ChatGPT Alternatives in 2026: Same $20, Different Strengths

The short answer

Stay with ChatGPT if you want one assistant for chat, files, code and multi-step work on web, phone and desktop. Choose Claude for long documents without ads, Gemini if you live in Google apps, Perplexity for sourced answers, Lumo for private chats, and Merlin if you use a Mac and keep dropping replies.

We make Merlin, one of the tools on this page. Every claim about other tools is checked against their own sites.

The Merlin team10 min read

A search for a ChatGPT alternative often starts with one complaint, not a dislike of the whole product: ads on a free plan, a limit, thin sourcing, or unease about a private chat. Since the main paid plans cost about the same, price won't settle it. What each product does for that money will.

What ChatGPT does well

OpenAI's ChatGPT puts a lot under one login. Regular chat handles quick answers and short drafts, while ChatGPT Work takes a multi-step job and returns something you can review, such as a deck, an analysis or a spreadsheet. You can follow along and approve important actions, and plugins connect it to Slack, Google Drive, email, calendars and CRM systems.

It also goes wherever you work. OpenAI says Chat, Work and Codex are in the desktop app on every plan, including Free, on Windows and Mac, with web and mobile apps alongside. Scheduled tasks can run on a timetable or, on eligible plans, on Gmail, Slack and GitHub events. Pro and Business Premium accounts in supported regions can also get a dot, an always-on agent that keeps its own notes. If you rely on several of these together, check that a replacement covers each one before you cancel.

Three ChatGPT complaints you can fix without leaving

Ads, model training and sensitive one-off chats all have settings or plan choices inside ChatGPT. Try these first, because they take minutes and switching doesn't.

  • Ads. OpenAI's ads help page says ads appear on Free and Go, and not on Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise or Edu. Free users can pick an Ads-Free option, with lower usage limits and fewer features. Turning off personalization under Settings > Ad Controls doesn't remove ads; they can still follow the current chat's topic.
  • Training. Personal accounts share data for model improvement by default. Turn off **Improve the model for everyone** under Settings > Data controls, and new chats stay in your history without training OpenAI's models.
  • A sensitive one-off. A Temporary Chat stays out of your history and isn't used for training, though OpenAI may hold a copy for 30 days at most for safety.

If the complaint is generic answers, better instructions may help more than a new subscription. Our list of ChatGPT prompts is a free place to test that.

Switching won't shrink the next price jump

The gap above the $20 tier is nearly the same at the big assistants. ChatGPT goes from Plus at $20 a month to Pro at $100. Claude goes from $20 to Max at $100. Google goes from $19.99 for AI Pro to $99.99 for AI Ultra. Perplexity's step is bigger, from $20 to $200.

Each of those plans has usage limits of its own, so leaving over a cap may just move the cap. If the goal is to spend less, look down the ladder instead: ChatGPT Go is $8 a month with ads, Google AI Plus is $4.99 a month, and Lumo Plus is $9.99 a month billed yearly.

Claude: long documents and no ads

Anthropic's Claude fits people who work through long material and don't want advertising near it. Anthropic has said Claude will remain ad-free, with no sponsored links in conversations. Its upload limits are specific: up to 20 files in a chat, PDFs up to 1,000 pages, and visuals read in PDFs of 100 pages or fewer.

The Free plan includes memory and connectors, with limited usage measured every five hours and weekly. Pro is $20 a month, or $17 a month with $200 paid up front. Claude isn't automatically the private choice: Anthropic may train on consumer chats unless you switch off the model improvement setting, and that setting doesn't reach training runs already under way.

Google Gemini: when your day runs through Google

Google Gemini suits people whose mail, files and calendar already sit in a Google account. Google's plan page includes Gemini proofreading in Gmail on AI Plus and above, and AI Pro adds an AI Overview of your inbox in the US, along with 5 TB of storage at $19.99 a month. The free tier includes Deep Research, Canvas and Gemini Live. See our guide to Gemini connected apps for setup and Gemini vs. ChatGPT for the longer head-to-head.

Read Google's privacy hub before connecting anything. Google says it doesn't train generative AI models directly on your Gmail inbox, and that Gemini chats aren't used to show you ads. With Keep Activity, the setting that saves your Gemini chats, turned on, though, chats can train its models, and human reviewers can see some of them, along with a subset of connected-app data. Reviewed chats are kept for up to three years. Google itself asks you not to enter confidential information you wouldn't want a reviewer to see.

Perplexity: when you want to check the sources

Perplexity is built around search, so it fits research where you'll want to open the sources. Perplexity Pro advertises 10x as many citations per answer and a choice of advanced models from several AI companies, at $20 a month or $200 a year.

The free Standard plan narrows quickly past basic search: 3 Pro Searches a day, 1 Research query a month, and no advanced models or image generation. Those Pro Searches are the part to test, so run them on questions from your own work before paying.

Lumo: when privacy is the reason

Lumo, from the team behind Proton Mail, is the option here that leads with confidentiality. Proton says chats are stored with zero-access encryption so that even Proton can't read them, that Lumo keeps no logs of them, and that it never uses your data to train AI. Its code is open source, so outsiders can check those claims. You can even use it as a guest, with no account.

Lumo runs on the web, iOS and Android, and its plans sell messages, images, Projects and uploads rather than connections to your email or calendar, so check first if you need those. Free has limited messages and one Project. Plus is $9.99 a month, billed at $119.88 a year, with a 30-day money-back guarantee.

Merlin: when the problem is what happens after the chat

Merlin is our product, a Mac app built around the people in your life rather than a chat box you have to remember to open. Once your Google account is connected, a People panel names the emails you haven't answered and the contacts who have gone quiet. A Meeting Brief shows up shortly before each event, and an Inbox Watcher raises important mail as it lands. Merlin's built-in browser can also book or fill out forms for you, and it halts before a payment or a final submit.

When you ask in chat, sending mail or changing your calendar shows a card to approve first. Routines you set up run unattended, so a routine allowed to post to Slack does so with no card.

Plenty of people should skip it. Merlin only runs on a Mac, so Windows and phone users are out, and there's no web version. Setup asks for Gmail and Google Calendar, which shuts out anyone who only uses Outlook. It places no calls or texts. People signals come from email only, so someone you talk to by phone can still look neglected. It isn't the privacy pick either: it reads your mail, and our privacy policy says requests go to AI and service providers as needed. And for code on a Windows laptop or quick answers on your phone, ChatGPT is the better fit.

Merlin's free plan renews 5,000 credits every month. The first paid tier, Pro, gives 25,000 monthly credits for $29 billed monthly or $278 billed yearly, and unused credits don't carry over. Each task spends credits according to what it costs, so how far they go depends on your use.

How to choose a ChatGPT alternative

Pick the line that describes why you started looking. If none fits strongly, stay with ChatGPT.

  • Ads bother you, and everything else is fine: pay for Plus or use Free's Ads-Free option before changing tools.
  • You read long PDFs and contracts: try Claude with one of your real documents on the Free plan.
  • Everything lives in Gmail and Drive: try Gemini, after reading its Keep Activity rules.
  • You need to check where a claim came from: try Perplexity's free searches on a question you already know the answer to.
  • The chats are truly private: use Lumo, and check first whether it connects to anything else you need.
  • Your employer is on Microsoft 365: look at Microsoft 365 Copilot Business, an add-on for eligible Microsoft 365 business plans at $25.20 per user monthly, or $18 per user a month billed yearly under a first-year offer running through December 31, 2026.
  • You get good answers but still forget the follow-up, and you use a Mac: try Merlin alongside ChatGPT, since nothing about it requires cancelling. Our piece on which chores to delegate first can help you decide where to start.

How to move from ChatGPT to another assistant

You can move your ChatGPT memories to Claude or Gemini, but only Gemini accepts your chat history. Keep your ChatGPT subscription until the new setup has handled a few real tasks.

  1. Export your data. In ChatGPT, open Settings > Data controls and choose **Export**. The export can take up to 7 days to arrive, and its download link expires after 24 hours. Business and Enterprise users need to go through their workspace owner.
  2. Moving to Claude: open Settings > Your Claude, choose Start import, and follow Anthropic's steps, which have you ask ChatGPT for a list of its memories and paste that in. Remove anything sensitive first. Chat history can't be imported, and Anthropic calls the feature experimental.
  3. Moving to Gemini: use Google's import tool in Settings to add memories and upload your ChatGPT ZIP. It needs a personal Google Account, you must be 18 or older, and it isn't available in the EEA, Switzerland or the UK. Generated images and files don't come across, and Google says imported data is used to improve its services, including training.
  4. Rebuild the rest by hand. Neither import is described as covering custom GPTs, plugins or scheduled tasks, so list the ones you use before you cancel.

Cancel last

Download your export inside the 24-hour window and open the ZIP to confirm it holds what you need. Deleted chats can't be recovered through an export.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best free alternative to ChatGPT?

It depends on the job. Google Gemini's free tier includes Deep Research and Canvas, Claude's includes memory and connectors with limited usage, and Lumo can be used as a guest without an account.

Is there a ChatGPT alternative without ads?

Anthropic says Claude will remain ad-free, while Google's promise is narrower: it says Gemini chats aren't used to show you ads. Staying with ChatGPT also works: OpenAI's help page says Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu don't have ads.

Which ChatGPT alternative is the most private?

Of the assistants on this page, Lumo makes the strongest published claims: Proton says chats use zero-access encryption, aren't logged and never train AI. Those are Proton's statements; its open source code lets others check them.

Can I move my ChatGPT chats to another AI?

Gemini can import your ChatGPT chat history from an export ZIP for personal accounts outside the EEA, Switzerland and the UK. Claude imports memories only and says it can't import conversation history from another AI provider.

Is Merlin a replacement for ChatGPT?

Partly, and only on a Mac. Merlin handles chat, research, email and browser errands, and it adds tracking of who you owe a reply. ChatGPT covers Windows and phones, which Merlin doesn't, so you may want to keep both.
