How to Snooze Emails in Apple Mail on Mac: Remind Me (2026)

Apple Mail calls snooze Remind Me. Set one on your Mac in two clicks, pick a custom time, change or clear it, and fix reminders that are grayed out.

To snooze an email in Apple Mail on your Mac, Control-click the message (or swipe right with two fingers) and choose Remind Me. Pick Remind Me in 1 Hour, Remind Me Tonight (9:00 p.m.), Remind Me Tomorrow (8:00 a.m.) or Remind Me Later for a date and time you set. At that moment Mail notifies you and moves the email back to the top of your inbox, per Apple's Mail guide for macOS 27.

Snoozing is for the email you can't answer yet but can't afford to forget: the quote you'll accept once the budget is signed off, the invite you'll reply to after you check with your partner. Apple's guides never call it snooze, so the feature is easy to miss. This guide covers setting a reminder, choosing your own time, finding and clearing reminders, the Remind Me option that's grayed out, and how Remind Me differs from Follow Up, flags and Send Later.

How to snooze an email in Apple Mail on Mac

Apple Mail's snooze is the Remind Me command, which arrived with macOS Ventura 13 (MacMost) and is meant for messages in your inbox. The steps below are the ones Apple lists for Mail on macOS 27.

  1. In Mail, click the email you want to come back to.
  2. Control-click the message in the list. Or swipe right on it with two fingers on your trackpad or Magic Mouse.
  3. Choose Remind Me.
  4. Pick a time: Remind Me in 1 Hour, Remind Me Tonight, Remind Me Tomorrow or Remind Me Later.
  5. For Remind Me Later, set the date and time, then confirm.

The menu bar route works too: with the message selected, open the Message menu and choose Remind Me, as an Apple Community Specialist points out in this thread. Apple's list of Mail keyboard shortcuts has no shortcut for Remind Me, so it's always a click or a swipe unless you add one yourself; the Apple Mail keyboard shortcuts post explains how to give a menu command your own keys in System Settings.

When each Remind Me option fires

One hour from now

Remind Me Tonight

9:00 p.m. local time

Remind Me Tomorrow

Times come from Apple's Remind Me instructions. "Local time" means your Mac's time zone, which matters if you snooze something in one city and open your laptop in another.

How to snooze an email until a specific date

To snooze an email in Apple Mail until a particular day, choose Remind Me Later and set the exact date and time. The three presets only cover the next day, so anything further out, such as next Monday or the week a contract renews, needs Remind Me Later.

I lean on Remind Me Later more than the presets. When a supplier sent a renewal quote weeks before it was due, there was nothing to decide yet, so I snoozed it to the Tuesday morning before the deadline and closed the thread. It came back the week I actually needed it, with the numbers in front of me, instead of sitting in my inbox making me anxious for a month.

Tomorrow means 8 a.m.

Remind Me Tomorrow always lands at 8:00 a.m. If your first hour goes to a stand-up or the school run, the email arrives while you can't act on it. Use Remind Me Later and pick the time you actually sit down to email, such as 10:00 a.m.

Where do snoozed emails go in Apple Mail?

Snoozed emails in Apple Mail are listed in the Remind Me mailbox in the sidebar until their time comes. When the reminder fires, you get a notification and the email jumps to the head of your inbox, according to Apple.

If you don't see Remind Me in the sidebar, it may be tucked under Favorites. MacMost, a long-running Mac tutorial site, shows pending reminders listed there and notes that a message leaves that list once its reminder fires (MacMost). That's worth knowing: miss the notification and the only trace is the email sitting at the top of your inbox.

Can you archive a snoozed email?

Apple's guides don't say what happens to a reminder if you archive or move the email. MacMost reported in 2025 that a reminder still fired after the message was archived (MacMost). Earlier Apple Community replies said moving a message out of the inbox removed its reminder (Apple Community). Behavior may differ between macOS versions and account types, so before you build a habit on it, set a reminder a few minutes out, archive the email and see whether it comes back on your Mac.

How to change or cancel a reminder in Apple Mail

To cancel a reminder on a Mac, Control-click the email, open the Remind Me submenu and choose Clear Reminder. Apple's Mac guide doesn't describe this step; it comes from users in an Apple Community thread, who found it more reliable than the Remove Reminder option on the banner Mail shows on an email whose reminder has fired.

  1. Open the Remind Me mailbox in the sidebar, or find the email in your inbox.
  2. Control-click the email.
  3. Choose Remind Me, then Clear Reminder.
  4. To move a reminder to another time, clear it, then set a new one with Remind Me Later.

In that same thread, people on macOS Sonoma 14.4 reported reminders reappearing after they removed them from the banner, even after restarting Mail and the Mac. One person found the change took a few hours to show after Clear Reminder, so give it time before you clear it a second time.

For an iCloud Mail address, iCloud.com's own guide offers a cleaner route: select the email, open the More menu, choose Edit Reminder, then change the date or time or remove the reminder.

Make sure the reminder actually reaches you

A Remind Me reminder is only useful if its notification gets through. Mail notifications are controlled in System Settings > Notifications > Mail, and during a Focus they show only if you've allowed Mail, per Apple.

  1. Open System Settings and click Notifications in the sidebar.
  2. Under Application Notifications, click Mail.
  3. Make sure Allow Notifications is on, and choose a style that stays on screen if you tend to miss banners.
  4. If you use a Focus for deep work, add Mail to its allowed apps.

The first reminder I relied on arrived in the middle of a long Focus session for writing. The banner never showed, and I only found the email at the top of my inbox that evening, after the window to act on it had closed. Now Mail is on my work Focus's allowed list, and I keep the snoozed emails that really matter to times when I'm not heads-down.

Why is Remind Me grayed out in Apple Mail?

Remind Me is usually grayed out because the email isn't in your inbox. In an Apple Community thread that began on macOS Ventura 13.0, people found the options worked on inbox messages but not on mail in other mailboxes or folders filled by rules.

  • Move it to the Inbox first. Drag the email onto Inbox in the sidebar, then try Remind Me again.
  • Try a Smart Mailbox. One workaround in that thread was a Smart Mailbox with the condition "Message is in mailbox" set to the folder in question, then setting the reminder from there. Others said it only worked sometimes.
  • Check your macOS version. Remind Me arrived with macOS Ventura 13 (MacMost). Choose Apple menu > About This Mac to see which version you run.
  • Check the account. The same thread asked whether the problem was limited to some email providers, so test a message in a different account to narrow it down.

Remind Me vs. Follow Up, flags and Send Later

Remind Me brings back an email you received, on the schedule you set. Apple Mail has three neighbors that people mix up with it, and each solves a different problem.

Four ways to come back to an email in Mail

Feature

What it does

Where to find it

Remind Me

Returns an email you received to your inbox, first in line, at a set time

Control-click > Remind Me

Follow Up Suggestions

Raises an email you sent to the head of your inbox if no reply arrives within three days

Mail > Settings > General > Follow Up Suggestions

Flags

Marks an email until you clear it; flagged mail collects in the Flagged mailbox

Flag button in the toolbar

Send Later

Schedules an email you wrote to go out at a set time

Send Later button when composing; Send Later mailbox

Sources: Apple's pages on marking emails to revisit later (Follow Up and flags) and sending email (Send Later). Follow Up can be ignored per message by swiping left on it in the list, the same page says.

My own split is simple. Remind Me for anything I owe a reply to on a specific day. A flag for the handful of threads I'm working through this week. Send Later when I've finished a reply at 11 p.m. and would rather it land in the client's inbox at 8:30 a.m. And I leave Follow Up on, because the emails I most often forget to chase are my own. If you use several flags, renaming flag colors makes it obvious which one means "this week".

How to snooze an email on iPhone and iPad

Remind Me works in Mail on iPhone and iPad too. Open the email, tap Reply, scroll the options and tap Remind Me, then pick a preset or Remind Me Later, as MacRumors describes.

To see or clear snoozed emails on iPhone, open the Remind Me mailbox from the Mailboxes list. If it isn't there, tap Edit in the Mailboxes list to turn it on, according to the accepted answer in an Apple Community thread. iCloud Mail on the web has Remind Me as well, under the More menu (Apple).

Snoozing Gmail in Apple Mail

Remind Me works on Gmail accounts in Apple Mail (people use it on Gmail in this Apple Community thread), but it's Apple's feature, not Gmail's Snooze. Gmail's own Snooze, set in Gmail itself, removes the email from your Gmail inbox until the time you pick and keeps it under Snoozed (Google's help).

Google's page doesn't say anything about Apple Mail, so the safest assumption is that the two don't know about each other. If you snooze a Gmail message in Gmail, look under Snoozed in Gmail when it vanishes from your Mac. If you snooze it with Remind Me, expect only Apple Mail to bring it back. Pick one tool per account and stick to it. If you'd rather have Gmail's real snooze in a Mac app, our Apple Mail vs. Mimestream comparison covers a Gmail-only client that has it.

A snooze habit that doesn't become a second inbox

Snoozing only helps when the email comes back at a moment you can act on it. A few rules keep the Remind Me mailbox from turning into a pile you avoid.

  • Snooze to the time you'll act, not the time you'll remember. A reminder at 9:00 p.m. on a Friday just snoozes the guilt.
  • Snooze each email once. If it comes back and you snooze it again, decide: reply, delegate, or archive it.
  • Glance at the Remind Me mailbox on Monday morning, so nothing big is due without warning.
  • Keep Mail notifications on and allowed in your Focus modes.
  • Use Remind Me Later for anything tied to a date someone else set: a deadline, a renewal, an event.

Wait for the reply, not the clock

Remind Me only knows times. Sometimes the thing you're waiting on is someone else's answer. Merlin, the Mac assistant, reads the Gmail account you connect to it (not your other Mail accounts), so you can ask it in chat: "when the landlord replies, tell me what they said" or "at 4, check whether the caterer confirmed". It checks at that moment and tells you in a quick note what it found. If that moment falls in a meeting or overnight, it waits until after, unless you picked that exact time.
