How to Get Unblocked From ChatGPT in 2026: A Guide for Mac Users

Blocked from ChatGPT on your Mac? Find out if it's your country, a work or school network, Screen Time, a flagged IP or your account, and the fix for each.

The Merlin team10 min read

To get unblocked from ChatGPT, first work out who did the blocking. A "Sorry, you have been blocked" page usually means your IP address was flagged, so switch off your VPN or change networks. A blocked work or school Mac needs IT's approval. A suspended account needs an appeal to OpenAI, and an unsupported country can't be fixed from your side.

Being shut out of a tool you use every day is irritating, and most guides answer it with "just use a VPN." That advice fixes one kind of block, breaks OpenAI's rules for another, and can get you in trouble with an employer for a third. This guide sorts the blocks by who put them there, then gives the fix that actually belongs to each one, with the steps on a Mac.

Why is ChatGPT blocked for me? Find your block first

ChatGPT can be blocked by five different parties: OpenAI's security filter, your network's owner, your Mac's administrator, OpenAI's country rules or OpenAI's account team. The words on the screen usually tell you which one it is. Match what you see below, then jump to that section.

Before any of that, open OpenAI's status page and check the Login and Conversations rows. An outage can look a lot like a block, and it's the one problem you can't fix and don't need to.

How to fix "Sorry, you have been blocked" on ChatGPT

"Sorry, you have been blocked" is a security page, not a verdict on your account. Cloudflare's documentation says error 1020 means a security feature set up by the website owner blocked the request. On chatgpt.com the usual trigger is the IP address you're connecting from, which you may share with many strangers on a VPN server, a hotel network or a relay.

I was at an airport gate, about to tidy up a client deck, when chatgpt.com showed me exactly this page. Moving from the airport Wi-Fi to my phone's hotspot fixed it within a minute, which told me the problem was the network and not my account. On your own Mac, try these from the top and reload after each one:

  1. Disconnect your VPN from the VPN app's menu bar icon, then reload chatgpt.com with Command-R.
  2. Pause iCloud Private Relay. Open System Settings, click your name, then iCloud > Private Relay, and choose Turn Off Until Tomorrow. Apple says it turns itself back on within 24 hours.
  3. Turn off Limit IP address tracking for one network, which stops Private Relay on just that network. Go to System Settings > Network > Wi-Fi, click Details next to the network, and switch off Limit IP address tracking, per Apple.
  4. Switch networks if you're on public Wi-Fi like a café or an airport: pick another network you're allowed to use, such as your iPhone's Personal Hotspot, from the Wi-Fi icon in the menu bar.
  5. Still blocked? Take a screenshot of the page with Shift-Command-3, including the Ray ID at the bottom. Cloudflare suggests giving the site owner that screenshot so they can find the rule that fired, so attach it when you contact OpenAI support.

Changing networks is fine on your own Mac, not on someone else's

Switching from a café's Wi-Fi to your phone is just choosing a different connection. Doing the same on a company laptop, or on your employer's network, to get around a block IT put there is a different thing, covered in the next section.

ChatGPT blocked by your employer or school: what you can do

When ChatGPT is blocked by your employer or school, the right fix is to ask for access, not to route around the block. Organizations block AI tools for real reasons: data leaving the company, exam rules, contracts with clients. A VPN, proxy or hotspot used to dodge that policy can break the acceptable-use agreement you signed, and that's a worse conversation than the one you were avoiding.

Check whether your Mac is managed

A company or school Mac usually carries management profiles that set its network and web rules. To see them, choose Apple menu > System Settings > General > Device Management, near the bottom of the General list. Apple notes that if you can't remove a profile, your Mac may be a managed computer, and only its administrator can change it. If you see profiles there, the block is policy, and IT is who you talk to.

How to ask IT to unblock ChatGPT

A short, specific request gets a faster yes than "can you unblock ChatGPT?" Say what you need it for, show you've thought about company data, and offer the approved route. OpenAI's Business plans include admin controls and say business data isn't used to train its models, which is often what IT needs to hear. If the answer is no, ask what the approved AI tool is instead.

Request to IT
Subject: Request: access to ChatGPT for drafting and research

Hi team,

chatgpt.com is blocked on the office network and my work Mac. I'd like to use it for first drafts of client summaries and for research. I won't paste client names, contracts or anything marked confidential into it.

If personal ChatGPT accounts aren't allowed, is there an approved option, such as a company ChatGPT Business workspace or another AI tool you've already cleared?

If you do open access, OpenAI's network guide lists the domains and WebSocket settings ChatGPT needs, so it works properly once allowed.

Thanks,
[Your name]

If IT does allow ChatGPT, send them OpenAI's network recommendations. The guide lists the domains to allow, including *.chatgpt.com, *.openai.com and *.oaistatic.com, and explains that WebSocket traffic over port 443 must get through, or replies can stall halfway. When a new client's network blocked chatgpt.com during an on-site workshop, I asked their IT lead rather than tethering around it, and the answer was a quick "use our approved assistant instead," which was the right call for their data.

For students, the same rule holds. If your school blocks ChatGPT on its network or devices, ask your teacher or the IT office whether there's an approved way to use it for coursework. Some schools license an education plan; OpenAI lists one on its business page.

ChatGPT blocked by Screen Time on a family Mac

On a shared or family Mac, Screen Time's web filter can block chatgpt.com in Safari without any network involved. Apple's Screen Time guide puts the setting under Apple menu > System Settings > Screen Time: pick the family member, click Content & Privacy, then App Store, Media, Web, & Games. Under web content there are three choices:

  • Unrestricted Access: any website opens.
  • Limit Adult Websites: blocks many adult sites, and Customize lets you add sites to an allowed or restricted list. chatgpt.com may have been added to the restricted list here.
  • Allowed Websites Only: only sites on the allowed list open, so chatgpt.com is blocked unless someone added it.

I once set up a family member's Mac with Allowed Websites Only and forgot that it blocks everything not on the list, ChatGPT included. If you're the parent, add chatgpt.com under Customize if you want to allow it. If you're the one blocked, the person with the Screen Time passcode is the only one who can change it, and that's by design.

Is ChatGPT available in your country?

ChatGPT only works in the countries and territories OpenAI supports, and using it from elsewhere can cost you your account. OpenAI's supported countries list warns that accessing or offering access to its services outside the listed places may get an account blocked or suspended. Countries including China, Russia, Iran and North Korea are not on the list, and Hong Kong isn't either.

Travel is the common case for most readers. OpenAI's help article on traveling says an account created in a supported country can have trouble logging in from an unsupported one, and suggests clearing your browser's cache and cookies, trying a different browser or a private window, and then contacting support. On a Mac, a private window is File > New Private Window in Safari or Command-Shift-N in Chrome.

If you live somewhere ChatGPT isn't offered, there's no honest workaround. A VPN that makes you appear to be in a supported country is exactly the access OpenAI says can get the account blocked, and payment from an unsupported country is a separate red flag, according to OpenAI's page on unsupported regions. The page also says OpenAI will help you cancel a subscription you can no longer use. The better move is a different assistant that is offered where you live; our ChatGPT alternatives page compares the main ones.

Your ChatGPT account was deactivated or suspended

A deactivated or suspended ChatGPT account is blocked by OpenAI itself, so only OpenAI can lift it. OpenAI's Terms of Use say it can restrict, suspend or terminate access when it finds a breach, and that you can file an appeal if you believe that happened in error.

To appeal, start with the deactivation email. OpenAI asks you to use the appeal link in that email so the request reaches the right team. If you can't find the email, use OpenAI's appeal form. Keep the appeal short and factual:

  • The email address on the account and how you sign in (Google, Microsoft, Apple or email).
  • Your user ID or organization ID if you have them.
  • What you were using ChatGPT for, in a sentence or two.
  • Anything that could explain a false flag: a shared office network, a VPN you've since turned off, or signs that someone else used your login.

Two habits trip people up most. The Terms say you may not share your account credentials or make your account available to anyone else, so a team sharing one login is a real risk. They also forbid getting around rate limits or restrictions, which is why making a second account to dodge a ban tends to end badly. While the appeal is open, don't sign up again with another email.

Hit a ChatGPT usage limit? That isn't a block

A message that you've reached your limit means your plan's allowance is used up, not that you're blocked. OpenAI's pricing page says the Free plan has unlimited text chats subject to abuse guardrails, but only limited access to uploads, image creation, voice, deep research and more, and that paid plans such as Go, Plus and Pro raise those limits. Wait for the limit to reset, switch to a different feature, or change plans if you hit the wall every week.

If ChatGPT simply won't load or keeps throwing errors rather than blocking you, that's a different problem with different fixes. Our guide to ChatGPT not working on a Mac walks through the app, Safari, Chrome and sign-in loops.

What not to do when ChatGPT is blocked

The fastest-looking fixes are often the ones that turn a temporary block into a permanent one. Skip these:

  • Free proxies and "ChatGPT unblocked" mirror sites. You'd be typing your prompts, and sometimes your password, into a site run by someone you don't know.
  • VPN hopping to look like you're in a supported country. OpenAI's own list says that kind of access may get the account blocked or suspended.
  • Tunneling around an employer's or school's block. Even if it works, you've broken a policy you agreed to, often on a laptop that isn't yours.
  • New accounts after a ban. The Terms forbid circumventing restrictions, so a second account can turn one appeal into two lost accounts.

Keep working while ChatGPT is blocked

An IP flag can clear the moment you change networks, while an appeal or an IT ticket takes longer, and the work in front of you won't wait. Keep a second assistant ready for those gaps, ideally one your workplace already allows. Our Gemini vs. ChatGPT comparison is a good starting point for picking one.

A second assistant on your Mac

Merlin is a desktop assistant with a chat of its own, so you can paste in a draft you saved from ChatGPT and keep going there while an appeal or an IT ticket is pending. Option-Space brings Merlin up over whatever app you're in. At work, use it only where your company allows it.

How to avoid getting blocked from ChatGPT again

  • Use one sign-in method for ChatGPT, every time, and keep your login to yourself.
  • Turn your VPN off for chatgpt.com if you see repeated security pages, or pick a less crowded server.
  • Ask IT before using ChatGPT on a work Mac, and keep the answer in writing.
  • Before travel, check OpenAI's supported countries list for where you're going.
  • Bookmark status.openai.com so an outage never looks like a ban.

Frequently asked questions

Why does ChatGPT say "Sorry, you have been blocked"?

That page comes from a security filter in front of chatgpt.com, usually reacting to your IP address rather than your account. Turn off your VPN or iCloud Private Relay, or switch to another network you're allowed to use, and reload the page.

How do I unblock ChatGPT at school or work?

Ask your IT department or school for access, and explain what you need it for. Using a VPN, proxy or hotspot to get around the block can break your acceptable-use agreement, so ask for an approved option instead.

Can I use a VPN to access ChatGPT in an unsupported country?

No. OpenAI says accessing its services from outside its supported countries and territories may get your account blocked or suspended, so a VPN puts the account at risk.

How do I appeal a ChatGPT account ban?

Use the appeal link in the deactivation email from OpenAI, or OpenAI's appeal form at openai.com/form/appeal if you can't find the email. Include your account email, how you sign in and a short explanation.

How long does a ChatGPT block last?

OpenAI doesn't publish a fixed time. An IP-based security block often clears as soon as you change networks, while an account suspension lasts until OpenAI reviews your appeal.

Why is ChatGPT blocked in Safari but not Chrome on my Mac?

On a family or shared Mac, Screen Time's web content filter applies to Safari, so a restricted or allowed-only list can block chatgpt.com there. Check System Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy > App Store, Media, Web, & Games.
