Mesh Alternatives in 2026: Personal CRMs for Each Reason to Switch

The short answer

Mesh suits people who want every contact from email, calendar, LinkedIn, WhatsApp and iMessage gathered and kept current with little effort, on almost any device. For LinkedIn sync with meeting briefs, look at Dex. For open source or self-hosting, Monica. For a shared team pipeline, folk. For a Mac assistant that also replies and follows up from Gmail, Merlin.

We make Merlin, one of the tools on this page. Every claim about other tools is checked against their own sites.

The Merlin teamReviewed by Adeola Adeoti10 min read

The best Mesh alternative depends on why you're leaving. Dex is the closest match in spirit, with LinkedIn sync and keep-in-touch reminders. Monica is open source and can run on your own server. folk is built for teams that share contacts and send outreach. Merlin, which runs on a Mac, reads your Gmail and calendar, shows who is waiting on you, and drafts the replies.

Mesh is the personal CRM that used to be called Clay. If you searched for an alternative, you may be watching the free plan's contact limit, wondering what the rename means, or wanting a tool that does more than remind you. This page covers what Mesh does well, the reasons people look around, four alternatives with who each one fits, and a side-by-side table built from each company's own pages.

What Mesh does well

Mesh is a personal CRM that builds your contact list for you. Its homepage describes pulling in everyone you've met, keeping their details current and surfacing job changes, with a feed of birthdays, news, reconnect prompts and reminders. Its integrations catalog lists Gmail, Google Calendar, Microsoft Outlook, iMessage, WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter/X, phone calls, Notion, Zapier, Make and others. The homepage names LinkedIn too, and Mesh's browser extension shows your notes and past interactions on the LinkedIn profiles you visit.

A few things set it apart:

  • It runs nearly everywhere. The homepage lists macOS, Windows, web, Android and iOS apps.
  • The free plan is generous. Mesh Personal is free for up to 1,000 contacts and includes imports from email, calendar, social and messaging sources, groups, and reconnect, reminder and birthday alerts, per the pricing page.
  • An AI assistant for your network. Nexus, an optional add-on, drafts emails, suggests gifts and summarizes a contact before a meeting, according to its help page. The Nexus 4.0 post from January 2026 adds editing contacts, managing groups, finding duplicates and web search for news about people, plus an MCP connection for outside AI assistants.
  • Security paperwork for companies. The pricing FAQ says Mesh is SOC 2 Type 2 certified and can provide a HIPAA BAA.

If you want a contact book that fills itself from many sources and works on your phone and a Windows PC alike, Mesh is hard to beat, and the free plan may be all you need.

Why people look for a Mesh alternative

There are a handful of good reasons to look around, and each one points to a different tool.

The contact limit and the price

Past 1,000 contacts, Mesh Pro costs $10 a month for unlimited contacts, with an annual option on the same pricing page. Mesh also asks for a credit card when you sign up: new members start on a 14-day Pro trial and can switch to the free plan in Settings before it ends, and the FAQ says the card requirement is there to keep out spam and bots.

The rename caused confusion

Mesh announced the change from Clay on March 26, 2026, saying the name had become crowded. Clay.com is a separate company that sells sales data enrichment, so searches for "Clay alternatives" often turn up lead-generation tools that have nothing to do with a personal CRM. If that's how you got here, the alternatives below are personal and small-team relationship tools.

Privacy and control

Mesh's security and privacy page says it doesn't sell your data or use it for advertising, and that data is encrypted in transit and at rest. It also says data may be stored and processed outside your country, deleted data can stay in backups for up to 90 days, and Nexus requests go to a third-party AI provider's servers. People who want their contact records on hardware they control tend to look at self-hosted options.

A team that needs shared deals

Mesh for Teams covers shared networks and warm introductions, and the Team plan is $40 per seat a month for up to four team members. A team that wants deal stages, email campaigns and sequences on top of shared contacts usually needs a different kind of tool.

Wanting help with the follow-up itself

A personal CRM tells you who to contact. Some people want the next step handled too: the reply drafted, the promise tracked, the meeting prepared.

The Mesh alternatives, one by one

Dex: the closest match

Dex calls itself a personal CRM "built for people, not sales pipelines" on its homepage. It gathers contacts from email, calendar, messaging apps and LinkedIn into one timeline, sets keep-in-touch reminders, sends updates when connections change roles and prepares briefs before meetings. It runs on the web, iOS, Android, macOS, Windows and as a Chrome extension, and offers an MCP server and a REST API.

Dex has no free plan. The pricing page lists Premium at $12 a user each month if you pay for the year ($20 if you pay monthly) with LinkedIn sync for up to 2,500 connections, and Professional at $20 a month billed annually ($34 monthly) with up to 9,000 connections, Outlook, multiple email accounts, API and Zapier access. Both come with a 6-day trial that needs a card.

Pick Dex if you like how Mesh works but want deeper LinkedIn sync and research briefings, and don't mind paying from day one.

Monica: open source and self-hostable

Monica describes itself as "the open-source personal CRM" on its homepage. It's the one to choose when you want to type things in yourself rather than have them imported: reminders, notes, journal entries, activities like meals and trips, family and work relationships, important dates and custom fields. It imports contacts from vCard and CSV files. Its privacy promise is direct: your data is never sold, never used for advertising and never used to train a model.

The pricing page lists hosted Monica at $90 a year or $9 a month with unlimited contacts and a 30-day trial that needs no card. Self-hosting is $0 from Monica; you pay for your own server and handle updates and backups.

Pick Monica if privacy or ownership is the reason you're leaving, and you'd rather keep careful notes than sync every account.

folk: for teams that share contacts

folk is a CRM for small teams that work from relationships. The pricing page lists Standard at $24 per member a month billed annually ($30 monthly), with email, calendar and WhatsApp sync, a LinkedIn extension, contact enrichment and email campaigns. Premium, at $48 a month billed annually ($60 monthly), adds email sequences, deals and dashboards. Every workspace starts with a two-week trial that needs no card.

Pick folk if you've outgrown a personal tool and your team needs one shared list with deal stages and outreach.

Merlin: a Mac assistant that follows up

Merlin is a Mac app built around your Gmail, Google Calendar and Google Contacts. Its People panel lists who is waiting on your reply (a person who wrote to you directly 2 to 30 days ago and hasn't heard back), birthdays in the next 14 days, reminders that are due, and people who have gone quiet after regular emails stopped two months ago. Opening someone shows a short summary of where things stand, a timeline of emails, meetings, recorded calls and chats, and your notes, reminders, to-dos and the moments you add, such as a dinner that never showed up in your inbox.

The difference from a personal CRM is what happens next. You can tell Merlin in chat who someone is to you, how you met or what their dog is called, and it files that on their record. Ask it for a message to someone and you get a draft to edit and approve; nothing is sent until you do. It can also record calls on your Mac, keep meeting notes and prepare you before a meeting.

Merlin is narrower than Mesh in ways that matter. It's Mac only, with no phone or Windows app. It reads Google accounts (two on Free, five on paid plans), not Outlook, and it doesn't pull contacts from LinkedIn, WhatsApp or iMessage. There's no way to delete a person from People yet, no custom fields, and no shared team network. Its pricing starts with a free plan with 5,000 monthly credits, which the assistant spends as it works; Pro is $29 a month or $278 a year.

Pick Merlin if your relationships mostly live in Gmail and Google Calendar, you work on a Mac, and the follow-up is where things slip.

How to choose a Mesh alternative

Start from what made you search, then match it to the tool built for that problem.

  • You're over 1,000 contacts and only need the basics: compare Mesh Pro at $10 a month with Monica's hosted plan at $9 a month. Staying on Mesh may be the simplest answer.
  • LinkedIn is where your network lives: Dex, whose plans are sized by the number of LinkedIn connections they sync.
  • You want your data on your own server: self-hosted Monica.
  • Your team shares contacts and runs outreach: folk, or Mesh's own Team plan if you only need shared networks and introductions.
  • You use a phone or Windows PC daily: Mesh or Dex, both of which have apps for those. Merlin won't fit.
  • Gmail is your relationship record and replies are what slip: Merlin, on a Mac.

You can run two

A personal CRM and an email assistant don't compete for the same job. If Mesh's free plan covers your contacts, you can keep it as your contact book and add an assistant for the inbox side.

Switching from Mesh: what to know first

Before you cancel, check what you'd lose and how to take your records with you. Mesh's cancel and delete help page covers the steps:

  1. Ask for your data first. The help page doesn't describe an export, and points you to care@me.sh for help with account data. Ask before you delete anything.
  2. Cancel from Settings. On desktop or web it's App Menu → Settings → Profile → Cancel Plan. Your plan stays active until the next billing date; there's no mid-cycle cancellation.
  3. App Store subscribers cancel with Apple. If you subscribed on iPhone, turn off renewal in your Apple ID's Subscriptions settings.
  4. Delete only when you're sure. Settings → General → Delete Account removes notes, contacts and integrations, and Mesh says it can't be undone.
  5. Import into the new tool. Monica takes vCard and CSV files, and Dex lists contact import on every plan. Merlin builds its list from your Google contacts and mail, so there's nothing to import.

See who is waiting on you

Merlin's People panel reads your Gmail and Google contacts and shows who wrote to you and hasn't heard back, who has gone quiet and whose birthday is coming. Open anyone to see your history together, then ask for a draft and approve it before it goes. Merlin runs on a Mac and has a free plan.

Frequently asked questions

Is Mesh the same as Clay?

Yes. The personal CRM formerly called Clay was renamed Mesh, announced on March 26, 2026, with the same team. It's unrelated to Clay.com, a separate sales data enrichment company.

Is Mesh free?

Mesh Personal is free for up to 1,000 contacts. Unlimited contacts need Mesh Pro at $10 a month, and Mesh asks for a credit card at signup because new members start on a 14-day Pro trial.

Is there a free alternative to Mesh?

Self-hosted Monica costs nothing from Monica, though you pay for and maintain your own server. Merlin also has a free plan, but it runs only on a Mac with Google accounts.

Does Dex have a free plan?

No. Dex starts at $12 a user each month when paid yearly, or $20 paid month to month, with a 6-day trial that needs a card.

Can I export my contacts from Mesh?

Mesh's cancellation help page doesn't describe an export option and asks you to email care@me.sh for help with account data. Do that before deleting your account, since deletion is permanent.
