How to Block an Email in Yahoo Mail and Stop Spam in 2026
Spam filling your Yahoo inbox? Block a sender on your Mac, stop a whole domain, report spam, unsubscribe, and make Apple Mail and Yahoo work together.
To block an email in Yahoo Mail from your Mac, go to mail.yahoo.com in a browser, click More, choose Settings, then Security and Privacy. Under Blocked addresses, click Add, enter the address and click Save. Yahoo allows up to 1,000 blocked addresses. For bulk spam from changing addresses, Mark as spam works better.
An old Yahoo address tends to collect years of sign-ups, and by now the unwanted mail is probably a mix of one person who won't stop writing, shops you bought from once, and outright scams. Those are three different problems with three different fixes. This guide covers each one on a Mac, including what changes if you read Yahoo Mail through Apple's Mail app.
Block, spam, filter or unsubscribe: which one to use
Yahoo Mail has four tools for unwanted email, and each suits a different sender. Blocking stops one known address, spam reports deal with junk you never asked for, filters sort mail by rules you set, and unsubscribing ends a mailing list at the source.
The email you're getting | Best tool | Where to do it | Limit |
|---|---|---|---|
One person or address that won't stop | Blocked addresses | Yahoo Mail in a Mac browser | 1,000 addresses |
Junk from addresses that keep changing | Mark as spam | Yahoo's website or the Yahoo app | None stated |
A newsletter or store list you once joined | Unsubscribe | Yahoo's website or the Yahoo app | Only where Yahoo offers it |
Everything from one company's domain | Domain block, or a free filter | Yahoo Mail in a browser; domain blocks also work in the app | 500 domains with Yahoo Mail Plus; 500 filters |
Mail you want kept, just out of the Inbox | Filter to a folder | Yahoo Mail in a Mac browser | 500 filters |
Blocking gets overused. It feels decisive, but a spammer who rotates addresses may never send from the blocked one again, and each block uses up a slot on your list. I save it for a real, stable address, like the recruiter who kept writing to me after I'd said no twice.
How to block an email address in Yahoo Mail on a Mac
Blocking an address in Yahoo Mail happens in Security and Privacy settings, and Yahoo's own instructions are written for a desktop browser, which makes a Mac the natural place to do it. These steps follow Yahoo's blocking guide:
- Open mail.yahoo.com in Safari or any other browser and sign in.
- Click the More icon on the left, below your mail folders, then choose Settings.
- Click Security and Privacy.
- Under Blocked addresses, click Add.
- Type the full email address and click Save.
Yahoo describes blocking as anonymous, so the sender isn't told. Copy the address from the message rather than the display name: the name in bold can say anything, and the address is what Yahoo matches. Yahoo's guide doesn't say where blocked mail ends up, or whether it touches messages you already have, so clean up old ones yourself. Search for the sender, select the results and delete them. Yahoo empties Trash after 7 days.
Give Yahoo Mail a place in your Dock
On macOS Sonoma 14 or later, open mail.yahoo.com in Safari and choose File > Add to Dock. Apple's web apps guide says this saves the site as its own app, which you can open from the Dock or Spotlight. Mine sits next to Calendar, so reaching Yahoo's settings takes one click.
How to unblock an address in Yahoo Mail
To unblock a sender, go back to More > Settings > Security and Privacy, hover over the address and click its Delete icon. Yahoo's guide lists no other steps, and mail from that address can reach you again from then on. Check here first if someone says their emails to you keep vanishing.
Can you block someone in the Yahoo Mail app?
Yahoo documents blocking individual addresses only for a desktop browser. Its guide to spoof and spam alerts says you can block a user when the mobile app flags an email, without giving steps, and guides on other sites disagree about what the iPhone app offers. The Mac route is the one Yahoo spells out, so use it for anyone you want gone for good.
How to block a whole domain in Yahoo Mail
Blocking a domain in Yahoo Mail stops everything sent from one company's addresses, such as anything ending in @example.com, and it's a Yahoo Mail Plus feature. Yahoo says the option may not be available on your account, and allows up to 500 domains while your subscription is active. It also says blocking a domain unsubscribes you from that brand.
- In Yahoo Mail in your browser, click More, then Settings.
- Click Security and Privacy.
- Under Block unwanted sender domains, click Add.
- Enter the domain and click Save.
To undo it, click the Delete icon next to the domain. In the Yahoo Mail app, the same setting is under the Profile icon, then the Settings icon, then + Add a domain.
On a free account, a filter gets you most of the way there. When a shopping site started mailing my Yahoo address from a run of different addresses, I made one filter on the part after the @ and sent it all to Trash. The next section has the steps.
How to create a filter in Yahoo Mail
A Yahoo Mail filter sorts new messages into a folder or into Trash based on rules you set, and the limit is 500 filters. Filters are also the free answer for domains, and the better choice for mail you want to keep but not see in your Inbox, like receipts.
- In Yahoo Mail in your browser, click the More icon, then Settings.
- Click Filters, then Add new filters.
- Enter a name you'll recognize later, such as "Shop mail to Trash."
- Set the rule on the sender. To catch a whole domain, match on the domain itself, such as @example.com, with a condition that looks anywhere in the address rather than at its start.
- Choose a folder, create one, or choose Trash.
- Click Save at the bottom.
Four details from Yahoo's filter troubleshooting page explain most filters that seem broken:
- Old mail stays put. New filters don't apply to messages already in your mailbox.
- Every rule in a filter must match. To catch two domains, make two filters rather than one filter with two rules.
- Order matters. Filters run from the top of the list down, so one higher up can get there first. Select a filter and use the arrows to move it.
- Positive rules are more reliable. Yahoo suggests criteria such as "begins with" over negative ones such as "does not contain."
Filing to a folder also has a side effect on POP setups: a mail app using POP downloads only the Inbox, so filtered mail won't reach it. If your Mac's Mail app seems to be missing messages, check which kind of account you set up under Mail > Settings > Accounts.
How to mark an email as spam in Yahoo Mail
Marking an email as spam in Yahoo Mail moves it to the Spam folder and sends future mail from that sender there too. On the web, select the message and click the Mark as spam icon. In the app, open the email, tap the **More** icon, then tap **Mark as spam**. Yahoo says flagging spam helps train its filter, so it's worth the second it takes even when the sender will change tomorrow.
To rescue a message, click More then Spam, select the email and click Not spam. It moves to your Inbox, and later mail from that sender goes there too. Yahoo deletes spam after 30 days, and you can't change that timer, so check the folder before a month passes if you're waiting on something. Spam doesn't count toward your storage, and Yahoo says it needs no other action from you.
How to unsubscribe from emails in Yahoo Mail
Unsubscribing in Yahoo Mail on the web is tied to the spam button: when you mark a mailing list message as spam and Yahoo trusts the sender, it offers **Unsubscribe** instead. Pick that for a list you actually joined. Pick Report as spam if you never signed up.
In the app, open the email and tap **More**, then **Unsubscribe**. If it's missing, the Unsubscribe view tab lists mailing lists you can leave, though Yahoo notes that not every email has the option. When neither appears, look for the link at the bottom of an email from a sender you recognize, and leave it alone in anything that looks off.
Give it a little time. US law gives companies 10 business days to honor an opt-out, so a few more messages in the first week don't mean it failed. Order and shipping updates are mostly exempt from those rules, which is why they can keep coming. If a list is still mailing you after two weeks, mark it as spam and move on. Don't reply asking to be removed, or pay a service that promises to take you off spam lists: Yahoo advises against both.
Yahoo Mail inside Apple's Mail app: how blocking works
Apple's Mail app has its own block list and spam filter, separate from the settings in your Yahoo account. Apple's and Yahoo's guides don't say the two share anything, so treat a block in Mail as applying to Mail only. If you read Yahoo on a Mac, an iPhone and the web, use Yahoo's settings for anything that should hold everywhere.
Yahoo also recommends turning off spam filters in third-party apps and not managing spam there. I took that advice after clicking the Spam button in Mail for too long and wondering if Yahoo ever heard about it. Now I report at mail.yahoo.com and let Mail simply show the result.
To follow it, choose Mail > Settings, click Junk Mail, and clear Enable junk mail filtering. Apple notes that when a provider filters on its server, messages can still land in the Junk mailbox with that box cleared, so seeing Yahoo's spam there is normal. Apple's newest guide calls some of these controls Spam instead of Junk, so go by what your Mac shows.
Mail's own tools, if you still want them
Mail's tools are useful for a sender you only see on this Mac, or for sorting that Yahoo's filters can't do.
- Block a sender. Select a message, click the arrow beside the sender's name in the header, and choose Block Sender. Apple allows up to 3,000. In Mail > Settings > Junk Mail > Blocked, choose whether blocked mail stays in your Inbox with a banner or moves to Trash.
- Mark as junk from the keyboard. Shift-Command-J moves selected messages to the Junk mailbox, and Option-Command-J erases junk mail.
- Make a rule. Choose **Mail > Settings**, click **Rules**, then **Add Rule**. Choose From and Contains, type the domain, then choose Move Message and a mailbox. Rules run in list order, and Control-Command-L applies active rules to the messages you've selected.
- Keep one Junk mailbox. For an IMAP account, Mailbox Behaviors under Mail > Settings > Accounts sets which mailbox stores junk. Apple suggests setting it on each Mac you use so you don't end up with two in the sidebar.
More on tuning that filter is in our guide to Apple Mail's junk settings.
Why you're still getting spam after blocking in Yahoo Mail
Spam keeps coming after a block because a block matches one exact address, and bulk senders often change theirs. Work down this list in order:
- The address changed. Compare the new message's address with your blocked list. If it's different each time, stop blocking and mark as spam, or filter the domain.
- You blocked in the wrong place. A block in Apple Mail lives in Mail. Add the address in Yahoo's Blocked addresses too.
- The message predates the block. Nothing Yahoo documents says old mail gets removed, and filters skip it too. Delete it by hand.
- A filter is out of order. Another filter higher in the list may be catching the message first. Check the order under Settings > Filters.
- The sender is using your own address. Faked senders can make spam look like it came from you. Mark it as spam and don't block yourself.
- The list is full. At 1,000 addresses, remove old entries, since one domain filter can often replace several of them.
Missing mail is the opposite problem with a similar cause. Mail goes through Yahoo's spam filter before your own filters, so check Spam first, then Trash, then your filter list. I keep a filter's name specific for this reason: "Shop mail to Trash" is easy to spot and fix when a real order confirmation goes missing.
Scam emails need more than a block
Yahoo may show an alert above your messages or a red exclamation mark beside the sender when it suspects phishing, and it warns that some phishing arrives with no alert. Click Report or Remove sender on the alert, or select the email and click Spam if there's none. When a fake delivery notice reached my Yahoo inbox, I reported it without clicking anything. To see who really sent one on your Mac, show the full headers in Apple Mail. The FTC also suggests reporting spam at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.
How to get less spam in your Yahoo inbox
Less spam starts with fewer places holding your real address, since the FTC points out that companies may share or sell the email you give them. Filters and blocks only handle what has already arrived, so a few habits do more over time:
- Use a separate address for sign-ups. Yahoo's disposable addresses deliver to your main Inbox and can be deleted later. They come with Yahoo Mail Plus (up to 500, or up to 3 to try for free where Plus is sold), so check Settings > Mailboxes to see if you have them. Other options are covered in throwaway email addresses.
- Check privacy policies when it matters. Before giving your address to a site you'll use once, see whether it shares contact details with third parties.
- Report instead of deleting. Deleting clears one message, while a spam report also helps train Yahoo's filter.
- Don't reply to spam. Yahoo advises against replying to senders you don't know.
- Do a clear-out once in a while. Twice a year I go through the Spam folder and my filter list together, and remove any filter for a company I've stopped hearing from. That frees up room for ones I still need.

Frequently asked questions
How do I permanently block an email address on Yahoo?
In a desktop browser, open More > Settings > Security and Privacy, click Add under Blocked addresses, enter the address and click Save. The block stays until you remove it, and Yahoo allows up to 1,000 addresses.
Can I block an entire domain on Yahoo Mail for free?
Yahoo's domain block is a Yahoo Mail Plus feature. On a free account, create a filter that matches the domain and sends the mail to Trash, under Settings > Filters.
Does the sender know when I block them on Yahoo?
Yahoo describes blocking as anonymous, so the sender isn't told. Yahoo's guide doesn't say what the sender sees if they email you after that.
Why do blocked emails still show up in Yahoo Mail?
The sender is usually using a new address, or the block was made in another app such as Apple Mail rather than in Yahoo's settings. Check the exact address against your Blocked addresses list, then mark new variants as spam.
How long does Yahoo Mail keep spam?
Yahoo deletes messages in the Spam folder after 30 days and messages in Trash after 7 days. You can't change either timer, so rescue anything you need before then.
Should I click unsubscribe in a spam email?
Use unsubscribe for lists you joined from senders you recognize, ideally through Yahoo's own Unsubscribe option. If you never signed up or the email looks suspicious, mark it as spam and leave the links alone.
