What Instacart does

Instacart works with more than 2,200 retail banners across nearly 100,000 stores, according to its second-quarter 2026 release. Customers order through the Instacart app or website and a shopper picks and delivers the order; the company's about page cites about 600,000 shoppers. It operates in the United States and Canada, where it expanded in 2017. Its business has four main parts:

  • Instacart Marketplace. The consumer app and website, plus Instacart+, a paid membership with $0 delivery fees on orders over a set size (Form 10-K).
  • Enterprise technology for retailers. Storefront, which the 10-K says powers more than 380 grocers' own e-commerce sites, and in-store tools such as Caper Carts, which the company is now winding down, and FoodStorm. Costco became the first Storefront Pro customer outside North America, in France and Spain, per the Q4 2025 letter.
  • Instacart Ads. Advertising for consumer brands, with over 9,000 active brands at the end of 2025 (Form 10-K).
  • AI shopping tools. An AI assistant in pilot that helps customers build baskets, and an integration with Google Gemini through AI Mode in Google Search, both listed in the Q2 2026 release.

A few retailers carry much of the business: the 10-K says the top three accounted for about 43% of gross transaction value (GTV), the total value of orders placed, in 2025.
