Gmail Not Working on Mac in 2026? Find the Fix by Symptom

Gmail won't load in Safari, or Apple Mail won't sync or sign in? Find where it broke on your Mac, then fix the browser, sign-in, storage or network.

When Gmail isn't working on a Mac, first open mail.google.com in a private Safari window. If it loads there, your Gmail account is healthy, and the fault is in Safari's saved data, an extension or the Apple Mail setup. If it fails there too, check Google's status page, your network and your storage.

A blank inbox five minutes before a meeting tends to send everyone straight to deleting things. Hold off. Gmail on a Mac can break in several separate places, and the fix for one does nothing for the others. This guide starts by finding the broken part, then covers Safari, Apple Mail, full storage, sending limits, notifications and your network.

Find out which part of Gmail is broken

Three quick tests separate a Gmail problem from a Mac problem, and they take less time than any fix. Google makes no Gmail app for the Mac, so you're reaching Gmail through a browser or through a separate mail app (our guide to Gmail apps for Mac compares them). Each of those can fail on its own.

  1. Check for an outage. Open the Google Workspace Status Dashboard and look at the Gmail row. Google tells you to start here. Apple adds that brief outages may not show up on a provider's status page, so a clean dashboard doesn't completely clear Google.
  2. Try a private window. In Safari, choose File > New Private Window and open mail.google.com, signing in when asked. If it fails there too, try Chrome or Firefox if you have one. A private window skips your saved site data, and on macOS Sonoma or later, extensions that need website access are off there by default.
  3. Try your phone. Open Gmail on another device. If your mail appears there, the account itself is working. Apple makes the same point about webmail: it confirms the account works, not that it's set up correctly in Mail.

Then match what you saw:

How to fix Gmail not loading in Safari

When Gmail won't load in Safari, Google's checklist comes down to saved site data, extensions and an out-of-date browser. Safari is on Google's list of supported browsers, alongside Chrome, Firefox and Microsoft Edge, and Gmail works best in the newest version of each and the one before it. Try these in the order below, reloading Gmail after each one.

Remove Gmail's saved data from Safari

Clearing one site's data is much gentler than clearing everything. Apple's steps for Safari let you pick a single site:

  1. Choose Safari > Settings, then click Privacy.
  2. Click Manage Website Data.
  3. Select the entries for Google, then click Remove. Don't click Remove All.
  4. Go back to Gmail and sign in again.

Apple warns that this may sign you out of websites, so expect to sign back in to Google. I learned to be this selective the hard way. The first time Gmail went blank on me, I wiped everything in Safari and spent the rest of the morning signing back in to every site I use.

Turn off Safari extensions one at a time

Google says some extensions can stop Gmail from working, and an extension can even trigger a "This browser is not supported" message in a browser that is supported. If the private window worked, suspect these before anything else.

  1. Choose Safari > Settings, then click Extensions.
  2. Deselect the checkbox next to one extension.
  3. Reload Gmail. If nothing changes, turn that one back on and try the next.

Going one at a time feels slower than turning them all off, but it tells you which extension did it, and you get to keep the rest.

Check cookies, JavaScript and your Safari version

Gmail needs cookies and JavaScript turned on. JavaScript has its own checkbox, Enable JavaScript, under Safari's Security settings. Cookies are handled in Safari's Privacy settings. The same page warns that Use advanced tracking and fingerprinting protection can affect some website features, so if you have it on for all browsing, turn it off for one test.

Safari updates arrive with macOS, under System Settings > General > Software Update. If your Mac can no longer update Safari, install Chrome or Firefox instead. Google's own advice is to update your browser or try another one, and it notes that Gmail may not load on older devices.

What Gmail's error messages mean

Gmail's error messages point to different fixes, and Google's error guide sorts them this way:

Gmail error messages in the browser

Message

What it means

What to do

Temporary Error (502)

Gmail is briefly unavailable, usually at sign-in

Wait a few minutes, then sign in again

Oops (with codes such as 500 or 602)

Usually a browser setting

Check extensions, clear cache and cookies, then check Gmail's Advanced settings

Bad Request

Usually a browser setting

Same steps as Oops

No connection

A network problem

Restart the Mac, switch Wi-Fi off and on, try another network

For the third Oops step, open Settings > See all settings > Advanced in Gmail, disable any features you've enabled, and click Save Changes.

How to fix Gmail in the Mac Mail app

If Gmail works on the web but not in Apple Mail, the account itself is working, and what's failing is how Mail connects to it. Start by reading what Mail reports before you change anything. For stuck outgoing messages in particular, we have a longer walk-through of the Outbox and outgoing server.

Read Mail's status, then run Connection Doctor

  1. Look for a warning symbol or lightning bolt next to your Gmail inbox in the sidebar, and click it.
  2. If the account is offline, choose Mailbox > Online Status and take that account online.
  3. Choose Window > Connection Doctor and read the Details column for your Gmail account, as Apple's guide describes.
  4. After any change, click Check Again to see whether it helped.

If Mail says it can't reach the server or that the network is offline while websites load normally, Apple points at VPNs and other software that interacts with your network. I had exactly that once: Mail insisted it couldn't connect, every website loaded, and the cause was a VPN I'd left running from the day before.

Fix a failed Gmail sign-in in Mail

Google's fix for a failed Gmail sign-in in a mail app is to remove the account and sign in again with Google. Third-party apps that ask for only a username and password no longer work with Gmail, and Google gives this fix for errors like "Username and password not accepted" and "Invalid credentials." If Mail rejects your details while you're adding the account, our guide to that error has more.

Before you remove the account

Apple says removing an account deletes its messages from your Mac, while copies stay on the mail server. If you aren't sure something is still on Gmail, check at mail.google.com first, or copy it to a mailbox under On My Mac.

  1. Open Mail > Settings, then the Accounts tab.
  2. Select your Gmail account, then click the Remove button. If other apps use the account, open System Settings > Internet Accounts instead, select it there and turn Mail off, then back on there rather than adding a second copy in the next steps. That keeps your other apps signed in, but it may not clear the error. If the error comes back, remove the account.
  3. Choose Mail > Add Account.
  4. Enter your Gmail address, or choose your provider from the list, then click Continue.
  5. Sign in on Google's page when it appears.

Google also mentions app passwords for accounts with 2-Step Verification, but says they aren't recommended and are unnecessary in most cases. Treat one as a last resort, not the first thing you try.

Other Apple Mail and Gmail problems

  • Looking for the IMAP switch: stop looking. Older guides tell you to turn on IMAP in Gmail's settings, but Google says IMAP is now always on for Gmail.
  • An account your employer or school runs: a Google Workspace administrator can turn IMAP off, and then people can't get their email in mail apps even if they could before. Google notes that managed accounts may not see the Forwarding and POP/IMAP tab at all, so this one goes to your IT team.
  • "Too many simultaneous connections": Gmail allows up to 15 email clients per account. Sign out of the ones you no longer use, old laptops included.
  • Mail crashing or downloading forever: in Gmail, open Settings > See all settings > Forwarding and POP/IMAP and limit IMAP folders to 10,000 messages or fewer.
  • Everything looks right but mail is suspended: providers sometimes hold email until you accept new terms. Sign in at Google on the web and look for a notice.

Check your Google storage if Gmail stopped sending and receiving

When a Google account runs out of storage, Gmail stops sending and receiving. Google says that messages sent to you go back to the sender while you're over the limit, and nothing about your Mac will look wrong. Personal accounts get up to 15 GB, shared across Gmail, Google Drive and Google Photos.

That sharing is what catches people out, and it caught me. A client told me their email to me had bounced, Gmail looked perfectly normal, and the space had gone on videos in Google Photos, not mail at all. So don't rely on Apple Mail's Get Account Info for this. It shows your mailboxes and the storage they use, which can't tell you what Drive and Photos are holding. Open Storage in Google Drive instead, which counts all three.

To free space, using Google's suggestions:

  • Empty Trash and Spam in Gmail, and the trash in Drive and Photos.
  • Search Gmail for has:attachment larger:10M and delete the big messages you don't need. Our guide to mass deleting in Gmail covers doing this in bulk.
  • Open Storage in Google Drive to list files from largest to smallest.
  • Buy more space through Google One if you'd rather keep everything.

Allow up to 48 to 72 hours for the new total to appear after a big cleanup, so don't assume the deletion failed. Google also warns that staying over quota for 2 years may lead it to delete content across Gmail, Drive and Photos.

Sending limits and large attachments

Gmail refuses to send when you pass its limits, and the message usually says so. Personal Gmail accounts can be blocked for sending to more than 500 recipients in one email or more than 500 emails in a day.

When you can send again

You have reached a limit for sending mail

Attachments have their own cap of 25 MB on personal accounts, and Workspace administrators set their own. Google describes Gmail swapping an oversized file for a Google Drive link automatically. If you're sending from Apple Mail, upload the file to Drive first and paste the link into your message. Gmail also won't let you attach executable files, such as anything ending in .exe.

Gmail notifications not working on Mac

Gmail notifications on a Mac depend on two settings: one inside Gmail and one in macOS. Both have to be on, and Safari adds a per-site permission on top.

  1. In Gmail, open Settings > See all settings, scroll to Desktop notifications, choose New mail notifications on, and click Save Changes (Google's steps).
  2. Open System Settings > Notifications, click the website under Application Notifications, and turn on Allow Notifications (Apple's steps).
  3. If you use Safari, check the site's permission under Safari > Settings > Websites > Notifications.

Check one more thing before you call it broken. With inbox categories on, Google says new-mail alerts only cover your Primary category. The last time I decided notifications had died on my Mac, the reply I was waiting for had simply landed under Updates.

When your network is the problem

If Gmail fails in every browser on your Mac but works on your phone over cellular, look at the connection. Google's order is to restart the Mac, switch Wi-Fi off and back on, restart your router, and then try a different network. Your phone's hotspot makes that last test easy.

Two Mac-specific things can get in the way as well:

  • A VPN or network filter. Apple names VPNs and software that monitors your connection as causes of offline errors in Mail. Turn yours off and try again.
  • iCloud Private Relay, if you pay for iCloud+. Apple says some websites try to prevent browsing through it. Apple doesn't name Gmail here, so this is only a test: in Safari, choose View > Reload and Show IP Address, which temporarily lets the site see your IP address. If Gmail then loads, Private Relay may be the cause. To test more widely, go to System Settings, click your name, then iCloud > Private Relay, and turn it off with Turn Off Until Tomorrow, which Apple says turns itself back on within 24 hours. Your network provider can see your browsing while it's off.

How to stop Gmail breaking on your Mac again

A few small habits head off most of the problems above, or at least make them cheaper when they happen:

  • Add Gmail to mail apps with Google's sign-in page, never by typing server settings by hand.
  • Keep macOS up to date, since that also updates Safari and Mail.
  • Look at your Google storage every few months, especially if your phone backs up photos and videos to Google.
  • Be choosy about Safari extensions that read the pages you visit. Each one is another thing that can get between you and your inbox.
  • Keep Gmail signed in on your phone, so one broken Mac never stands between you and your email.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my Gmail not working on my Mac?

The likely causes are Safari's saved data, an extension, Apple Mail's sign-in, a full Google storage quota or your network. Open mail.google.com in a private Safari window: if it loads, your account is working and the place to look is your Mac.

Why won't Gmail load in Safari?

Start with saved site data and extensions. Remove Google's data under Safari > Settings > Privacy > Manage Website Data, turn off extensions one at a time, and make sure Safari is up to date.

Why did Gmail stop working in Apple Mail?

The sign-in has often stopped being accepted, for example after a password change. Remove the Gmail account in Mail > Settings > Accounts and add it back with Mail > Add Account, signing in on Google's page. Removing it deletes the Mac's copies, while the messages stay on Gmail.

Do I need to turn on IMAP in Gmail to use Apple Mail?

No. Google says IMAP is always on for Gmail, so there's no switch to look for. On an account your employer or school runs, a Google Workspace administrator can still turn IMAP off.

Can full Google storage stop Gmail from working?

Yes. When your 15 GB is used up, you can't send or receive Gmail, and messages sent to you go back to the sender. Google Drive and Google Photos count toward the same total.

Is there a Gmail app for Mac?

Google doesn't make a Gmail app for the Mac. You use Gmail in a browser such as Safari or Chrome, or add your account to a mail app such as Apple Mail.

A way into your inbox while Safari misbehaves

When the browser or Apple Mail is the broken part, your Gmail is still working behind it. If that account is connected to Merlin, our personal assistant app for the Mac, you can ask for the email you need in chat, or have Merlin draft the reply, then read it and approve it before it goes. It won't get you past a Google outage or full storage, since those stop the account itself.
