Twitch: What It Does, Who Runs It, Funding and News
Twitch is a live streaming service, best known for video game streams, where creators broadcast and viewers chat in real time. It grew out of Justin.tv, a Y Combinator Winter 2007 company, launched in June 2011 and is based in San Francisco. Amazon bought it for about $970 million in 2014. Dan Clancy has been CEO since March 2023.
Twitch is a live video service owned by Amazon. Creators stream games, music and other live shows, and viewers watch, chat and pay creators through subscriptions and Bits. Amazon agreed to buy Twitch Interactive for about $970 million in cash on August 25, 2014, and Dan Clancy has run the company as CEO since March 16, 2023.
Y Combinator (YC) lists Twitch as "Acquired" and describes it with the line "A global community creating the future of live entertainment" (YC company page). This page sets out Twitch's basics, its Justin.tv origins, its leadership since 2023, its venture money before the Amazon sale, and its 2026 product launches.

What Twitch does
Twitch is a platform for live streams with a chat beside each one. YC's page calls it "the world's leading video platform and community for gamers" (YC company page), and gaming is still the largest category: Twitch's own State of Gaming 2026 report counts 8.6 billion hours of gaming content watched between January 1 and September 1, 2026. Twitch also runs a DJ Program for music streams and TwitchCon, an in-person event it has held for ten years (Twitch blog).
Twitch lists Bits, Subs, Turbo and Prime as its products (Twitch blog), and brands pay creators through sponsorships (Twitch blog). Since May 2026 every streamer can switch on subs, Bits, emotes and Channel Points, but a payout still requires Affiliate or Partner status, according to Twitch's "Monetization for All" post.
Fortune put Twitch at an estimated 35 million daily active users in June 2026, and wrote that Twitch had not turned its hours of broadcasts into a profitable business (Fortune). Twitch does not publish its revenue.
From Justin.tv to Twitch
Twitch began as Justin.tv, a live video site that went through YC's Winter 2007 batch. In June 2011 the team narrowed in on live gaming streams, which became Twitch (TheDomains, Engadget). The parent company was renamed Twitch Interactive in February 2014, and in August 2014 Justin.tv shut down its website, mobile apps and API so the company could focus on Twitch (TheDomains).
Sources differ on who counts as a founder. YC's company page lists Emmett Shear, Justin Kan and Kyle Vogt. YC's own bio of Michael Seibel, now a YC General Partner, names him as a cofounder and the CEO of Justin.tv, and says Justin.tv became Twitch "under the leadership of Emmett Shear" (YC). Kyle Vogt went on to start Cruise in 2013 (YC company page).
Who runs Twitch
Dan Clancy is Twitch's CEO. He was Twitch's president when Emmett Shear resigned as CEO on March 16, 2023, and Shear wrote that Clancy would "step fully into the role of CEO, effective immediately" (Twitch blog). Shear had been CEO since 2011 and stayed on as an advisor (Game Developer, Twitch blog). Fortune still described Clancy as Twitch's chief executive in June 2026 (Fortune).
Name | Role | Period |
|---|---|---|
Emmett Shear | Co-founder and CEO | 2011 to March 16, 2023 (Game Developer) |
Dan Clancy | CEO (previously president) | March 16, 2023 to present (Twitch blog) |
Who owns Twitch
Amazon owns Twitch. On August 25, 2014, Amazon said it would buy all outstanding shares of Twitch Interactive for about $970 million in cash, adjusted for assumed options and other items, with Twitch's shareholders already approving the deal (Amazon release). Twitch's letter to users the same day said its office, employees and brand would stay largely the same and that it would keep its independence (Twitch blog). In June 2026 Clancy pushed back on the idea that Amazon would sell Twitch (Fortune).
Twitch funding history
Twitch raised a $20 million Series C in 2013, two years after its launch and a year before Amazon bought it. The table below covers that round and the Amazon purchase; Justin.tv's earlier rounds are left out.
Event | Date | Amount | Detail |
|---|---|---|---|
Series C | Announced September 30, 2013 | $20 million | Led by Thrive Capital, with WestSummit Capital and Take-Two Interactive; existing investors Alsop Louie Partners and Bessemer Venture Partners added more (Engadget) |
Acquired by Amazon | Announced August 25, 2014 | About $970 million in cash | Amazon cited Twitch's reach: in July 2014, more than 55 million unique visitors watched over 15 billion minutes from more than 1 million broadcasters (Amazon release) |
