How to Record a Google Meet in 2026: Every Option, Step by Step
Need a recording of a Google Meet call? Here's how to record on a computer or Android, where the file goes, and what to do if your account can't record.
To record a Google Meet, join the meeting on a computer, click Meeting tools, then Recording, then Start recording, and confirm with Start. The video saves to the organizer's Google Drive. It only works on eligible paid Google plans, and an admin may have to allow it. Free Gmail accounts can't use Meet's recorder.
That last part is where most people get stuck. You're about to start an interview or a client call, you look for the record button, and it isn't there. This guide covers Meet's own recorder on a computer and Android, where the file ends up, how to record every meeting automatically, what to do when your account can't record, and the one thing you should always say before you press the button.
Which way to record a Google Meet should you use?
Use Meet's built-in recorder if your Google plan includes it, because everyone is notified and the file lands in Drive with no extra software. If you only need the words, a transcript or AI notes is lighter. If your plan has no recorder at all, a screen recorder on your computer is the fallback.
Option | What you get | Needs | Where it saves |
|---|---|---|---|
Meet's recorder (computer) | Video, audio, presentation, optional captions and chat | Eligible paid plan, recording allowed | Organizer's Google Drive |
Meet's recorder (Android app) | Same recording, started from the phone | Same as above | Organizer's Google Drive |
Meet transcript | Text of what was said | Eligible Workspace edition | Organizer's Google Drive |
Take notes for me | AI summary, decisions and action items in a Doc | Eligible Workspace edition or Google AI plan | Organizer's Google Drive |
Screen recorder (Mac or Windows) | Whatever your screen shows, sound depending on settings | Nothing extra | Your computer |
Can you record a Google Meet? Who's allowed
You can record a Google Meet if your account is on an eligible plan, recording is turned on for you, and you're the host or someone the host's settings allow. A free personal Gmail account can't record with Meet's own tool.
Plans that include recording
Google's recording help page lists these Workspace editions: Business Standard, Business Plus, Enterprise Starter, Enterprise Standard, Enterprise Plus, Essentials and Enterprise Essentials, plus some Education licenses. Business Starter is the one that catches people out: Google's edition comparison shows no recording on it.
For personal Google accounts, recording comes with Google One plans that have 2 TB of storage or more, and with Workspace Individual. Google's premium features page also lists recording for Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers.
Who can press the button
On an eligible plan, the recording help page says these people can record:
- The host of the meeting.
- Co-hosts, including someone from outside the organization whom the host promoted.
- People in the host's organization, when the host has Host management turned off.
- Teachers and co-teachers for meetings created from Google Classroom.
Two catches. If the host can't record, nobody else in the meeting can either. And someone who joins only to present can't record; they need to join the meeting first, then present.
Say Darnell is a recruiter at a 300-person staffing firm in Dallas, and a hiring manager at a client company sends him the Meet link for a panel interview. Darnell's company pays for Business Plus, but the meeting belongs to the client. Whether he can record depends on the client's plan and settings, not his. The simplest fix is to ask the client to record and share it.
How to record a Google Meet on a computer
On a computer, you start a recording from Meeting tools at the bottom right of the meeting window. These are the steps from Google's recording help page:
- Open the meeting in your browser and click Join, or Start for a new meeting.
- At the bottom right, click Meeting tools.
- Click Recording.
- Optional: pick a language if you want captions recorded too.
- Click Start recording.
- In the pop-up, click Start, then wait for the notice that recording has started.
Everyone in the meeting is told when a recording starts and stops, including people on phones. If your admin requires consent, each person sees a prompt and can click Start, Join or Continue, or Leave.
How to stop recording
Click Meeting tools, then Recording, then Stop recording, and confirm with Stop recording in the pop-up. If you forget, the recording stops on its own when everyone leaves, or after 8 hours, which is the maximum length of one recording.
What the recording includes, and what it leaves out
A Meet recording captures the active speaker and anything presented. According to the recording help page:
- Captions are included if you chose a language when you started.
- Chat is saved as a separate .SBV file, but only when continuous meeting chat is off.
- Other windows and your notifications aren't recorded, so a Slack pop-up on your screen won't end up in the file.
- Pinning someone on your screen doesn't change who appears in the recording.
- Shared screens record at up to 1080p, unless your admin has lowered it.
How to record a Google Meet on Android
On Android, you record from the Meet app's Tools menu. The steps on Google's Android help page are:
- Open the Meet app and tap Start or Join.
- At the bottom right, tap More, then Tools, then Record.
- Optional: choose Include captions, Also start transcribing or Also start Take Notes with Gemini.
- Tap Start, then Start again in the pop-up.
- To stop, open Tools, tap Record, then tap Stop.
The same plan rules apply, and the file still goes to the organizer's Drive.
Can you record a Google Meet on iPhone?
No. Google's recording help page says you can only record a meeting on a computer or an Android device. On an iPhone or iPad you're told when someone else records, but you can't start or stop it.
The iPhone's own screen recorder exists, and Apple's screen recording guide explains how to turn it on from Control Center. Apple also says some apps might not allow you to record their audio or video. I wouldn't trust it with a meeting that matters. If you're on an iPhone and need a recording, ask the host to record, or join from a computer.
Where do Google Meet recordings go?
Google Meet recordings save to the organizer's Google Drive, in a folder called Google Meet, with a sub-folder for each meeting. The organizer and the person who started the recording both get an email with a link, per Google's recording help page.
- It's the organizer's Drive, not yours. If you recorded someone else's meeting, look in your email for the link rather than in your own Drive.
- The old folder moved. From July 2026, Google moved the older Meet Recordings folder inside Google Meet and renamed it Legacy Meet Recordings. Old links still work.
- The calendar event gets the link if the recording started at the scheduled time, and people in the organizer's organization get access automatically.
- "Still processing" means the file isn't ready to watch yet. Give it a while and check again.
How to download or share a recording
In Drive, select the file, click More, then Download. Google recommends downloading for the best playback. To share, select the file and click Share, or copy the link into an email.
Here's a before-and-after on that email. Say Colleen manages a six-person support team at a software company in Denver, and she recorded Tuesday's training on the new refund policy for two people who were out.
Hi both, here's the recording from Tuesday. Let me know if you have questions.Subject: Refund policy training (recording, 42 min)
Hi Wes and Jill,
Here's Tuesday's training: [link]. The part you need is at 12:30, where we walk through refunds over $500. Please watch that section by Friday and try the two practice tickets in the queue. Questions go in our team channel so everyone sees the answers.
Thanks,
ColleenThe second version tells them how long it is, which part matters and what to do next. Most people won't watch a 42-minute recording from the start, so point them to the minute that counts.
How to record every Google Meet automatically
A host can set a meeting to record itself: when creating the event, click Video call options, then Meeting records, and select Record the meeting. Google's recording help page says everyone sees a warning on screen, and recording doesn't begin until the host or a co-host joins on the web.
Admins can go further. On Business Plus, Enterprise Standard, Enterprise Plus, Education Plus and Enterprise Essentials editions, Google's admin guide explains how to turn on automatic recordings and transcripts for an organization. Hosts can still change it for their own meetings, and the setting only applies to meetings created after it's turned on, so older recurring events won't pick it up.
Recreate the recurring meeting
If your weekly team meeting was set up before auto-recording was turned on, it won't record itself. Create a fresh series with Record the meeting selected under Meeting records, and delete the old one once the new series is on everyone's calendar.
How to get a transcript or notes instead of a video
If you only need what was said, a transcript or AI notes is often more useful than an hour of video. Both are separate from recording in Google Meet, so you can use either one on its own.
Turn on a transcript
Google's transcripts help page gives these steps on a computer: click Meeting tools, then Transcribe, then Start transcription, and click Start in the pop-up. The transcript is saved in the organizer's Drive, in the same Google Meet folder, and the host gets an email with a link.
- Transcripts are available on Business Standard, Business Plus, Enterprise Starter, Enterprise Standard, Enterprise Plus, Workspace Individual and some Education editions.
- They work in English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese and Spanish.
- They can't be paused. Stopping and starting again creates a second file.
- They capture spoken words only. To keep the chat, record the meeting.
Use Take notes for me
Take notes for me writes a summary with decisions and action items into a Google Doc. On a computer, click Take notes for me at the top right of the meeting, then Start taking notes, per Google's notes help page. It needs an eligible Workspace edition or a Google AI plan, works best for meetings between 15 minutes and 8 hours, and handles one language per meeting.
If you're comparing Google's built-in notes with dedicated note takers, my AI note-taking tools guide goes through the options and their free plans.
How to record a Google Meet without the record button
If your account can't use Meet's recorder, the free option is the screen recorder already on your computer. It records what your screen shows, but Meet won't notify anyone, so you have to tell people yourself.
On a Mac
Apple's screenshot and screen recording guide gives these steps:
- Press Shift-Command-5.
- Choose Record Entire Screen, Record Selected Portion or record a window.
- Click Options and pick a microphone under Microphone.
- Click Record.
- When the meeting ends, click the Stop Recording button in the menu bar. The file saves as a .mov.
Apple's guide only describes a microphone option, so don't assume it captures the other people's voices cleanly, especially if you wear headphones. Do a one-minute test call first and play it back.
On Windows
Microsoft's Snipping Tool guide gives these steps on Windows 11: open Snipping Tool, select the Record button, then New, select the area of the screen to record, and select Start. Select Stop when you're done, then save it. The shortcut Windows logo key + Shift + R starts a recording too.
Microsoft's page doesn't cover sound settings, so the same advice applies: run a short test and check that you can hear both sides before you rely on it.
Say Doug is an independent bookkeeper in Tucson who uses a free Gmail account and wants to keep a record of a 30-minute call where a client walks him through their expenses. Meet's recorder isn't an option for him. A screen recording works, as long as he asks first and checks the sound beforehand.
Is it legal to record a Google Meet?
It depends on where everyone is, so the safe habit is to tell people and get their agreement before you record. Federal law in the US requires the consent of at least one person in the conversation, but the Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press recording guide says about 11 states, including California, Florida, Illinois, Pennsylvania and Washington, primarily require everyone's consent.
When people join from different states, the same guide says courts disagree on which state's law applies, and advises assuming the stricter one does. A meeting with people in several countries adds their rules on top. This isn't legal advice; if recordings are part of your business, ask a lawyer about your situation.
Meet's own recorder at least tells everyone on screen. A screen recorder or a separate app doesn't, which makes saying it out loud more important. My rule: say it at the start, get a yes from each person, and keep that moment in the recording.
Before we start, I'd like to record this call so I can focus on the conversation instead of taking notes. I'll only use it for my notes and won't share it beyond the people who need it. Is everyone OK with that? Why can't I record my Google Meet?
If the Recording option is missing or grayed out, it's almost always the plan, an admin setting or your role in the meeting. Here's how to work through it:
What you see | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
No Recording option at all | Free Gmail account or Business Starter | Upgrade, ask the host to record, or use a transcript or screen recorder |
No Recording option on a paid plan | Your admin hasn't allowed recording | Ask your admin to turn it on (below) |
Recording option missing in someone else's meeting | You're not the host, or Host management is on | Ask the host to record or make you a co-host |
Can't find it on your phone | You're on an iPhone or iPad | Join from a computer or Android device |
Recording won't start or fails | Your Drive or your organization's storage is full | Free up space, or ask your admin about storage |
Can't find the file | It's in the organizer's Drive, or still processing | Check the email link or the calendar event |
For admins: turn on recording
If you're the Google Workspace admin, Google's Meet settings guide puts recording here:
- In the Google Admin console, go to Apps, then Google Workspace, then Google Meet.
- Click Meet video settings.
- Optional: pick an organizational unit or group if only some people should record.
- Open Recording and check the box that lets people record their meetings.
- Click Save. Changes can take up to 24 hours, but usually happen sooner.
Say Heather runs IT for an 80-person accounting firm in Columbus on Business Standard, and partners keep asking why they can't record client calls. If recording is switched off in Meet video settings, turning it on fixes it for the whole firm, and she can limit it to the partners' organizational unit if the firm wants that.
Before you record your next Google Meet
A short checklist I'd run before any meeting worth recording:
- Check that your plan includes recording, and that you're the host or co-host.
- Join on a computer or Android device, not an iPhone.
- Make sure the organizer's Drive has space.
- Tell everyone at the start and get a clear yes.
- Decide who gets the recording, and send it with a line on which part matters.
- Delete recordings you no longer need, especially ones with client or candidate details.
If you only need the words, the free transcription software guide covers tools that turn a recording into text.
Record the audio of any call on your Mac
Merlin is a Mac app that can record the audio of your calls, including Google Meet. About a minute before a Google Calendar meeting with other people, it offers Join & record, or you can press Start recording yourself. Recording is free; paid plans add transcripts with speaker labels and notes. It records audio only, not video. Meet doesn't show its recording notice for it, so tell people first, as with any recorder.
Get MerlinFrequently asked questions
Can I record a Google Meet with a free account?
Not with Meet's own recorder. Free Gmail accounts don't include recording, so you'd need an eligible paid plan, the host to record, or a screen recorder on your computer with everyone's agreement.
Does Google Meet notify others when you record?
Yes. When you record with Meet's recorder, everyone in the meeting is told when recording starts and stops. A screen recorder or separate app doesn't trigger that notice.
Where do Google Meet recordings go?
They go to the meeting organizer's Google Drive, in the Google Meet folder, with a sub-folder for each meeting. The organizer and the person who started the recording also get an email with the link.
Why is there no record button in Google Meet?
Usually your plan doesn't include recording (free Gmail and Business Starter don't), your admin has turned it off, you're not the host, or you're on an iPhone.
How long can a Google Meet recording be?
Up to 8 hours. After that, the recording stops on its own, and it also stops when everyone leaves the meeting.
Can I record a Google Meet on my phone?
On Android, yes: tap More, then Tools, then Record in the Meet app. On iPhone and iPad, Google says recording isn't available.
