How to Use ChatGPT on a Mac in 2026: Setup and Top Tips

New to ChatGPT on a Mac? Install the app, open it anywhere with Option-Space, let it read your apps, write better prompts and keep work chats private.

To use ChatGPT on a Mac, sign in at chatgpt.com in any browser, or install the ChatGPT desktop app from chatgpt.com/download (it needs macOS 14 Sonoma or later). Press Option-Space to open a quick chat over any app, give ChatGPT context and a clear format in every prompt, and check important answers before you rely on them.

My earliest go at ChatGPT was a one-line question typed into a browser tab. A generic page of text came back, and I closed the tab thinking the whole thing was overrated. The tool wasn't the problem; my question was. This guide covers the setup choices that matter on a Mac this year (there are now two ChatGPT apps, plus Siri), then the habits that turn ChatGPT from a novelty into something you open every day.

Which way should you use ChatGPT on a Mac?

There are four ways in: the website, the new ChatGPT desktop app, the older ChatGPT Classic app, or through Siri. They all reach the same ChatGPT account, so your chats follow you between the website and the apps. Pick by how often you'll use it and what you want it to see.

My take: start in the browser for a day, and install the app once you notice you're opening the tab every hour. The app earns its place with the Option-Space shortcut and its ability to see what's on your screen, both covered below.

How to install the ChatGPT app on a Mac

The ChatGPT Mac app installs from chatgpt.com/download, and OpenAI's download page says it picks the right installer for Apple silicon or Intel. OpenAI's system requirements are macOS 14 Sonoma or later on an M1 or newer Mac, or an Intel processor, and OpenAI says it won't release a version for older systems.

  1. Check your macOS version under Apple menu > About This Mac.
  2. Visit chatgpt.com/download and download the Mac installer.
  3. Open the disk image and drag ChatGPT into your Applications folder.
  4. Open ChatGPT from Applications or Spotlight (Command-Space) and log in using the same method you use on the website (Google, Microsoft, Apple or email).
  5. Right-click its Dock icon and choose Options > Keep in Dock if you want it one click away.

The new app may replace your old one

OpenAI's move guide says the new app "may install alongside" the existing one, but John Gruber of Daring Fireball reported that running the installer with the old app closed replaced it instead, as Michael Tsai's roundup also notes. To hold on to ChatGPT Classic, quit it first and check your Applications folder after installing.

If you already use the Codex app, OpenAI's Work and Codex article says updating it turns it into the new ChatGPT desktop app. Your chats live in your ChatGPT account rather than on the Mac, so switching apps doesn't lose them.

Which ChatGPT plan do you need?

ChatGPT's Free plan is enough to learn the basics, and you only need a paid plan once you hit its limits regularly. Paid tiers run from $8 a month for Go through $20 for Plus to Pro from $100, according to OpenAI's Go announcement, its pricing page and its Pro tiers article.

ChatGPT plans for one person

Plan

Price per month

What it adds

Free

$0

Chat plus limited image creation, voice, deep research, memory and Work on desktop, per the pricing page

Go

$8

More messages, uploads and image creation than Free; may include ads

Plus

$20

Advanced reasoning models, projects, scheduled tasks, custom GPTs and more Work and Codex use

Pro

$100, $200 or $500

Three usage tiers with the most reasoning, Work and Codex use, per OpenAI

For a team, look at ChatGPT Business instead of individual Plus seats. Business prompts, responses and files stay out of OpenAI's model training unless the organization agrees otherwise, which matters once colleagues paste in client work (data controls).

How to open ChatGPT from anywhere with Option-Space

Pressing Option-Space opens a small ChatGPT window on top of the app you're using, without switching windows. OpenAI's Chat Bar guide says Option-Space is the default and that you can change it, and the desktop release notes call this Quick Chat in the new app. You can drag the window anywhere on screen or open it from the ChatGPT icon in the menu bar.

I use it mostly for quick rewrites. I copy a paragraph from an email I'm unsure about, press Option-Space, paste it and ask for a shorter version that keeps the ask in the first line. Then I close the window and I'm back in Mail without having touched another app.

Change the Option-Space shortcut

Option-Space is popular, and launchers and other assistants often claim it too. If pressing it opens the wrong thing, change ChatGPT's shortcut in ChatGPT > Settings > Keyboard Shortcut, the path OpenAI gives. Menu names can shift between the new app and ChatGPT Classic, so look under the app's Settings if that exact path isn't there.

Send ChatGPT a screenshot of a window

ChatGPT can look at a window instead of you describing it. Click the + in the Chat Bar, hover over Take Screenshot and pick an open window, as OpenAI's screenshot guide shows. You can also type an open app's name in the bar to capture its window. This is how I ask about a confusing chart in a spreadsheet: one screenshot, one question.

How to let ChatGPT read your Mac apps

ChatGPT for macOS can read the text in some of your open apps, so you don't have to copy and paste. OpenAI's Work with Apps guide lists text editors (Apple Notes, Notion, TextEdit and Quip), code editors (Xcode, Script Editor, VS Code and its relatives, and JetBrains tools) and terminals (Terminal, iTerm, Warp and Prompt), where it reads the last 200 lines of open panes.

  1. Open ChatGPT > Settings > Work with Apps and turn the feature on.
  2. Click Manage Apps to see which of your installed apps are compatible and what each needs.
  3. When macOS asks, allow ChatGPT in System Settings > Privacy & Security > Accessibility. OpenAI says most apps depend on this, and turning it off stops the feature for them.
  4. For VS Code, install the companion extension OpenAI links from the same guide.
  5. Open the app you want help with, bring up ChatGPT, and ask about what's in it.

In the new desktop app, ChatGPT Work can also use local files and desktop apps with your permission, where your plan allows it (OpenAI). Grant it the one folder a task needs, not your whole home folder. A ChatGPT that can see everything is also a ChatGPT that can misread everything.

How to use ChatGPT with Siri on a Mac

macOS 27 lets Siri hand requests to ChatGPT without opening any ChatGPT app. Apple's steps: open System Settings, click Siri, click ChatGPT, then Set Up, and work through the setup screens. If your Mac uses the newer Siri AI (Beta), the path is different: go to Set Up Extensions, choose ChatGPT and turn on Use Extension.

You don't need a ChatGPT account for this. Apple obscures your IP address from OpenAI (it shares only a general location), and without an account OpenAI must not store your requests unless the law requires it, or use them to train its models. Sign in only if you want those requests saved to your ChatGPT history; your ChatGPT account's own settings then apply.

How to write ChatGPT prompts that get useful answers

A useful ChatGPT prompt says who the answer is for, what you want, the context ChatGPT can't guess, and the format you want back. The one-line question that disappointed me on day one was missing all four. ChatGPT fills gaps with the average answer, and the average answer is rarely the one you need.

These are the habits that changed my results the most:

  • Paste the real material. The email thread, the meeting agenda, the draft. ChatGPT is far better at editing your text than inventing it.
  • Name the reader. "For a client who's annoyed about a late delivery" gets a different tone from "for my team".
  • Ask for a format. A table, five bullets, a subject line plus three sentences. Length limits work well too.
  • Let it ask first. End with "Ask me up to three questions before you answer" when the job is fuzzy.
  • Push back in the same chat. "Shorter, less formal, keep the deadline" beats starting over, because ChatGPT keeps the conversation as context.
  • Start a fresh chat for a new task. Old context from a different job quietly bends new answers.

The night ahead of a client call, I paste the agenda in and ask for the questions the client is most likely to push back on. It's the prompt I reuse most, so it lives in a note I copy from:

prompt-call-prep.txt
I have a call with a client tomorrow about [topic].
Here's the agenda and the last email thread: [paste]

Act as a skeptical client reading this.
List the 3 questions you'd most likely push back on,
and for each one give me a one-sentence answer I could say out loud.
Keep it under 200 words. Ask me anything you need first.

How to make ChatGPT remember how you work

ChatGPT can carry your preferences into every chat in three ways: custom instructions, memory and projects. Set them once and you stop repeating "keep it short, American English, no jargon" at the top of every prompt.

  • Custom instructions live in Settings > Personalization. Free and Go users get up to 1,500 characters and paid plans up to 5,000, per OpenAI. Put your role, your audience and your style rules there.
  • Memory lets ChatGPT use saved details and past chats. You can review or delete what it keeps in Settings > Personalization > Manage memories, or just tell it to forget something (OpenAI).
  • Projects group chats and files with their own instructions, which override your global ones inside that project. A project can use project-only memory so its details stay out of your other chats (OpenAI).

I keep one project per client. The tone notes for a formal client never leak into the casual drafts for another, and the files I uploaded for one job don't color answers for the next.

How to keep work chats private in ChatGPT

On Free, Plus and Pro, ChatGPT may use your conversations to improve OpenAI's models unless you turn that off. Go to Settings > Data controls and switch off Improve the model for everyone; OpenAI says your chats stay in your history but are no longer used for training.

I switched it off the day I first pasted a contract clause into ChatGPT. Two more controls are worth knowing:

  • Temporary chat keeps a conversation out of your history and out of training while it stays temporary (OpenAI). It's the right place for a one-off question about something sensitive.
  • Thumbs up and down still count. OpenAI says that if you give feedback on a reply, it may use the whole conversation to improve its models even after you've opted out (OpenAI).

None of this replaces your employer's rules. If your contract or your company's AI policy says client data stays out of chatbots, those rules win, whatever ChatGPT's settings say.

How to check ChatGPT's answers before you use them

ChatGPT writes wrong answers in the same confident tone as right ones, so check anything you'd put your name to: numbers, dates, names, quotes, prices and legal or medical points. Ask it to search the web and cite links for factual questions, then open the links yourself; a source it names is only useful once you've seen it says what ChatGPT claims.

For writing, treat the reply as a draft. Read it aloud once. If a sentence sounds like nobody you know, rewrite it in your own words before it goes to a client.

Common mistakes when using ChatGPT on a Mac

  • Running an old macOS. The ChatGPT app needs macOS 14 or later; on an older Mac, chatgpt.com in the browser is the answer.
  • Two apps fighting over one shortcut. If Option-Space opens the wrong window, change one app's shortcut rather than living with it.
  • Granting more access than the task needs. Accessibility and folder access are powerful; allow them for the apps and folders you actually use with ChatGPT.
  • One endless chat. A giant thread gets slow and muddled. New task, new chat.
  • Signing in a different way each time. Use the same sign-in method on the website, the app and your iPhone so you land in the same account.

If ChatGPT isn't for you after a week, our ChatGPT alternatives guide and Gemini vs. ChatGPT comparison cover what else costs about the same. And if you relied on the ChatGPT Atlas browser, OpenAI has retired it; our Atlas alternatives page covers where each habit goes.

Option-Space, for the people in your inbox

Merlin, which we make, also opens with Option-Space on top of any app, so give ChatGPT a different shortcut if you run both. Where Merlin differs is its memory for clients and colleagues. Mention in chat that a client prefers calls to email, and Merlin files it on that client's record. It also flags who still needs a reply from you.
