How to Delete a Yahoo Email Account in 2026 (and Why You Might)

Done with Yahoo Mail? Close the account from your Mac, save your email first, clear the 90-day subscription wait and know when deletion becomes final.

To delete a Yahoo email account, save what you want to keep, cancel any paid plan, then sign in to Yahoo's account termination page in Safari or another Mac browser and follow the prompts. In most countries you can change your mind for 30 days by signing back in.

An old Yahoo address tends to stick around out of fear rather than use. I kept one of mine alive for years because I couldn't remember what was tied to it. This guide covers why closing it might make sense, what to get out first using the apps already on your Mac, the exact steps, and the few things that can block you.

Should you delete Yahoo Mail, let it lapse or just remove it from your Mac?

Closing a Yahoo account is only one of four options, and it is the only one that also takes your Yahoo Calendar, Fantasy teams and Finance portfolios with it. If you simply want Yahoo out of Apple Mail, you don't need to delete anything.

Your options for an old Yahoo address

Option

What happens

Choose it when

Close the account

You lose access to Mail, Calendar, Fantasy and Finance data, with a window to reactivate

You've moved everything and want it gone on your terms

Let it lapse

After 12 months without opening Yahoo Mail the mailbox is wiped; after 18 months without a sign-in the account can be deleted

You've saved what matters and don't care about the timing

Remove it from your Mac

The Yahoo account keeps running; it just leaves Apple Mail

You still need the address but not in your daily inbox

Keep it as a spare

Nothing changes, as long as you open Yahoo Mail within each 12 months

You use it for sign-ups and don't want a reply there

Why you might want to delete a Yahoo account

The usual reasons to delete a Yahoo account are security worries, ads and a smaller free inbox than it once had. None of them is urgent on its own, but together they can tip a dormant address into not being worth keeping.

  • The 2013 breach. Yahoo said in October 2017 that all Yahoo user accounts were affected by the August 2013 theft, though not passwords in clear text, payment card data or bank account details. Closing your account now won't undo that, so it's a reason to shrink your footprint, not a fix.
  • Ads. Yahoo's own storage page says the free, 100 GB and 1 TB plans all have ads. Removing them takes Yahoo Mail Plus.
  • Less free storage. Free accounts went from 1 TB to 20 GB in 2025. Yahoo's storage page now lists 20 GB free, with 100 GB at $1.99 a month and 1 TB at $9.99 a month; Yahoo's UK help page lists 15 GB, so the allowance appears to differ by region. When you're full, you can't send, and mail that arrives while you're over the limit isn't stored.
  • One less inbox to watch. A forgotten mailbox is where a password reset or a fake billing notice can sit unseen for months.

The case against is simple: you can't get the address back. Yahoo says a permanently deleted Yahoo ID can't be used again, by you or by anyone else. That protects you from a stranger picking up your old address, but it also means any service still sending password resets there can no longer reach you.

How to delete a Yahoo email account on a Mac

Deleting a Yahoo account on a Mac happens in a web browser, not in Apple Mail, and Yahoo's help page gives three steps. Do the preparation in the next section first, because these steps start the clock.

  1. Open Safari or another browser and go to the Yahoo account termination page.
  2. Sign in with the Yahoo ID you want to close.
  3. Read the information about closing your account, then follow the on-screen instructions.

Removing the account from Apple Mail doesn't close it, and neither does deleting Yahoo's app from your phone. Both only remove your access from that device, so the mailbox keeps collecting mail on Yahoo's side.

What to do before you close your Yahoo account

Before you close a Yahoo account, cancel paid plans, copy your email and contacts somewhere you control, and move your important logins. I'd do them in this order, since the paid plan can add a wait of three months.

Cancel Yahoo Mail Plus and check the 90-day rule

Yahoo only lets you close an account when any balance is paid and at least 90 days have passed since the paid term ended on your last canceled subscription. If your paid month ends on December 15, 2026, the earliest you could close is around March 15, 2027.

  • Bought from Yahoo: sign in to the Yahoo Subscriptions page, select Yahoo Mail Plus, click Manage next to "Subscribed since," choose Cancel, pick a reason and click Cancel subscription, as Yahoo's subscription guide describes.
  • Bought through Apple: open the App Store on your Mac, click your name, then Account Settings, then Manage next to Subscriptions, and cancel it there.

Yahoo takes refund requests within 14 days of a first purchase or annual renewal, once per customer, and only for purchases made at mail.yahoo.com. App Store purchases follow Apple's refund policy.

Save your Yahoo email to your Mac

The most practical way to save Yahoo email on a Mac is to export it from Apple Mail as .mbox files, which you can bring back into Mail whenever you need them. Yahoo's own download works too, but it can arrive slowly and in a less friendly format.

  1. Add the account if it isn't there yet: in Apple Mail, choose **Mail > Add Account** and pick Yahoo.
  2. Give Mail time to finish downloading. A large archive won't appear all at once.
  3. Select the mailboxes you want in the sidebar. Hold Command to select several.
  4. Choose **Mailbox > Export Mailbox**, then pick or create a folder.
  5. Check one of the exports with File > Import Mailboxes. It lands in a new mailbox called Import, which you can delete afterward.

The other route is Yahoo's Get my data page for emails and contacts, or the privacy controls for wider account data. Yahoo warns that a request can take up to 30 days, the file stays available for 30 days, and the data comes as JSON, which isn't pleasant to read. Start it early if you want both copies.

Bring your mail into the new account

If you're moving to Gmail, its one-time import is the simplest way across. On Gmail's website, open the settings gear, click See all settings, then Accounts and import > Import mail and contacts, and follow the prompts. Google's instructions say the old account needs POP access (POP is the older method Gmail uses to copy the messages over), folders don't carry over, and Gmail forwards new mail from the old address for 30 days. Run it well before you close Yahoo, because that forwarding depends on the old account being alive. Moving somewhere else? Look for the import tool in the new provider's settings, and use it before you close Yahoo too.

Ignore older advice about Gmail fetching your Yahoo mail on a schedule: Google is ending that POP fetching for existing users in January 2027, and new users already can't start it. Still choosing where to go? Yahoo Mail vs. Gmail sets the two side by side, and the best Gmail alternatives covers Outlook.com, Proton Mail, Fastmail and others.

Export your contacts and calendar

Yahoo Mail contacts export as a CSV file: open Contacts, click the More options icon and choose Export to CSV file. Yahoo notes that contacts with special characters can make the export fail, so edit those and try again.

Yahoo Calendar is harder, because Yahoo's help doesn't lay out a simple file export. What Yahoo does document is syncing over CalDAV with the server https://caldav.calendar.yahoo.com, your Yahoo ID and an app password, a one-time password you create on Yahoo's Account Security page under **External connections**. CalDAV is the standard way calendar apps sync. In Calendar on your Mac, choose **Calendar > Add Account > Other CalDAV Account**, set Account Type to Manual and enter those details. Then select the calendar and use **File > Export > Export** to get an .ics file. If you have only a few future events, retyping them is faster.

Move every login that uses the address

Moving your logins is the step people regret skipping, because a closed address can't receive a password reset. When I retired an old address, I searched that mailbox for words like "verify," "receipt" and "renewal," and kept a running list in Apple Notes. The one that nearly caught me was the billing login for a small yearly subscription I'd forgotten I paid for.

  • Saved logins. On macOS Sequoia or later, open the Passwords app, select All in the sidebar and look through the usernames. On macOS Sonoma or earlier, the list is under System Settings > Passwords.
  • Your Apple Account. If it uses the Yahoo address, open **Sign-In & Security** under your name in System Settings, click the address and set a new primary. Apple won't let another Apple Account link a removed non-iCloud address for 30 days, and after that someone else might, so tell people who reach you through Messages or FaceTime at that address.
  • Money and health. Banks, cards, insurers, tax accounts, your doctor and anything that bills you. Change these yourself rather than waiting for a reminder to go missing.
  • Recovery details elsewhere. Other email accounts often list your Yahoo address as their backup. Check them too.

For people rather than services, a short note is enough. Send it from the new address so they can save it with one click, and put the change in the subject line, because that's all most people will read.

Hi,

I'm closing my old Yahoo address on [date], so this is the one to save.

I won't see mail sent to the Yahoo address after that.

Thanks,

How long you have to reactivate a closed Yahoo account

A closed Yahoo account can be reactivated by signing in within 30 days in most countries and regions. Yahoo's help page sets longer windows for a few places, based on where the account was registered.

Time to sign back in

Most countries and regions

30 days

Australia, New Zealand

90 days

Brazil, Hong Kong, India, Taiwan

180 days

To reactivate, sign in, verify your recovery information and create a new password, or select Continue if that's what you see. Yahoo's page is silent on mail sent to you during the window, so I'd treat anything sent then as lost and warn people before you close, not after.

Once the account is gone, senders may get a bounce. Yahoo's failed delivery page shows a permanent failure reading "This user doesn't have a yahoo.com account" and suggests the address may have been closed or moved.

How to remove Yahoo from your Mac after closing

Remove a closed Yahoo account from Apple Mail in Mail > Settings > Accounts by selecting it and clicking the Remove button, the minus sign. Apple warns that this also wipes that account's messages off your Mac, so export first or copy anything you want to the On My Mac section of the sidebar.

When another app shares the Yahoo account, Mail sends you to Internet Accounts instead. In System Settings, click Internet Accounts, pick the Yahoo entry and click **Delete Account**, or turn off only Mail. Apple notes this can remove data stored in your apps, so hold off until your exports are finished and checked. For other apps, signing out of email on a Mac has the steps.

Why Yahoo won't let you close your account

When Yahoo blocks a closure, it's usually an unpaid balance, a subscription inside its 90-day wait, or a sign-in problem. Check them in this order:

  1. Check for a balance or a live plan on the Subscriptions page. Don't forget plans bought through Apple, which Yahoo says are billed through the app store rather than your Yahoo account.
  2. Count the days from the end of your last paid term, not the day you clicked Cancel. The 90 days run from when the term ended.
  3. Can't sign in? Yahoo's Sign-in Helper can find your Yahoo ID or reset your password using a recovery phone number or backup email. If those details are out of date, Yahoo warns you may not get back in. At that point, the inactivity rules above are your only route to the account going away.
  4. Address doesn't end in yahoo.com? Yahoo's page doesn't cover partner addresses, so go to the provider. BT addresses, for instance, are deleted in MyBT, and with a single Premium address you also have to contact BT or the billing carries on.

How to stop using Yahoo without deleting it

You can retire a Yahoo address without closing it, but there's a catch if you planned to forward your mail. Automatic forwarding in Yahoo Mail needs Yahoo Mail Plus, and Yahoo discontinued its other subscriptions, including Access + Forwarding, starting December 13, 2025.

That creates a trap worth planning around. Paying for Mail Plus to forward mail during a move restarts the 90-day rule, so a few months of forwarding pushes back your closing date by the length of the plan plus three more months. I wouldn't subscribe just for that. Gmail's 30-day forwarding after an import is free, and after that I'd open the old mailbox once a month for a while and move anything that still turns up.

If the address is staying as a spare, open Yahoo Mail itself at least once within every 12 months. Signing in to your account doesn't count, and Yahoo's reminders at 90, 60 and 30 days go to the mailbox you've stopped reading and to any alternative address, so make sure one is listed. To cut the noise in the meantime, block senders in Yahoo Mail.

Keeping up with replies during the move

Once you've landed on Gmail, Merlin, the Mac assistant from our team, can pick up the replies that slip during a move. It works with Gmail rather than Yahoo and keeps a list of who's still waiting to hear from you. Request a reply in Merlin's chat and you'll see the draft to approve before it's sent.

Frequently asked questions

How long until a Yahoo account is deleted?

Your account closes when you finish the steps, then you have 30 days to reactivate it in most countries, 90 in Australia and New Zealand, and 180 in Brazil, Hong Kong, India and Taiwan. Yahoo's help page doesn't give a separate date for the final deletion.

Can I delete my Yahoo account without logging in?

No. Yahoo's closing steps start by signing in to the termination page. If you're locked out, use Yahoo's Sign-in Helper first.

Can someone else get my old Yahoo email address?

No. Yahoo says it doesn't make deleted Yahoo IDs available to anyone else, and you can't reuse yours either. If you need Yahoo again, you'd create a new account with a different ID.

Does deleting Yahoo Mail delete my Fantasy teams and Finance portfolios?

Yes. A Yahoo account covers all of them, and closing it removes access to Fantasy teams, Calendar events, Finance portfolios and Mail messages and folders.

Will removing Yahoo from Apple Mail delete my account?

No. Removing it only takes the account and its messages off your Mac; Apple says a copy remains on Yahoo's server. To delete the account itself, use Yahoo's termination page.

What happens if I just stop using my Yahoo account?

After 12 months without opening Yahoo Mail, the mailbox stops receiving mail and its contents are permanently deleted. After 18 months without a sign-in, Yahoo may deactivate or delete the account.
