Yahoo Mail vs. Gmail in 2026: Storage, Ads, AI and Which to Use

Yahoo Mail or Gmail? Compare 2026 free storage, ads, paid plans, AI tools and inactivity rules, then see which inbox I'd pick and how to switch.

Gmail is the better choice for most people in 2026: it ties into Google Calendar, Drive and Docs, turns oversized attachments into Drive links, and now includes free AI summaries and writing help in the US. Yahoo Mail gives you more free space for email alone, 20 GB against Gmail's shared 15 GB, and Mail Plus removes its ads for $5 a month.

Old Yahoo addresses have a way of hanging on. When I opened one of mine to clean it up, the storage meter was the first thing I checked, and space is still the first thing people ask about when they weigh Yahoo against Gmail. Below I compare the two on the things that decide it day to day: storage, ads, what you pay to get rid of them, AI, the rules that can wipe a dormant inbox, and how to move if you decide to switch.

Yahoo Mail vs. Gmail at a glance

The short version is that Yahoo wins on raw free email space and Gmail wins on everything around the inbox. Here's how the two compare in October 2026, from Yahoo's storage plans page, Mail Plus page and help center, and Google's storage help page and Gmail help center.

Storage: how much space do you get for free?

Yahoo Mail gives every account 20 GB of free storage for email, and Gmail gives up to 15 GB that also has to hold your Google Drive files and Google Photos backups. So for someone who only cares about email, Yahoo's free plan holds more.

Yahoo Mail storage

Yahoo's storage FAQ lists 20 GB free with every account, a 100 GB plan, a 1 TB plan, and 200 GB inside Yahoo Mail Plus, and Mail Plus combined with a storage plan reaching up to 1.2 TB. The plans page prices them: 100 GB at $1.99 a month and 1 TB at $9.99 a month. It also says plainly that the 20 GB, 100 GB and 1 TB plans all have ads; paying for space doesn't buy you a quieter inbox.

The limit has teeth. Yahoo's FAQ says that once you reach it you can't send or receive email until you free up space, and mail sent to you while the mailbox is full isn't stored and can't be recovered. Yahoo promises email alerts first and a grace period, but doesn't say how long that grace period lasts.

Gmail storage

Google's storage help page says each Google Account gets up to 15 GB, and that Gmail messages and attachments count against it, including Spam and Trash, alongside Drive files and original-quality Photos backups. There's a newer wrinkle: accounts created on or after March 9, 2026 start with 5 GB and can unlock the other 10 GB by verifying a phone number.

When Gmail runs out of room, sending and receiving can be affected. Google adds that if you stay over your limit for two years or more, your Gmail content may be deleted, with at least three months' notice first. Paid space comes through Google One, which starts with a 100 GB Basic plan you can share with up to five other people. Google shows the price for your country on that page.

When I checked my own Google storage, photos from my phone were using far more of it than email. That's the real catch with Gmail's number: 15 GB sounds close to Yahoo's 20 GB, but if your phone backs up to Google Photos, much less of it is left for mail.

Ads: which inbox is cleaner?

Both free inboxes show ads. Yahoo sells a subscription that switches them off for your existing address; on Gmail, the ad-free version comes with a paid Google Workspace plan on your own domain.

Google's Gmail ads page says ads are chosen from your activity while you're signed in to Google, and that Gmail doesn't scan or read your messages to show you ads. Gmail's inbox also sorts mail into tabs: Primary, Social, Promotions, Updates and Forums, which you can turn on or off from Settings → Inbox type → Default → Customize. Keeping Promotions on moves shopping mail and newsletters out of the way of work email.

On Yahoo, the ads help page lets you hide an ad with Dislike this ad or Stop seeing this ad, or swipe it away on mobile, but only for a while; a new one can appear after a refresh. The permanent fix is Mail Plus, and where you buy it matters. Bought on a computer, Plus removes ads for one account on the web and in the app. Bought inside the mobile app, it removes ads for all your accounts in the app but not on the web.

Gmail's ad-free version is a different product. Google's business email page lists ad-free Gmail at a custom company domain as a paid Google Workspace feature, and Business Starter costs $7 per user a month on an annual plan or $8.40 on the Flexible Plan, per Google's billing page. That's more than Yahoo Mail Plus, but it also buys an address on your own domain.

What Yahoo Mail Plus costs and what you get

Yahoo Mail Plus costs $5 a month, with a 14-day free trial for new subscribers, and its headline features are an ad-free inbox and 200 GB of storage. Here's what Yahoo's Plus page and Plus overview list beyond that:

  • Up to 500 temporary email addresses, against 3 on a standard account.
  • Auto-forwarding to another address, set up in the desktop settings.
  • Domain blocking, to filter out all mail from a sender's domain.
  • No account expiration while the subscription is active, which protects a mailbox you rarely open.
  • Outside accounts such as Gmail, Outlook or AOL added to Yahoo Mail.
  • No retailer deal summaries at the top of emails.

Auto-forwarding being a paid feature is the detail I'd flag for anyone thinking of leaving Yahoo. It's the easiest way to keep new mail flowing to another inbox, and on Yahoo it sits behind the subscription. More on that in the switching section below.

Storage plan or Mail Plus?

If you only need space, Yahoo's 100 GB plan at $1.99 a month is cheaper, but it keeps the ads. Mail Plus costs more and gives you less space than the 1 TB plan, yet it's the only Yahoo option that removes ads and stops a quiet mailbox from expiring.

Features for everyday email

Gmail and Yahoo Mail both cover the basics: folders or labels, search, filters, mobile apps and scheduled sending. The differences show up in attachments, undo and where each feature works.

Attachments

Both cap attachments at 25 MB. Yahoo's size limits page says all the files attached to one message can't exceed 25 MB in total, for mail going in and out. Google's attachments page sets the same 25 MB for personal Gmail accounts, but when you go over, Gmail removes the attachment and adds it as a Google Drive link instead.

That difference matters more than it sounds. When I sent a client a slide deck with video in it, Gmail swapped the file for a Drive link and the email went out without me doing anything. On Yahoo I'd have had to upload the deck somewhere myself and paste a link.

Undo and schedule send

Gmail lets you choose how long you have to take an email back. Google's Undo Send page says you can set a cancellation period of 5, 10, 20 or 30 seconds under Settings → See all settings, then click Undo in the notice after sending. Our guide to unsending an email covers what to do when that window has passed.

Both services schedule email. Gmail's schedule send page covers the web, Android and iPhone, and allows up to 100 scheduled emails at once. Yahoo's scheduling page describes Schedule Send in the Yahoo Mail app: tap the More menu, then Schedule for later, pick a time and tap Schedule message. It works with any account you've added to the app, and scheduled mail waits in a Scheduled folder.

Calendar, files and the rest of your day

This is where Gmail pulls ahead for work. A Google Account comes with Calendar, Drive, Docs and Meet under one sign-in, so a meeting invite, a shared file and a video link all live in the same account as your email. Yahoo Mail is an inbox first. If your clients and colleagues already send Google Docs and Calendar invites, Gmail saves you a steady trickle of friction every week.

AI in Yahoo Mail and Gmail

Gmail has the more developed free AI features in 2026. In a January 8, 2026 post, Google said AI Overview summaries of email conversations, Help Me Write and Suggested Replies were rolling out to everyone at no cost, starting in the US and in English. Two extras need a Google AI Pro or Ultra subscription: asking your inbox questions with AI Overviews, and the Proofread tool.

Yahoo has AI summaries in Yahoo Mail too. Its January 27, 2026 announcement of Yahoo Scout, its new AI answer engine, names AI summaries in Yahoo Mail among the features it powers, but gives no detail on what they cover or who gets them.

I use thread summaries mostly to catch up on long reply-all chains I was copied on, and I still open the last message before I answer. A summary tells me what a thread is about; it doesn't always tell me what someone is waiting for me to do.

Security and account rules

Both services support passkeys, which let you sign in with your face, fingerprint or screen lock instead of a password. You create one on Yahoo from the Account Security page with Create passkey, and on Google from the passkeys page with Create a passkey. Turn it on for whichever inbox you keep, since your email is where every other password reset lands.

Yahoo's history weighs on some people's choice. On October 3, 2017, Yahoo said its 2013 data breach had affected all 3 billion of its accounts, AP reported. The stolen information may have included names, email addresses, phone numbers, birthdates and security questions and answers. If you still have an old Yahoo account, it's worth replacing those old security questions with a passkey and a current recovery phone.

What happens to an inbox you stop using

Yahoo's inactivity rule is much stricter than Google's, and it catches people out. Yahoo's inactive mailbox page says that if you don't open your Yahoo Mail mailbox for 12 months, it becomes inactive and all your emails, folders, contacts and settings are permanently deleted. Signing in to your Yahoo account on its own doesn't count. An active Mail Plus subscription keeps the mailbox from being deleted, though Yahoo says that isn't offered everywhere.

I used to sign in to Yahoo for other things and assumed that kept the old mailbox alive. It doesn't: you have to open Yahoo Mail itself. Now I put a reminder in my calendar to open any backup inbox a couple of times a year.

Google's inactive account policy gives you two years, and almost anything counts as activity: reading or sending email, using Drive, watching YouTube, searching while signed in, or signing in to another app with Google. Google emails the account and its recovery address before deleting anything.

Which should you use?

Choose Gmail if you're starting fresh or your work runs on Google tools, and keep Yahoo if your address is woven into years of accounts and you're happy with how it works. Here's how I'd decide:

Which inbox fits you

Your situation

My pick

Why

Setting up a new personal address

Gmail

Calendar, Drive and free AI tools under one account

Your work uses Google Docs and Calendar

Gmail

Invites, files and email in one place

You want an address on your own domain

Gmail through Google Workspace

Ad-free Gmail on your domain, from $7 per user a month

A big email archive and no photos to store

Yahoo Mail

20 GB of free space just for mail

You hate ads but want to keep your Yahoo address

Yahoo Mail Plus

$5 a month for no ads and 200 GB

A backup inbox you rarely open

Gmail

Two years before inactivity deletion, not 12 months

For my own setup, Gmail is the inbox I work from, and the old Yahoo address is a forwarding stop I check now and then. If you're weighing a new address for a job search or a business, our guide to creating a professional email address goes into names and domains.

How to switch from Yahoo Mail to Gmail

Moving from Yahoo Mail to Gmail takes two parts: bring the old mail across once, then make sure new mail still reaches you. One change makes the second part harder than it used to be. Google's Gmailify and POP page says Gmail no longer supports checking third-party accounts through POP for new users after the first quarter of 2026, and existing users can keep it only until January 2027.

What still works, per Google, is a one-time import of mail and contacts on the web, reading the other account over IMAP in Gmail's phone and tablet apps for Android, iPhone and iPad, and automatic forwarding set up at your old provider. On Yahoo, auto-forwarding is a Mail Plus feature.

Import your Yahoo mail into Gmail

Google's import steps on a computer:

  1. In Gmail, click Settings, then See all settings.
  2. Open the Accounts and import tab.
  3. Click Import mail and contacts.
  4. Follow the on-screen steps to connect your Yahoo account.
  5. Click Start import.

Google notes that folders and labels aren't imported, so sort out anything you need to keep organized before you start. The import is a copy: new mail sent to your Yahoo address won't follow unless you forward it or check it in the Gmail app.

Keep new Yahoo mail coming to you

  • Add Yahoo to the Gmail app on your phone, which uses IMAP, so you can read and reply from both addresses in one place.
  • Turn on forwarding in Yahoo if you pay for Mail Plus, so new mail lands in your Gmail inbox.
  • Tell the people and accounts that matter: your bank, your doctor, your clients, and the logins you'd hate to lose.
  • Keep opening Yahoo Mail at least once every 12 months, so the mailbox isn't emptied while stragglers are still writing to it.

When I moved an old Yahoo inbox over, I ran the import, then added Yahoo to the Gmail app on my phone for anything that still arrived at the old address. Each time something came in, I updated that account to the Gmail address. After a few months, the trickle stopped on its own.

If the goal is fewer sign-up emails in your new inbox rather than a full move, our guide to throwaway email addresses shows how to keep shops and newsletters on a separate address.

Frequently asked questions

Is Yahoo Mail still free in 2026?

Yes. Yahoo Mail's standard plan is free with 20 GB of storage and ads. Yahoo Mail Plus costs $5 a month for an ad-free inbox and 200 GB.

Does Yahoo Mail have more storage than Gmail?

For email alone, yes. Yahoo gives 20 GB for mail, while Gmail's up to 15 GB is shared with Google Drive and Google Photos, and some new Google accounts start with 5 GB until a phone number is verified.

Is Gmail safer than Yahoo Mail?

Both support passkeys, so how you secure your own account matters most. Yahoo's 2013 breach, which it said in 2017 affected all 3 billion accounts, is the main reason some people trust it less.

Will Yahoo delete my email account if I don't use it?

Yahoo deletes the contents of a mailbox you haven't opened for 12 months, and signing in to other Yahoo services doesn't count. An active Yahoo Mail Plus subscription prevents it where Plus is offered.

Can I move my Yahoo emails to Gmail?

Yes. In Gmail on a computer, go to Settings, See all settings, Accounts and import, then Import mail and contacts. It's a one-time copy, and folders and labels don't come across.

How do I get rid of ads in Yahoo Mail?

You can hide individual ads for a while, but only Yahoo Mail Plus removes them. Bought on a computer it covers one account on the web and in the app; bought in the app it covers the app only.
