AI Chatbots on Mac in 2026: ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Grok and More

Which AI chatbot belongs on your Mac? ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Copilot, Perplexity, Grok and local Llama compared: apps, shortcuts, macOS needs, prices.

The Merlin team12 min read

Most major AI chatbots now have a Mac app. ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Microsoft Copilot and Perplexity all install natively on macOS and open from a global shortcut. Grok still has no native chat app, so the best home for it is a Safari window with its own Dock icon. Meta's Llama and other open models run locally through Ollama or LM Studio, free and offline.

The hard part on a Mac isn't finding these assistants. It's deciding which one deserves the menu bar, the good shortcut and a monthly fee, when every one of them claims to do everything. This guide goes assistant by assistant: what the Mac app is like in 2026, what it needs, how to install it and the key to press, plus the built-in ChatGPT option in macOS, running Llama on your own chip, and the shortcut collisions you'll hit once you install more than one.

Every major AI chatbot's Mac app, compared

The table below compares the main AI chatbots by their Mac app, macOS requirement, default shortcut and starting paid plan, using each company's own pages where they publish the detail. Free tiers exist for all of them; the paid column is where heavier use starts.

Which AI chatbot should a Mac user choose?

Pick the AI chatbot that matches where your work already lives, then add a second only for a job the first one does badly. Paying for two flagship subscriptions on one Mac rarely makes sense. A rough way to choose:

  • You live in Google Workspace: Gemini, because the Mac app connects to Gmail, Google Drive, Docs and Calendar.
  • You write long documents, contracts or reports: Claude, which handles a whole shared window or screenshot from its quick entry box.
  • You want the broadest set of tools in one subscription: ChatGPT, now that its desktop app bundles chat, ChatGPT Work and Codex.
  • Your workday is Outlook, Teams and Word: Copilot, so your personal and work AI feel the same.
  • You mostly ask questions that need current sources: Perplexity.
  • You already pay for X Premium or SuperGrok: Grok, with grok.com saved as its own app.
  • Privacy matters more than polish: a local Llama model through Ollama or LM Studio.

I keep one paid assistant as the default and treat the rest as specialists. When a long renewal proposal landed from a client, the default assistant summarized it, and I only opened Perplexity afterward to check two market numbers it quoted, because I wanted to see where they came from before repeating them on a call. Our Gemini vs. ChatGPT guide weighs the two biggest names on features and prices.

ChatGPT on Mac: the new desktop app and ChatGPT Classic

ChatGPT on Mac now comes in two apps. On July 9, 2026, OpenAI turned its Codex desktop app into the new ChatGPT desktop app and renamed the original native Mac app "ChatGPT Classic", as Daring Fireball reported. The new app brings ChatGPT Work and Codex to your computer and can use context from your email, screenshots and files, according to OpenAI's download page.

Which one you want depends on what you use ChatGPT for. The new app is built for handing off tasks, and Daring Fireball notes it is a much bigger download (1.5 GB against 159 MB for Classic). Classic still looks and feels more like a native Mac app for plain conversation. Both can be installed side by side.

How to install ChatGPT on a Mac

  1. Go to chatgpt.com/download and click the desktop download.
  2. Open the downloaded file and install the app.
  3. Launch ChatGPT and log in to your OpenAI account.
  4. When macOS asks for Screen Recording or Accessibility access, allow only what you need for the features you plan to use.

One change to know about: after a July update, the ⌥Space companion window started opening Codex instead of a quick ChatGPT conversation, which users raised on OpenAI's community forum. OpenAI support said it would pass the request to the product team. If you mostly want quick questions answered, check what ⌥Space opens on your copy before building a habit around it.

Prices start at $8 a month for ChatGPT Go and $20 for Plus, with Pro above that, per MacRumors. That report also says OpenAI planned to test ads on the free and Go tiers, while Plus and higher stay ad-free.

Claude on Mac: install it and set up quick entry

Claude's Mac app runs on macOS 13 (Ventura) or later and is a free download, per Anthropic's install guide. Free accounts can chat in it. Cowork, the mode that works through longer multi-step tasks in folders you connect, is for paid plans only. Claude's pricing page puts Pro at $20 monthly, dropping to $200 for the year if you pay up front.

  1. Go to claude.ai/download and click Download under macOS, as Anthropic's steps describe.
  2. Open the downloaded file to install it.
  3. Launch Claude from your Applications folder and sign in.
  4. When the app offers quick entry shortcuts, check the box and click Continue.
  5. Double-tap Option in any app to test it.

Quick entry is where the Mac app earns its place over the browser tab. After you double-tap Option, you can drag over part of the screen to attach a screenshot, or click an app window to share its contents, according to Anthropic's quick entry guide. Quick entry asks for the Accessibility permission; screenshots and window sharing need Screen Recording.

Voice is opt-in. Pressing Caps Lock starts dictation once you turn the voice shortcut on, which requires Sonoma or newer. To change either shortcut, open Settings → Desktop app and pick a new Quick access shortcut (double-tap Option, Option + Space or a custom key) or Voice shortcut.

When I had a 30-page vendor agreement open in Preview, I double-tapped Option, clicked the Preview window and asked which clauses renew automatically. That beat exporting the PDF and dragging it into a chat. If Claude isn't the right fit, our Claude alternatives page sorts out which Claude product you'd be leaving.

Gemini on Mac: Google's native app

Google released a native Gemini app for Mac in April 2026. It's free for all Gemini users and needs macOS 15 or later, per Google's announcement, and the download page says it runs on Apple silicon. Press ⌥Space for a mini chat over whatever you're doing, or ⌥⇧Space for the full window; both shortcuts can be changed in the app's settings.

The Mac app's best trick is context. Pressing both ⌘ keys shares your screen so Gemini can answer about what's in front of you, and the app connects to Gmail, Google Drive, Docs and Calendar, according to Google's Gemini for Mac page. It can also dictate into other apps and run Tasks in the background, asking for approval at each action. Some features need a Google AI subscription.

  1. Go to gemini.google/mac and download the app.
  2. Open the download, install Gemini and launch it.
  3. Choose the Google Account you use for Gemini.
  4. Press ⌥Space to open the mini chat and ask your first question.

For a walk through Gemini itself, rather than the Mac app, see our beginner's guide to Gemini.

Microsoft Copilot on Mac

Microsoft Copilot's Mac app is a free download from Apple's Mac App Store. It requires an Apple silicon Mac running Sonoma (macOS 14) or newer, so Intel Macs can't install it, as MacRumors reported at launch. It includes a shortcut launcher for quick questions, and paid tiers unlock more.

Copilot makes most sense on a Mac when the rest of your work week is Microsoft: Outlook, Teams, Word. If your employer gives you Microsoft 365 Copilot, that's a separate work product, and your IT department may already have a preference, so check before installing the personal one alongside it.

Perplexity on Mac: answers with sources, and an agent

Perplexity replaced its older Mac app in May 2026 with a new one built around Personal Computer, an agent that can work across your files, native Mac apps and the web, per 9to5Mac. The app needs macOS 15 Sequoia or later, and pressing both ⌘ keys opens it from anywhere, according to Perplexity's page. The download is free, but Personal Computer needs a paid plan, Pro or Max, per MacRumors.

Perplexity's strength is still the plain search answer with sources you can click. Per Perplexity, the agent works on folders you connect and asks for on-device authorization before sensitive steps, so connect a working folder rather than your whole home folder. Our Perplexity alternatives page covers when another tool fits better.

Grok on Mac: turn grok.com into a Dock app

Grok has no official native chat app for macOS as of late August 2026, according to MacDailyNews. xAI's Grok Bot app for Mac is a separate agent product with limited access, not a chat app, and the same report advises treating any other "Grok for Mac" download as unofficial.

For Grok, the tidiest setup is saving grok.com from Safari as a web app, which gives it its own Dock icon and window. Apple's Safari guide explains the steps:

  1. In Safari, visit grok.com.
  2. Sign in to your account.
  3. Click the Share button in the toolbar, then choose Add to Dock.
  4. Click Add. Grok now opens from the Dock and from Applications.

The same trick works for any chatbot without a Mac app, including Meta AI and Mistral's Le Chat. The Grok alternatives page covers what to use if you're leaving the X bundle.

Use ChatGPT inside macOS with Apple Intelligence

macOS can hand some Siri requests to ChatGPT without the ChatGPT app installed. The switch lives in System Settings, and a ChatGPT account is optional, per Apple's guide.

  1. In System Settings, select Siri in the sidebar.
  2. Click ChatGPT, then Set Up, and follow the steps. With Siri AI (Beta), click Set Up Extensions, click ChatGPT and turn on Use Extension.
  3. Choose whether to sign in with a ChatGPT account.

Without an account, Apple obscures your IP address and OpenAI isn't allowed to store your requests or use them for training, Apple says. Sign in and your ChatGPT account's own settings apply instead, which is useful if you want those chats in your history. I leave it signed out. What I ask Siri to pass along is throwaway, a conversion or a quick definition, and I don't need any of it in a chat history.

How to run Llama and other open models on a Mac

Meta's Llama and other open models run on your Mac's own chip, so prompts never leave the machine and there's no monthly fee. Ollama supports Sonoma (version 14) and newer; Apple silicon Macs get GPU acceleration, while Intel Macs run on the CPU only, per Ollama's macOS docs.

  1. Download Ollama.dmg from ollama.com, open it and drag Ollama into Applications.
  2. Start Ollama. If it asks to link its command-line tool in /usr/local/bin, allow it.
  3. Open Terminal and type ollama run llama3.2 to download and start Llama 3.2.
  4. When the download finishes, type a question at the prompt.

Llama 3.2 comes in 1B and 3B sizes, a 1.3 GB and 2.0 GB download, according to Ollama's library. Small models like these suit rewording and short summaries; for harder reasoning, the larger cloud assistants above are the safer pick.

If you'd rather not touch Terminal, LM Studio gives you a chat window and a model browser. It runs only on Apple silicon with macOS 14.0 or newer, leaves Intel Macs out, and recommends 16GB of memory or more, per LM Studio's requirements. When I wrote up feedback for a teammate's review, I drafted it in a local model first, so their name and the details stayed on my Mac.

How to stop AI shortcuts from colliding on your Mac

Only one app can own a keyboard shortcut at a time, and AI apps love the same few. Gemini and ChatGPT both use ⌥Space, Claude offers it as an alternative, and Merlin, our Mac app, opens its Companion panel with ⌥Space by default. There's a second clash too: Gemini shares your screen with both ⌘ keys, the same keys that open Perplexity's agent.

  • Gemini: change the mini chat and full chat shortcuts in the app's settings.
  • Claude: Settings → Desktop app → Quick access shortcut, per Anthropic.
  • ChatGPT: look for the companion window shortcut in the app's settings, and check what it opens after each update.
  • Merlin: click the gear icon, then All settings → Companion, and choose another shortcut.

Give your main assistant the easy key and move the rest to something deliberate. I keep ⌥Space for the one I use all day and don't bother with shortcuts for the others; the Dock is fast enough for a second opinion.

Before you paste work into any AI chatbot

Every AI chatbot on this list is a cloud service except the local models, so check four things before pasting in client or company material:

  • Training settings. Each consumer service has its own data controls; look in the app's settings before you share anything sensitive.
  • Screen and window access. Screen Recording permission lets an app see what's on screen when you share it. Review the list in System Settings → Privacy & Security after installing a few.
  • Your employer's rules. Many companies approve one assistant for work data. Use that one for work and keep personal accounts for personal tasks.
  • Connected folders and accounts. Agents that act on files or email should get a single folder or the accounts they need, not everything.

An assistant that already knows your day

Merlin is built for the parts of work a chatbot can't see: your inbox, your calendar and your files. Ask it to find the thread with a client's latest numbers or to move tomorrow's 3 p.m., and it works from your actual accounts. Request an email or a meeting change in the chat and Merlin lays out the draft for you to edit; it goes nowhere until you approve it.
