Canary Mail vs. Apple Mail in 2026: Which Is Better on Mac?
Canary Mail or Apple Mail on your Mac? Compare 2026 prices, AI, read receipts, PGP encryption, privacy and Windows support, then pick the one you need.
For most Mac owners, Apple Mail wins: it's free, built into macOS, and on an M1 or later Mac it adds AI summaries, Smart Reply and Priority Messages at no cost. Canary Mail is better if you want read receipts, PGP encryption, snooze and templates, or one mail app across a Mac, a Windows PC and an Android phone.
I went looking at Canary because of a pricing proposal I'd sent a client: I wanted to know whether they had opened it before I chased them, and Apple Mail simply can't tell you that. This guide compares Canary Mail and Apple Mail on what actually separates them in 2026: price, AI, read receipts, privacy and encryption, everyday inbox tools, the calendar, and which devices each one runs on. Every detail comes from Apple's and Canary's own pages.
Canary Mail vs. Apple Mail at a glance
Canary Mail is a third-party email app for Mac, iPhone, iPad, Windows and Android with a free plan and two yearly plans. Apple Mail is the mail app that ships with macOS, iOS and iPadOS. The table below lines them up as of October 2026.

Is Canary Mail free? Pricing compared
Apple Mail costs nothing and has no paid tier. Canary Mail has a free-forever plan and two paid plans billed yearly, listed on Canary's pricing page:
- Free: $0 for up to 2 devices, with unlimited mail accounts, a unified inbox, Read Receipts (Lite), Snooze and Pin, email templates and Inbox Zero tools.
- Growth: $36 a year (shown as $3 a month) for up to 5 devices. It adds AI Copilot, full read receipts, Send Later, calendar and scheduling, the Inbox Cleaner and app integrations.
- Pro+: $100 a year (shown as $10 a month) for up to 5 devices. It adds PGP encryption, SecureSend encryption for HIPAA work, phishing and ransomware protection, impersonation detection, misdirection prevention and priority support.
Two billing details are easy to miss. Canary doesn't sell monthly subscriptions, so the monthly figures are the yearly price divided by 12, according to the pricing page's FAQ. Growth and Pro+ are also sold as one-time lifetime purchases inside the app; the website doesn't list those prices, so check the in-app store before you decide. Every paid feature can be tried for 7 days with no credit card, and the account drops back to Free when the trial ends.
The fair way to read this: Canary's free plan already beats Apple Mail on snooze, templates and a light version of read receipts. The features most people switch for, AI writing, full receipts and Send Later, sit in Growth. Encryption only arrives with Pro+.
AI in Canary Mail vs. Apple Mail
Apple Mail's AI is free but needs an Apple silicon Mac; Canary's AI runs on any Mac that runs Canary, and its writing and summary tools need a paid plan. So the better AI depends mostly on which Mac is on your desk.
Apple Intelligence in Apple Mail
On a supported Mac, unread messages in the inbox get an AI preview in place of their first lines, any open message or thread can be condensed with the Summarize button, and clicking Reply brings up Smart Reply drafts to choose from, per Apple's Mail guide for reading and replying. Priority Messages pins time-sensitive email to the top of the inbox; turn it on with View > Show Priority Messages, as Apple's guide to Apple Intelligence in Mail explains. In macOS 27, Apple's What's new in Mail page adds Personalized Writing, suggested actions based on a conversation, and search that matches the meaning of your query, not just the words.
The catch is hardware. Apple's requirements page lists a Mac with M1 or later (or the A18 Pro MacBook Neo) running macOS 27, a supported language, and up to 14 GB of free storage, depending on the Mac. An Intel Mac gets none of these features. If you'd rather not see AI previews, choose Mail > Settings > Viewing and deselect Summarize Message Previews.
Canary's AI Copilot
Canary's AI page lists AI Copilot drafts that suggest a full reply, tone changes (professional, casual or concise), subject lines, thread summaries in bullet points, and natural-language search such as "show me invoices from last month." Categorization and the priority view run on your device. Drafting, summaries and search send content to the cloud; for search, Canary says the index stays on your device and only the query and a limited set of results go out.
If you own an M1 or newer Mac and mainly want summaries and quick replies, Apple's AI covers it for free. Canary earns its Growth price when you're on an Intel Mac, when you also want the same AI on a Windows PC or Android phone, or when asking your inbox questions in plain English matters to you.
Read receipts: the feature Apple Mail doesn't have
Canary Mail has read receipts and Apple Mail does not. Canary's free plan includes Read Receipts (Lite) and Growth includes the full version, per the pricing page. Apple's Mail guide for macOS 27 doesn't describe any read receipt option, and Canary's own page points out the same gap.
Canary's read receipts page says a receipt fires when the recipient opens the email and their mail client loads images. They're on by default, work with Gmail, Outlook, iCloud, Exchange and IMAP accounts, and can be switched off in Canary's Settings under Composing.
Know the limit before you rely on them. If the recipient reads your email in Apple Mail and has turned on Protect Mail Activity, Apple's privacy guide says Mail downloads remote content in the background when messages arrive. Since Canary's receipts depend on images loading, a receipt from that person tells you the email arrived, not that someone read it. If they block images, you may get nothing. On that proposal, a receipt would have told me less than I hoped; the client's reply to a short nudge told me more.
For more on what does and doesn't work, see read receipts in Apple Mail.
Privacy and encryption
Both apps block email trackers, Apple Mail supports S/MIME, and Canary adds PGP and password-protected SecureSend on its Pro+ plan. The bigger difference is where your mail goes: Apple Mail talks to your email provider, while Canary keeps mail on your device but sends AI requests to outside AI providers.
Apple Mail
- Protect Mail Activity: choose Mail > Settings > Privacy and select Protect Mail Activity to hide your IP address and load remote content privately, per Apple's privacy guide.
- Hide My Email: with iCloud+, choose Hide My Email from the From pop-up menu to send from a random address that forwards to you. Messages sent this way can go to only one recipient.
- S/MIME: signing needs your own certificate in Keychain, and encrypting needs each recipient's certificate. When both are present, a checkmark (signed) and a closed lock (encrypted) appear in the message header.
Canary Mail
- Tracker blocking runs on every account, and Canary's security page doesn't list it as a paid feature.
- PGP is OpenPGP compatible, so recipients don't need Canary. It's a Pro+ feature.
- SecureSend sends a secure link with identity checks, an expiry date, the option to revoke it and an optional password, for people who don't use PGP. Also Pro+.
- Phishing and impersonation protection flags spoofed senders and fake links before you click, on Pro+.
On data handling, Canary's privacy policy says your credentials and email content are stored on your device and never shared with third parties. Its servers briefly hold the sender, subject and first line of a message to deliver push notifications. Personal models for things like prioritization are trained and stored on your device, while writing, summarizing, replies and chat use hosted models from outside AI providers, which Canary says won't use your data to train their models.
When I send an offer letter or a contract with salary figures, I want the content locked, not just the connection. S/MIME does that in Apple Mail only if the other person has a certificate, and most of the people I send contracts to don't. A SecureSend link with a password works with anyone, and that's the one Canary feature I'd pay Pro+ for. If your company requires approved mail apps, check with IT before adding a work account to Canary.
Everyday tools: snooze, templates, Send Later and follow-ups
Canary gives you more inbox tools for free; Apple Mail gives you scheduling and follow-up reminders for free. Which matters more depends on how you work through email.
What Apple Mail includes
- Send Later: the Send Later button offers a few ready-made times plus a custom date and time. Scheduled messages sit in their own mailbox in the sidebar until they go, per Apple's sending guide.
- Undo Send: click Undo Send at the bottom of the sidebar within 10 seconds, or change the delay in Mail > Settings > Composing.
- Follow Up suggestions: a sent message with no reply after 3 days moves to the top of the inbox. Turn it on or off in Mail > Settings > General, per Apple's guide to revisiting emails.
- Flags and VIPs: rename flags (Red to "Urgent," say) and mark up to 100 senders as VIPs.
- Smart Mailboxes and rules: choose Mailbox > New Smart Mailbox to collect mail that matches your conditions, per Apple's sorting guide.
Follow Up suggestions are the quiet strength here. They put my unanswered email to a venue about event dates back in front of me after I'd stopped thinking about it, without my setting anything up.
What Canary Mail includes
Canary's free plan has a unified inbox for unlimited accounts, Snooze and Pin, email templates you can share with a team, and Inbox Zero tools. Growth adds Send Later, the Inbox Cleaner for bulk tidying and app integrations, per the pricing page.
Templates are the one I'd point to. Apple Mail has no templates feature, and the Apple Mail template workarounds take more clicks than a reply you send every week deserves. If you answer the same three questions every day, Canary's free plan solves that alone.
Calendar and platforms: Mac only vs. everywhere
Apple Mail runs only on Apple devices; Canary Mail runs on Mac, iPhone, iPad, Windows and Android. If any device you use isn't made by Apple, that settles it for Canary.
Canary's downloads page lists the Mac App Store (macOS 12 or later), the iOS App Store (iOS 15 or later), Google Play (Android 8 or later), the Microsoft Store (Windows 10 or later) and a Chrome extension that only does read receipts. The free plan covers 2 devices and the paid plans 5.
The calendar is uneven across those platforms. Canary's calendar page says it's fully supported on macOS, iPhone and iPad with Gmail, Outlook, iCloud, IMAP and Exchange accounts, works with Gmail only on Windows, and isn't available on Android yet. Copilot Schedule suggests meeting times in replies based on your working hours. Apple Mail has no calendar inside it; you use the separate Calendar app on your Mac.
How to try Canary Mail on your Mac without leaving Apple Mail
You can run Canary next to Apple Mail for a week without moving any email, since both read the same messages from your provider. The steps:
- Open the App Store on your Mac, search for Canary Mail and install it (macOS 12 or later).
- Add the same accounts you use in Apple Mail. Your messages stay on your provider's server, so nothing moves out of Mail.
- Start the 7-day trial only when you're ready to judge AI Copilot, Send Later and full read receipts, so the trial covers a normal working week.
- Turn off notifications in whichever app you're not testing that day, or you'll get two alerts for every message.
- If Canary wins, make it the default: in Apple Mail's menu bar go to Mail > Settings > General, then pick Canary from Default email reader, as Apple's support article describes. Mail links in other apps then open in Canary.
If you keep Apple Mail, two keyboard shortcuts carry over to almost any Mac mail habit: Shift-Command-D sends the message you're writing and Control-Command-A archives the selected email, per Apple's shortcuts list.
Which should you choose: Canary Mail or Apple Mail?
Pick by the problem in front of you rather than the length of the feature list.
If this is you | Choose | Why |
|---|---|---|
You use only Apple devices and an M1 or later Mac | Apple Mail | Free AI, Send Later and follow-ups |
You also use Windows or Android | Canary Mail | Same app on every platform |
You want to know when emails are opened | Canary Growth | Full read receipts (with limits) |
You send contracts or health data | Canary Pro+ | PGP and password-protected SecureSend |
You're on an Intel Mac and want AI | Canary Growth | Apple Intelligence needs M1 or later |
You reuse the same replies every day | Canary Free | Templates, snooze and pin at no cost |
You want no outside AI providers near your mail | Apple Mail | Its AI comes from Apple, not outside providers |
If neither fits, these Apple Mail alternatives cover Spark, Outlook, Mimestream and more. If most of your mail is in Gmail, read how Gmail and Apple Mail compare.
Help with the replies themselves
Changing mail apps changes the inbox; it doesn't write the email. Merlin, a Mac assistant, sits alongside Apple Mail or Canary: press ⌥Space and it opens over whichever one is in front. With your Gmail account connected, you can ask it to find the thread where a client agreed the scope, or to draft a polite nudge about a proposal that's gone quiet. If you then tell Merlin to send it, you get the full draft on screen first, can change any line, and the email only leaves once you've said yes. Its email features work with Google accounts, so iCloud and Outlook inboxes aren't covered.
Draft the follow-up without switching apps
Press ⌥Space over Apple Mail or Canary, have Merlin pull up the Gmail thread and write the nudge, and send it once you've signed off.

Is Canary Mail better than Apple Mail?
Canary Mail is better if you need read receipts, PGP encryption, templates or a mail app on Windows and Android. Apple Mail is better if you use only Apple devices, have an M1 or later Mac for free AI, and don't want to pay.
Is Canary Mail free?
Yes. Canary's free plan covers up to 2 devices with unlimited accounts, snooze, pin, templates and Read Receipts (Lite). AI Copilot and Send Later need Growth at $36 a year, and PGP needs Pro+ at $100 a year.
Does Apple Mail have read receipts on Mac?
No. Apple Mail on Mac has no read receipt setting. Apps like Canary Mail add them, but they depend on images loading, so they're unreliable when the recipient uses Apple's Protect Mail Activity.
Is Canary Mail safe to use?
Canary says your credentials and email content are stored on your device and not shared with third parties. Its AI writing and summary features use hosted models from outside providers, which Canary says don't train on your data.
Does Canary Mail work with iCloud and Outlook?
Yes. Canary works with iCloud, Gmail, Outlook, Exchange, Yahoo and other IMAP accounts, all in one unified inbox.
Does Apple Mail have AI on an Intel Mac?
No. Apple Intelligence in Mail, including summaries, Smart Reply and Priority Messages, needs a Mac with M1 or later (or the MacBook Neo) and a supported language.
