What GrubMarket does
GrubMarket sells food to businesses and consumers and sells software to food companies. Its website lists three groups of customers:
- Business buyers. Grocers, foodservice companies, schools, government buyers, local markets and restaurants, supplied through GrubMarket's network of wholesalers and distributors.
- Food businesses that use its software. Wholesalers, distributors and brokers, plus farmers using its tools for community-supported agriculture.
- Consumers. Home and office delivery of farm-fresh food, now including SPUD in western Canada.
The software side is a suite the company names in its July 2026 announcement: WholesaleWare, an ERP platform for inventory, warehouses, accounting and ordering; GrubAssist AI, a set of AI analysts and workflow agents; Orders IO for custom-branded ordering; and GrubPay for payments. In November 2025 GrubMarket bought Procurant, a produce e-commerce and trading platform that the company says handles $5.5 billion a year in gross merchandise volume for over 850 customers in 14 countries (GrubMarket, TIME100 post).
Much of GrubMarket's growth has come from buying traditional distributors. Distribution Strategy Group reported in July 2026 that it has acquired more than 100 produce wholesalers, food distributors and specialty food suppliers in the U.S. and Canada since its founding.

Mike Xu founded GrubMarket and is its CEO; YC lists him as Founder, CEO and President. On YC's page he says he started the company self-funded in his garage, working on it in his spare time alongside a full-time job for about 10 months. Other executives named in the company's recent announcements:

Earlier, the SEC says GrubMarket raised about $80 million in a private Series D between November 2019 and February 2021, and TechCrunch reported a $60 million raise in October 2020 at a $500 million post-money valuation; the sources don't say whether that raise was part of the Series D. TechCrunch, citing PitchBook, lists Battery Ventures, Tiger Global and Y Combinator among earlier backers. With the Series H, CEO Mike Xu said the company did not need the money because its business is self-sustaining.
SEC settlement, January 2025
On January 17, 2025, the SEC announced settled charges that GrubMarket gave Series D investors financial information it should have known was unreliable, overstating its historical revenues by about $550 million over five years, while using lower figures elsewhere, including in tax filings. Without admitting or denying the findings, GrubMarket agreed to a cease-and-desist order and an $8 million civil penalty.
