Claude Alternatives in 2026: Start With Which Claude You Mean

The short answer

Claude suits anyone who wants one subscription for chat, coding, design and desk work on a computer or phone. Look at ChatGPT or Gemini for different limits and plans, Cursor or GitHub Copilot for editor-first coding, Figma Make for design rooted in Figma, and Merlin for mail and relationship follow-through on a Mac.

We make Merlin, one of the tools on this page. Every claim about other tools is checked against their own sites.

The Merlin team10 min read

Anthropic's Claude is no longer one product. A single subscription now covers a chat assistant, a coding agent called Claude Code, a desk agent called Cowork and a canvas called Claude Design. The search for a "Claude alternative" therefore has four different answers, and the first useful step is naming the job you want done differently.

Use the table to find your job, then skip to that section. Merlin's section also spells out where Claude wins.

What Claude does well, and who should stay

Claude is the sensible default when two or more of its jobs matter to you, because one plan pays for all of them. Anthropic's pricing page puts memory, connectors, Artifacts and Claude Design on the Free plan. Pro costs $20 billed monthly, or $17 a month billed annually ($200 up front), and adds Claude Code and Research. Max is $100 a month and Ultra is $200 a month. Team seats start at $25 a month, or $20 billed annually.

Claude also reaches more devices than some rivals on this page. Anthropic's download page offers Mac and Windows apps, a Linux beta and an iPhone app, and Anthropic's help center covers the Android app. Claude Code runs in a terminal, an IDE, Slack or on the web. Cowork works in the folders and tools you pick, and can run scheduled tasks unattended.

Claude can act on your email, too. The Google Workspace connector can search, draft, send and reply in Gmail and edit Google Calendar events, with your approval on each action by default. If that covers your week, you may not need anything else.

Why people leave Claude for an alternative

The reasons that keep coming up are shared limits, a terminal-first coding setup, a design workflow based elsewhere, and a wish for an assistant that starts work without being asked. Limits are the easiest to explain.

Claude's limits are one pool. Anthropic's limits guide describes a five-hour window that starts with your first message, plus weekly limits, and counts claude.ai, Claude Code and Claude Desktop together. Claude Design draws on the same limits, and the Cowork page says Cowork uses them faster than chat. A long coding afternoon can therefore leave less for everything else that week.

Data handling comes up too. On Free, Pro and Max, model training depends on your Model Improvement setting, and flagged conversations can be reviewed regardless. With training on, de-identified chats may be kept for up to 5 years. Team plans don't train on your content by default. If training is the worry, turn off Model Improvement in your settings before you decide.

Three fixes that don't involve switching

Turn on usage credits, which keep Pro, Max and Ultra working past a limit at standard API rates, up to a monthly spend cap you set. Lower the effort level or start fresh conversations, since both affect how fast limits go. Or move from Pro to Max, which lists 5x Pro usage for $100 a month.

Replacing Claude as your everyday assistant: ChatGPT or Gemini

ChatGPT is the nearest match to Claude, because it pairs chat with a coding agent and a delegation mode under one plan. Gemini is the better fit when your work already sits in Google's apps.

ChatGPT

OpenAI's plan page lists Free, Go at $8 a month, Plus at $20 a month and Pro at $100, $200 or $500 a month. Business is $25 per user monthly, or $20 billed annually. Plus includes Codex, OpenAI's coding agent. Moving from Claude Pro to ChatGPT Plus saves nothing at $20, so the reason to move is how usage works: OpenAI says its limits aren't fixed, that Work and Codex share them, and that Pro plans currently have no five-hour limit.

ChatGPT Work is the Cowork counterpart. It takes on tasks using your files and connected tools, can use local files and apps in the desktop app, and repeats jobs through scheduled tasks. You can tell it to stop before sending anything. It fits someone who wants Claude's breadth from a different vendor. We compare the two big assistants in more detail in Gemini vs. ChatGPT.

Gemini

Google's US plan page lists Free, Google AI Plus at $4.99 a month, Google AI Pro at $19.99 a month and Google AI Ultra from $99.99 a month. Google AI Pro puts Gemini in Gmail, Docs and Vids and includes Deep Research, so the assistant sits in the apps instead of connecting to them from outside.

Gemini's Tasks feature, previously called Spark, handles delegated jobs and needs Google AI Pro or Ultra. Google says it is designed to ask for review before sending email. Tasks isn't available in the European Economic Area, the UK, Switzerland or Nigeria, which rules it out for some readers.

Replacing Claude Code: Cursor or GitHub Copilot

Cursor and GitHub Copilot suit developers who want AI inside the editor, with diffs and completions in view, instead of steering an agent from a terminal. Claude Code does have VS Code and JetBrains extensions, so try those first if the terminal is your only complaint.

Cursor has a Free plan, Plus at $8 a month, Premium at $30, Super at $100 and Ultra at $200. Plus offers Grok models only, and Cursor's model docs say Claude and other third-party models are billed separately at API list price from Premium up. Staying on Claude models inside Cursor is possible, but that usage sits on top of the plan price.

GitHub Copilot is the lower-cost way to keep Claude models in your editor: Free with 2,000 completions a month, Pro at $10 per user a month, Pro+ at $39 and Max at $100. Copilot's model list includes Anthropic Claude, and Pro can run third-party agents such as Claude Code and Codex, so moving doesn't have to mean dropping Claude.

Replacing Claude Design: Figma Make

Figma Make is the natural alternative when your team's designs already live in Figma. Figma describes Make's output as code-backed and visually editable, so you can move between prompt, code and canvas.

Claude Design has its own strengths. It is included on every Claude plan, and exports to PDF, PPTX, Google Slides and HTML, sends to tools such as Canva, and hands off to Claude Code. For decks and one-off prototypes it can be enough on its own.

Figma's FAQ says Make is on Starter with limits, and that a paid Full seat gets the whole product, including sharing and publishing. Figma's pricing page lists Starter at 500 AI credits a month, capped at 150 a day, and a Professional Full seat at $16 a month with 3,000 credits. Check the billing switch on that page before you budget.

Replacing Cowork's mail and people work on a Mac: Merlin

Merlin lives on your Mac and centers on your mail, calendar and the people in them, so it suits someone who wants an assistant to notice things, not only finish what it's handed. Claude's connector reads your data when you ask, and Anthropic's scheduling guide describes recurring and on-demand runs. A Merlin routine can also fire when an email or calendar event matches a condition.

  • People. One panel tracks replies you owe, contacts who have gone quiet and upcoming birthdays, with a record per person.
  • Meetings. Merlin records calls from your Mac's microphone and system audio. Recording is free, transcription is paid, and audio is saved on your Mac (paid transcription uploads it). Transcripts and notes live on your account. Claude's plan page doesn't list a meeting recorder. Dedicated note takers get their own roundup of AI meeting tools.
  • Daily watchers. Built-in routines send a morning digest, flag important mail and brief you before meetings.
  • Web errands. Browser tasks book, order and fill forms, then stop for your approval at the point of payment or a final submit.

The approval rules are worth reading closely. Asked in chat, Merlin puts each email or calendar change on a card you edit and confirm. Routines run unattended, so one with Slack or email access acts with no card at all. Our guide to delegating to an assistant covers what's safe to give away.

Claude is the better choice in several cases. Merlin has no Windows, Linux or phone app, and Claude has all of them. Setting Merlin up takes Gmail and Google Calendar, so a Microsoft 365 shop should look at Claude's Microsoft 365 connection instead. Merlin doesn't make phone calls. It can open coding tasks on a repository, but anyone choosing a daily coding tool should start with the tools above. It also costs more to start: Merlin Pro runs $29 a month for 25,000 credits, against $20 for Claude Pro. The free tier gives 5,000 monthly credits without a credit card, and credits are spent by what each task really costs, so heavy use burns faster.

Which Claude alternative to choose

  • You hit limits a few times a month: stay on Claude and turn on usage credits.
  • You hit limits constantly and use chat most: compare ChatGPT Plus and Pro.
  • You code all day in an editor: start with GitHub Copilot's Free plan, then try Cursor.
  • Your day runs on Gmail and Docs: try Gemini on Google AI Pro.
  • Your designs live in Figma: try Figma Make on Starter.
  • You're behind on Gmail follow-ups and work on a Mac: add Merlin's free tier beside your current subscription.
  • You use Windows, Linux or mostly your phone, and want one plan for everything: keep Claude.

How to move your history out of Claude

Claude lets you export both your data and your memory, though neither moves automatically into another product. For conversations, open Settings > Privacy on the web or desktop app and choose the export option; a download link arrives by email and expires after 24 hours. Mobile apps can't run it. For memory, go to Settings > Your Claude and choose Manage next to Your memory, or ask Claude to print its memories word for word, then save the text. Rebuild any scheduled tasks by hand in the new tool.

Find the replies slipping past you

Link your Google account on a Mac and Merlin's People panel lists the threads you still have to answer and the contacts who have drifted. No credit card is needed to start, and your Claude subscription can stay exactly as it is while you try it.

Frequently asked questions

Can I replace Claude for free?

Yes, for most jobs. ChatGPT and Gemini both have $0 plans for everyday chat, GitHub Copilot Free covers 2,000 code completions a month, and Figma's Starter plan includes Figma Make with limits. Merlin Free suits Mac users on Gmail who want help with mail and people.

Is ChatGPT cheaper than Claude?

ChatGPT Plus and Claude Pro both cost $20 billed monthly, though Claude Pro falls to $17 a month on annual billing. ChatGPT also has a lower tier, Go, at $8 a month. Claude's Free plan is the only cheaper Claude option.

Can I replace Claude Code and still use Claude models?

Yes. Cursor offers Claude models from its Premium plan at API list price, billed on top of the plan. GitHub Copilot lists Anthropic Claude among its models and can run Claude Code as a third-party agent from Pro.

Is Merlin a replacement for Claude?

Only for part of it. Merlin covers mail, calendar, people, meetings, routines and web errands on a Mac, and it needs Gmail and Google Calendar to set up. If you need Windows, phone apps or a dedicated coding agent, Claude is the better fit.
