How to Get Rid of Meta AI on Facebook in 2026: Mac and iPhone

Facebook has no switch to turn Meta AI off. What works on your Mac and iPhone: mute the chat, delete AI chats, hide it in Safari and limit ad use.

You can't fully get rid of Meta AI on Facebook in 2026. Meta offers no setting that turns it off, and its help center describes no way to remove it. What you can do: use facebook.com on your Mac, where fewer Meta AI features exist, hide what's left with Safari, mute and delete the Meta AI chat, and limit how your AI chats shape your ads.

If you came here hoping for a single toggle, I understand the frustration. Meta AI now sits in Facebook search, in Messenger, under posts and in the post composer, and none of it asked first. This guide covers where Meta AI shows up on a Mac and on an iPhone, each control that actually works today, and the popular tricks that don't.

Can you turn off Meta AI on Facebook?

No. Facebook has no setting that disables Meta AI, on the website or in the iPhone app. Meta's help pages explain how to ask Meta AI questions in Facebook search and chat with Meta AI in Messenger, but none of them describe a way to switch the assistant off. Since May 2026, Meta has been bringing its newer Muse Spark model to Meta AI across Facebook and Messenger, including search bars, group chats and posts, so the assistant is spreading, not shrinking.

That's the honest starting point. Still, the handful of controls Meta does give you, plus one Safari feature, take care of most of what makes Meta AI annoying day to day.

Where Meta AI shows up on Facebook in 2026

Meta AI appears in more places on the Facebook iPhone app than on Facebook in a Mac browser. The difference matters, because the simplest way to see less of Meta AI is to do more of your Facebook on the Mac.

  • Facebook search. In the iPhone app, the search screen has an Ask Meta AI option, and some posts in your feed show an Ask Meta AI prompt below them. Meta's help page says this feature isn't available on computers.
  • AI Mode. In June 2026 Meta added AI Mode, a search tab that answers questions using public posts from Groups and Reels. Meta's announcement doesn't say which devices get it or whether it can be switched off.
  • Messenger. Meta's help page tells you to open Messenger and tap Meta AI in the top right to start a chat, and existing Meta AI chats then sit in your Chats list like any other conversation.
  • The post composer. Write with AI helps draft posts, comments and stories in the app. Meta's help page says it isn't available on computers either.
  • Your feed. Since October 2026, the three-dot menu on a post includes Your algorithm, an AI-powered space for telling Facebook which topics you want more of. It's optional, but it's another AI touchpoint.

When I moved my Facebook reading from the iPhone app to Safari on my Mac, the thing I noticed first was how much quieter search felt without the Ask Meta AI prompt sitting on top of it.

Use Facebook in Safari or Chrome on your Mac

Using facebook.com in Safari, Chrome or Firefox on your Mac removes two Meta AI features outright, because Meta's own help pages say Ask Meta AI and Write with AI aren't offered on computers. There's nothing to install and nothing to configure.

Mac users also lost the Messenger app. Meta discontinued the Messenger desktop app for Mac on December 15, 2025, and existing users were sent to the Facebook website to keep chatting. So on a Mac, the browser is the only way in, which happens to be the version with the fewest AI entry points.

To make the browser feel like an app, add facebook.com to your Dock as a web app: in Safari, open Facebook, click the Share button in the toolbar, choose Add to Dock, then click Add. If you were signed in to Facebook in Safari, you're usually signed in to the web app too.

Keep the iPhone app for what only it does

If you need the iPhone app for posting photos or Stories, use it for that and nothing else. Reading, searching and messaging on the Mac keeps you clear of the Meta AI features Meta only offers in its apps.

How to hide Meta AI on Facebook in Safari on Mac

Safari on macOS 15 or later can hide any page element you click with a feature Apple calls Hide Distracting Items. You can point it at a Meta AI prompt, the AI Mode tab or any other panel on Facebook you'd rather not see.

  1. Open facebook.com in Safari and go to the page where the Meta AI element appears.
  2. Click the Page Menu button in the Smart Search field.
  3. Choose Hide Distracting Items.
  4. Move the pointer over the page. Safari draws a border around each item it can hide.
  5. Click the Meta AI element to hide it. Repeat for any others.
  6. Click Done in the Smart Search field.

Apple is clear about the limits: the feature works best on items that don't change often, and it won't permanently hide content that updates frequently. Facebook's pages change regularly, so expect a hidden element to come back now and then. When a page has hidden items, an eye icon with a slash appears next to the Page Menu button; choose Show Hidden Items from the Page Menu to bring them back. Clearing your Safari history also clears what you've hidden.

I treat this as maintenance, not a fix. Whenever Facebook changes its layout and a prompt reappears, I open the Page Menu and hide it again.

How to mute the Meta AI chat in Messenger

Muting stops notifications from the Meta AI chat without deleting it. Meta's help page for turning Messenger notifications on or off gives these steps for Messenger on the web, which is how you'll use it on a Mac:

  1. In your chat list, hover over the Meta AI conversation.
  2. Click the Options icon (three dots).
  3. Click Mute notifications.
  4. Under Mute conversation, choose what to mute, then click Next.
  5. Choose how long to mute it, then click Mute.

Mute Meta AI on iPhone

Meta's help page doesn't list iPhone steps for muting a chat. In the Messenger iPhone app, a guide from the tech site Built In describes opening the Meta AI chat, tapping the info icon (top right), tapping the bell icon and choosing Until I change it. The wording in the app can differ by version, so look for the bell or Mute option in that chat's details.

Muting only silences alerts. The chat stays in your list, and Meta AI remains available everywhere else on Facebook and Messenger.

How to delete your Meta AI chats

You can delete the Meta AI conversation in Messenger the same way you delete any chat, and Meta says deleting permanently removes it from your view. If you only want it out of sight, archiving the chat hides it without deleting it.

Meta AI chats also support a few typed commands. Meta's help page on Messenger commands says you can ask an AI to delete information about you from previous conversations, and that sending /ai-options in a chat with an AI lists the commands available to you. Meta adds that commands aren't available on every platform or for everyone, so check the list in your own chat.

If you also used meta.ai or the Meta AI app

Chats you had on the meta.ai website or in the Meta AI app are stored separately. Meta's help page on removing chats from Meta AI lists this path for the website, which is what you'd use on a Mac:

  1. Go to meta.ai and click your profile picture in the bottom left.
  2. Click Settings, then Data & privacy.
  3. Click Manage your information.
  4. Click Delete all chats and media, then Delete all.

Deleting chats removes them from your history. It doesn't undo what Meta has already used them for, which is the next section.

How to turn off AI comment summaries on your posts

Facebook can show an AI-written summary of the comments under a post. Several guides, including Built In's, describe a switch for your own posts, and it's one of the few Meta AI features you can actually turn off. On a Mac:

  1. Click your profile picture in the top right of Facebook.
  2. Choose Settings & privacy, then Settings.
  3. In the left sidebar, under Audience and visibility, click Posts.
  4. Turn off Allow comment summaries on your posts.

Meta's own help center doesn't document this setting, so a missing toggle may mean it hasn't reached your account yet, or that Meta moved it. It only affects your posts; summaries can still appear under other people's.

How to limit what Meta does with your AI chats

Since December 16, 2025, Meta uses your conversations with Meta AI, by text or voice, to personalize the posts, Reels and ads you see. The Register reported that there's no opt-out, and that users in the EU, the UK and South Korea were excluded at launch. Meta says it won't use conversations about religion, sexual orientation, politics, health, racial or ethnic origin, philosophical beliefs or trade union membership to show you ads.

You can't stop the data use, but you can shape the result. Meta's help page on ad preferences gives this path on a computer:

  1. Click your profile picture in the top right of Facebook.
  2. Choose Settings & privacy, then Settings.
  3. Click Meta Account, then Ad preferences.

From there you can manage ad topics to see less of certain subjects, hide advertisers, and control whether ads use activity from other businesses. Meta notes that these preferences change which ads you see, not how many.

One more lever is Accounts Center. Meta says your Meta AI chats only personalize the accounts you've linked there, so if your WhatsApp or Instagram account isn't added to the same Accounts Center as Facebook, Meta AI chats on those apps won't shape your Facebook feed.

The control I lean on most is simpler: before I type anything into a Meta AI chat, I ask whether I'd be fine seeing ads about it next week. If not, it goes somewhere else.

What doesn't get rid of Meta AI

A few popular fixes don't work, and it saves time to know which before trying them.

  • Deleting the Facebook app on your iPhone. That removes the app's entry points on your phone, but Meta AI comes with Facebook itself, so it's still there on any device where you sign in.
  • Hunting for a toggle in Settings. There isn't one for Meta AI itself. The only switch that's widely reported is the comment summaries setting above.
  • Looking for a block option. Meta's help pages document muting and deleting the Meta AI chat, not blocking it.
  • Ignoring it and hoping it fades. Meta is adding features, not removing them. AI Mode arrived in June 2026 and Your algorithm in October 2026.

If what bothers you most is Meta AI's reach into your data rather than its buttons, our look at Meta's Muse agent and its alternatives covers who holds what when you hand an AI real tasks. And if you're cleaning up settings across your accounts, the same approach works for Google and Gmail privacy settings on a Mac.

A quick Meta AI cleanup, in order

Start with the change that removes the most Meta AI and work down:

  1. Do your everyday Facebook reading and messaging in Safari on your Mac, with facebook.com added to the Dock.
  2. Hide the Meta AI prompts and the AI Mode tab with Hide Distracting Items.
  3. Mute the Meta AI chat in Messenger, on the Mac and on your iPhone.
  4. Delete the Meta AI chat, and your meta.ai history if you used it.
  5. Turn off Allow comment summaries on your posts if you see the setting.
  6. Review Ad preferences and check which accounts are linked in Accounts Center.

None of this removes Meta AI. Together, though, it turns the assistant from something that interrupts you into something you have to go looking for, which is about as close to "off" as Facebook allows in 2026.

Frequently asked questions

Can I permanently turn off Meta AI on Facebook?

No. Facebook has no setting that disables Meta AI, and Meta's help center describes no way to remove it. You can mute and delete the Meta AI chat, hide its prompts in Safari on a Mac, and limit how your AI chats affect ads.

Is Meta AI on Facebook on a computer?

Less of it. Meta's help pages say Ask Meta AI in search and Write with AI in the composer aren't available on computers, so Facebook in a Mac browser shows fewer Meta AI features than the iPhone app.

Does muting Meta AI stop it completely?

No. Muting only stops notifications from the Meta AI chat in Messenger. The chat stays in your list until you delete it, and Meta AI still appears in other places on Facebook.

Does Meta use my Meta AI chats for ads?

Yes. Since December 16, 2025, Meta uses your Meta AI conversations to personalize content and ads in most regions, with no opt-out, though it says it won't use sensitive topics like health or politics for ads.

Will deleting my Meta AI chats remove my data?

Deleting removes the chats from your view and history. It doesn't reverse any personalization Meta has already based on them.

Can I hide the Meta AI button on Facebook on my Mac?

Yes, in Safari on macOS 15 or later. Choose Hide Distracting Items from the Page Menu and click the Meta AI element; it may reappear when Facebook changes its layout.
