ. When the pool runs out, paid features pause until the reset unless you buy Extra Usage Credits, which cost more per action than included usage. A heavy Grok Imagine week can leave less for your everyday questions.
The chat assistant has no desktop app
xAI lists Grok chat on the web, iOS and Android, and its App Store listing shows iPhone, iPad and Apple Vision but no Mac. The desktop apps belong to Grok Bot, a separate product. If you want an assistant a keystroke away while you work, this matters more than any model comparison.
The Gmail docs describe no confirmation step
Grok's Gmail connector reads and searches mail and creates drafts, while sending and replying need send tools enabled. Of that connected mail and calendar data, the page says "We do not train on your data" and that nothing is stored. It doesn't describe a confirmation step before a send, and the Automations announcement doesn't mention one either. If you need a written promise of review before anything goes out in chat, Claude and Merlin both document one, below.
Leaving won't settle the training question
Grok's consumer chats can train its models unless you switch off Improve the Model in settings or use Private Chat, per xAI's consumer FAQ. The big consumer alternatives work in a similar way. ChatGPT and Perplexity have data use on by default for consumer plans, Gemini ties it to Keep Activity, and Claude trains when its setting is on. Merlin's privacy page explains what it sends when handling AI requests, and doesn't state a position on model training. Check the setting wherever you land.
Where each Grok job can go
Live answers with sources: Perplexity
Perplexity calls itself an AI answer engine that researches the open web in real time and returns cited answers. Its free plan has citations in every answer, practically unlimited basic searches and 3 Pro Searches a day. Pro is $17 a month billed annually or $20 month to month, and Max is $167 a month billed annually.
Perplexity reaches your inbox too, with limits: its Gmail and Calendar connector queries one primary calendar only, and sending email from its Assistant is described for Comet, Perplexity's own browser. Perplexity is the closest match if you used Grok as a search engine that talks back.
An everyday assistant on your desktop: ChatGPT
ChatGPT is the plainest swap for someone who wants one app for everything. OpenAI's pricing starts at free, then Go at $8 and Plus at $20 a month, with Pro from $100. Its desktop app covers macOS and Windows and can work with files, use a browser and run scheduled tasks, which is the gap Grok chat leaves.
OpenAI's release notes say drafting and sending email from a chat works on the web on Plus and above with Gmail or Outlook connected. For a side-by-side with Google's assistant, see our Gemini vs. ChatGPT guide.
Asked before each action: Claude
Claude is the alternative with the clearest published rule on acting for you. Anthropic's Google Workspace help article lists sending and replying to email and creating or changing calendar events, then says "By default, Claude asks for your approval before each of these actions." It also says Anthropic doesn't train on Gmail, Drive or Calendar connector data.
Claude's pricing starts free, with up to 5 Projects, then Pro at $20 a month, or $17 a month on the $200 annual plan. Max is $100 and Ultra $200 a month. Connectors come with every plan, and chat runs on the web, iOS, Android and desktop. Allowing training extends retention to five years, against 30 days if you don't, so read that setting when you sign up.
Already living in Google: Gemini
Gemini has the lowest entry price here. Google's plan page lists Google AI Plus at $4.99 a month with Gemini in Gmail and 400 GB of storage, and Google AI Pro at $19.99 a month with Gemini in Gmail and Docs and 5 TB. For a household already paying for Google storage, that may change the math on its own.
Scheduled actions repeat a prompt daily, weekly or monthly, up to 10 at a time, but they need Keep Activity on, the same setting that lets Google use your activity to improve its AI. Google also says they're still rolling out to personal accounts. Our guide to Gemini connected apps walks through the setup.
Follow-through on a Mac: Merlin
Merlin is our product, so read this one knowing that. It's a Mac app built around people and follow-through more than quick answers. It keeps track of the people you deal with: who is waiting on a reply, who has gone quiet, whose birthday is next. It records calls, runs errands on websites in its own browser, and opens over any Mac app with ⌥Space, already aware of the app in front and any text you highlighted.
Ask in chat for an email or a calendar change and you get an editable card first; nothing goes out until you confirm. Routines work differently: they run unattended, so a routine you've allowed to post to Slack will post without asking.
The limits are firm. Merlin is Mac only, with no phone, web or Windows version, and you can't finish onboarding without connecting Gmail and Google Calendar. It doesn't make phone calls and has nothing like Grok's X search. Free includes 5,000 credits a month and two saved routines, Pro is $29 a month or $278 a year. Each task spends credits according to what it costs, so usage varies, and new credit-based work pauses at zero. Transcripts and a Merlin email address need a paid plan. Grok is the better pick on Windows or a phone, and on X.

How to choose a Grok alternative
- You watch X closely for your work or your interests: stay on Grok. Plus at $8 may be all you need.
- You code in Cursor and post on X, too: stay on Premium. Replacing all three pieces would cost more.
- You mostly research and want to check sources: Perplexity, starting on the free plan.
- You want a desktop app on Windows or a Mac and one tool for most things: ChatGPT.
- You're connecting a work inbox and want a review step by default: Claude.
- You pay for Google storage already, or want the lowest bill: Google AI Plus or Pro.
- Your trouble is forgotten replies and errands, and you use Gmail on a Mac: Merlin.
Before you cancel Grok
- Cancel where you bought it. Web plans are managed from Grok's billing page, App Store plans through Apple and Google Play plans through Google, per xAI's FAQ.
- Remember what else stops. On The X Subscription, the same plan pays for your X perks and Cursor usage, so check those before you change tiers.
- Save what you need. Stored files live at grok.com/files, and other data controls are in Settings under Data Controls. A deleted account can be restored within 30 days.
- Disconnect your connectors. xAI says disconnecting revokes access, so do it for Gmail, Drive and anything else you linked, then pause or delete any Automations.
- Run your new tool for a week on the real questions you asked Grok, before the renewal date.
From a good answer to the reply actually sent
If your Grok chats keep ending with a draft you still have to paste somewhere, Merlin works from your Gmail and calendar on your Mac and puts the finished email in front of you to edit and confirm. Starting free needs no payment details.
